News cast coming about what's happening to medical transcription - sm

Posted: Dec 31, 2013

This is exciting, you guys!  Our local NPR station (where I work full time) is planning to air an hour-long radio cast about the effects of the electronic medical records implementation on our MT careers.  I was telling our producer that I worked for 27 years as a full-time MT, both in the clinic/hospital setting and at home, but 5 years ago I could no longer make it financially as a full-time MT.  That's when I went to work in the public sector doing something unrelated to transcription.  I continue part-time as an MT, but barely making anything at it these days.

This is OUR chance to get the word out to the public about the devastation that EMR has caused to the MT industry.  Maybe it won't make a bit of difference, as there is probably no going back to the days before EMR, but we can at least be heard.

If you're interested in adding your "2 cents' worth" to the story, use the "send email" button on this thread and email me with your story.  I'll then put all the stories together and forward them to the producer.  No names will be mentioned, of course.  I'll simply copy just your statement and nothing else.

Let's do this!  Let's be loud and clear!  Yell

Awesome! When will it be aired? - I love NPR nm

sounds to me like it has not even been started to be put together - into a broadcast, just a gathering sm

of ideas, stories. If so, will take months to get it togeter and plan air time. Or - she needs the emails to present to produces to really get that ball rolling.

Frankly, with no information given other than an email link...I highly doubt this is for real, and so highly not interested.

Those of you with such a sour attitude about contributing - need not do so. Why fuss about it SM

[ In Reply To ..]
if you dont want to contribute?

How do you think stories or shows even start, without ideas and content submitted? It has to start somewhere, with ideas, and then information.

My question to YOU... why are you so defensive? - MT

It is posters' right to guard their privacy re. their salary, working conditions, etc. This poster has a valid point in not giving out such information in that it may very well be a ploy to find out identities of posters, thereby jeopardizing their jobs/livelihoods.

The MTSOs have other advantages, the greatest of which is just being able to screw over their MTs financially, all the while thumbing their noses at the DOL.

At the same time, they need to create & keep good will and public opinion in order to hire & retain employees. They don't like MTs coming on this board with negative info. Of course, they want to know their identities: If an employee, he/she is terminated.

BE CAREFUL, FELLOW MTs... - NPC

[ In Reply To ..]
...This may be a ploy to find out the identity of complainers. If the NPR producer wants more information, he or she should put out the request, not the anonymous author of this post. I have a mouthful to say about this profession, but will hold back until I know exactly who will get my information.

Nothing to worry about. - OP

I'm the original poster. I work full time at our local PBS/NPR affiliate, Illinois Public Media/WILL radio and TV station, and part-time as an MT at home.

I can see your point and understand your concern. The "Focus" program producer is gathering info to run a story on how the implementation of VR and EMR has negatively impacted the careers of all of us in the MT field. However, she has decided to only use stories from those of us locally in the central Illinois area. The website is will.illinois.edu. When I know an exact air date, I will post it on this board. You can then listen online on the web with live-streaming or later in the day on podcast. Even though the producer won't be able to interview anyone who isn't local, you all will at least be able to listen and know that we MTs ARE being represented in our effort to tell of the "downside" of VR and EMR. Also, you'll be able to call in to the program and tell YOUR story at that time, if you wish.

I doubt it's a ploy. But even if it is, we have - little to lose; a year from now, MT will be

[ In Reply To ..]
dead and gone. The writing was very clearly on the all all during 2013, and 2014 is the year it's going to happen.

Getting the word out should be done, not because it's going to save MT, but maybe it'll start the wheels turning towards saving other professions that could disappear, as well.

and if the real producer did put the request out, - you would still complain SM

[ In Reply To ..]
that it was a fake post of someone scamming information and MT identities.

Some of you are never happy with any little thing done to try to call attention to the MT situation or any attempt to improve it. You obviously like wallowing in your own misery.

If you've got such valuable information why dont you contact producers or other media on your own. That way you can be sure who's getting your information and keep your precious identity a secret.

