Okay now I have heard it all - Geewhiz

Doctor just dictated speena beef-eda.  What do you know, supposed to be spina bifida.  I just don't get paid enough to translate this stuff.  Never know what's coming next.

Same here - SAM

I have an ESL whom I've learned to giggle at but the first time I did one of his reports, I could not for the life of me figure out what in the world a sunrise view of the KIDNEY could be and how in the world the patient could feel his KIDNEY giving way.

After listening through the report a couple of times, I realized this particular dictator pronounces "knee" as "kah-nee." Once I figured out that little oddity, I actually did LOL. And it fully explained how he could feel if his "kah-nee" was giving way and how they managed to get a sunrise view of his "kah-nee."

Some of these pronunciations crack me up.

I cannot believe - disturbed

that these jerks presumably communicate with other medical professionals and NO ONE corrects their mispronunciations!? Or are they too godlike (or oblivious) to be corrected? Many of our Chinese doctors said "diabetics" for "diabetes." You know they talk to their patients like that. Maybe even the better-educated patients still had no idea what the Chinese doctor was saying, so had no idea what to start correcting! As for me, I could tell when my BP and my anger were rising as I slogged thru transcribing yet another ESL messer-upper. I wonder if any other countries import in doctors that do not speak the local language as heartily as the United States does?

That doesn't seem at all unusual to me. You must be a new MT.

these samples here are both close enough to not be unusual at all. - sm

I've had American born ladies and gents dictate far, far worse chopping words after vowels.

Also - keep in mind the ESLs THINK in their native language constantly. Wouldn't you, say you lived in France or Spain?
Some sounds are difficult for them to produce physically, too. Ever try to fuse that Spanish RRRRRRRRR into a word and keep going with the full sentence?

Besides, this is America. No one is going to 'make' them learn to enunciate properly until is causes an error that costs the insurcance companies plenty! lol. Why it isn't picked up naturally over time - now there's a dilema.

if that really troubles you, you need to get out of MT - sorry

[ In Reply To ..]
I can hardly regard that as a reasonable complaint. Regional variations among native English speakers can be even more challenging than your example. If you were stumped by this pronunciation, your problems are greater than simply having an ESL dictator.

Why do some of you insist on ruining - lighthearted posts

[ In Reply To ..]
by injecting your pompous negativity? The OP was simply telling a story that some of us might get a kick out of. There was abolutely no reason for you to be insulting. Are you so miserable that you feel the need to bring everyone down to your level? You are a sad, bitter person and seem to have far more "problems" than the OP does.

Thank you - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I just got a chuckle out of it, thought others might too, since we have all been there. Oh well, that's the board nowadays, can't even share something without being attacked.

I guess I missed the lighthearted part - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't let me ruin it for you. Just forget about my opinion if you don't like it. But please - don't accuse me of ruining the post. It's pretty darned pompous to suggest that someone saying "speena befeeda" requires some kind of translation. lol
There was nothing pompous in what the - OP said.
[ In Reply To ..]
You, however, may want to develop a sense of humor and/or have that stick up your rear removed.

There was no reason for you to post at all, let alone post an unprovoked insult to the OP. It was as lighthearted a post as you can get on this toxic site. Some of you just cannot help yourselves. You will find any reason to lash out at someone else to make your pathetic self feel better.

oh, there it is. Cannot get through a day without on juicey - name call...NM

The accent is just so thick and the pronunciation of some words takes a minute to decipher. But I agree with someone else who said the far worst dictators are American doctors/PA/nurses who are simply too careless and lazy to properly enunciate. My best dictator is an ESL who is so careful with his pronunciation and he will spell out things if he is unsure. He always takes his time and he never fails to tell the "operator" thank you and to have a lovely day.

Always amazes me that the best dictators are - the only ones who say "thank you"

[ In Reply To ..]
I feel like thanking them! Do you think if we gave out "best dictator" awards it would help? lol

My new "bad dictator" is Irish... very fast and softpoken/slurred, can't understand half of it. :p

I had one say warsh instead of wash. I wish these eng as 1st language spoke - perfect English too.nm

warsh - Old hoosier

[ In Reply To ..]
Hey, girl, that's the way I was taught too, being originally from southern Indiana, and even though I grew up in southern California,to this day I can't get rid of that "r."

Exactly my point! :-) Accents are regional, whether here - or abroad

[ In Reply To ..]
and it just goes with the MT territory. No one speaks perfect English.

There's a difference between accents because of region or English not being the first language, and being oblivious without excuse as a health professional to know how to pronounce a medical term (melanotic comes to mind).

My whole in-law side of the family (most of whom are now deceased) hailed from S. Illinois, so when I hear warsh, it makes me smile.

Probably the only thing I really enjoy about this profession is the constant exposure to different dialects and accents, so it bugs me a little when accents are belittled or made fun of.

Anyhow... hope I didn't offend :-)

That's regional, like Boston vs Baahston vs Boeston - not even gonna start on NY. NM

[ In Reply To ..]
not to mention subject to begin with was about ESLs.

warsh is a perfectly spoken southern English word... - brokeMT

[ In Reply To ..]
being from the south, these are the ONLY pronunciation errors I can forgive! I know perfect grammar but get me around my relatives and all bets are off! what I find appalling is the account I work on which is a very large one with over 10 hospitals in one "account" has now put in their specs to NOT CHANGE the tense of a verb UNLESS it affects the MEDICAL meaning. it was hard at first, then I remembered my really large paycheck lol and now I'm giving them exactly what they asked for. All those ESLs who don't know the right verb to use are looking stupid on paper and I'm just following the rules. you really do "get what you pay for"

Okay, am I insane?  The MD is starting a SOAP note of someone having a physical exam to make sure she is safe before receiving sedation for an MRI.  The first sentence is: Patient is here for a pre-NSTA physical.    pre-NSTA???...has anyone heard of that before...done lots of research, but of course, the most hits I get are for the National Science Teachers Association...and I KNOW that is not it...ugh!  Little help please! ...

I have tested a few times before on mttest.com, a site that several MT companies use for testing potential MT's, and recently received this piece of information: In sections that require you to type in the correct answer, typing a "Capital" letter in the first letter of your answer constitutes a wrong answer. I don't know if this is accross the board but thought it good info to share. Maybe everyone already knew this, and I can't even remember if I did that on previous tests but i ...

Dec 03, 2009

I just heard that the 2 largest MTSOs in the world are approaching virtually every large to medium-sized hospital and medical center in the country with an offer for 10 cpl for transcription.  I'm not even sure who the 2 largest are, but I'm pretty sure one of them is CBay and both are offshore companies to be able to offer that rate.  This is really concerning because this could lower the rates for U.S. MTs even MORE or could literally put all U.S. companies out of ...