Who's "wallowing in their own misery...just read your own post! - Happy MT

[ In Reply To ..]
You come across as a most miserable miscontents on these boards.

And who are YOU to suggest the poster doesn't have a right to state his/her OWN opinion & experiences ... just as you are doing here?

kidding right? and how much is being paid to use my life for their - ratings? nancydrew

[ In Reply To ..]
ever notice how every holiday comes some attempt at heroism to save save MT?

I doubt NPR is going for ratings. If you want to be paid, - write a book or contact the big networks. nm

Oy vey... Debbie Downer strikes again. It's - folks like you who let MTSOs do this to MTs.

yes, I am the reason MTing is in a state of collapse. - really.

tsk, tsk...and its such a cross to bear in this life...according to you.

I have no fear of sharing my info - office girl

[ In Reply To ..]
I honestly think a story on medical transcription is not going to boost ratings, who really cares?? At least someone is addressing the real issue without all the sugar coating.

What station and when, if you know that? Nm - All ears

Original poster here with an addendum - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The station's name is WILL. The website is: will.illinois.edu.

I just got back from my morning break and talked with Lindsey, our producer. She told me that since we're a local PBS affiliate, she can only use stories from the the local MTs who lost their jobs at our 2 clinics and 2 hospitals when the transcription depts. closed. All of our local clinics and hospitals, by the way, went to Nuance. Some of the MTs went ahead to Nuance, but most decided (like me) to start a new career doing something non-MT-related. I'm one of the few who has continued to be a part-time MT while working at a full time job that has nothing to do with medical transcription.

So, unfortunately, Lindsey won't be able to use any stories from MTs who don't live in central Illinois. However, when I know the date and time of the broadcast, I'll post here. You can listen online with live streaming or you can listen later in the day on our podcast.

Thanks, everyone, for your interest in getting our stories out there. Maybe it'll motivate all of us, no matter where we live, to contact our local news stations and suggest they do a similar story.

SHE IS LOOKING FOR ILLINOIS MTs - office girl

[ In Reply To ..]
This is an Illinois NPR station and she asked that Illinois transcriptionists who are interested contact her. I'm sure she'd love to hear from others as well, but specifically Illinois folks. NPR rocks.

I sent a story - wheres_my_job

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not in Illinois though, but close. :)

Error Rate Stats (sm) - Rose

[ In Reply To ..]
Please relay to the producer that if she does a Google search on "Voice Recognition Errors" she will find pages of studies that have been done listing statistics of their studies. For example Mt. Sinai Hospital analyzed 615 reports created with VR and found that 23% of them contained major errors using Nuance ASR software. Sorry I can't post the links as it's against rules on this board. Patients need to know what is happening with their medical records and how risky it is that their providers are using ASR. This 23% of errors are only the errors that can affect patent care, it doesn't include errors in grammar, etc.

I sent the info to the producer - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
I just now sent your post to the producer here at Illinois Public Media/WILL. I copied and pasted your paragraph and not anything else. Thank you!

The interview is tentatively scheduled for 1/10 - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
If the local MTs in central Illinois are willing to be interviewed, then the producer is looking at Fri., 1/10, as the air date. It will be live and take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. CENTRAL time. You can listen to live-streaming online at: will.illinois.edu, scroll down to "Focus" and click on the link, then go to "listen." I'm finding out that the local MTs are leery about being interviewed because they think it will hurt their chances of getting another MT job. I disagree and am doing my best to encourage them to talk. I'm not allowed to be interviewed because I work at the station.

Thanks, OP! (nm) - Rose

Do You Thing There Is A Turnabout Happening In Transcription
Jul 19, 2013

Just curious if anyone is starting to see a trickle of companies taking back their transcription from the MTSO? I am starting to see some places who once outsourced bring it back in house. No hospitals, unfortunately, but the smaller to medium medical groups, afraid of the liability of having their medical records roaming all over India. I know of an HR person at a large group of clinics here who told me they are bringing it all back in house because of liability and HIPPA issues. They pay $20.0 ...
