MT pay going lower and lower. - PAMT

I think it is very easy to see that with MT pay going lower and lower like 2.5 cpl that there will be very few MTs that stay in this business and who would even want to study to become an MT. This country has lost so many jobs overseas that I have no idea what the future will hold for many people to even try to find work. Unbelievable to think that we can survive in an American economy on wages that are paid overseas which is exactly what is happening. It is impossible to do. We have topped out our debt level in this country and nothing is getting cheaper except what we earn. I dont see there is anything coming that can change all this to try to compete in this world economy.

MT work is just the tip of the iceberg. I have taken so many cuts in pay but at least I have a job unlike many others who were in other lines of work. It is kind of sad that as prices go up our MT pay goes down. The MT companies grow richer while we grow poorer.

[ In Reply To ..]Where in the world is 2.5 cpl? I think 7 cpl is bad enough. I pay MTs 9 cpl because I have been a sub myself and tough to made decent pay at 8 cpl, but I do see 7 and 8 cpl offered routinely, unless you are talking about editing. I cannot tell you how hard it is to find good people, speed, accuracy and work ethic, overstating their qualifications, trouble with easy dictators. People are very opinionated about the MTSO (derogatorily) but until you have tried hiring (screening the dozens of resumes we receive) and training and keeping people, you are comparing apples to oranges. I think people keep thinking the grass is greener but it is not.
I personally think the change is not so much cpl, but rather the technology, typing with so many different platforms, lot of keystrokes we are NOT paid for, compared to old days of tapes and straight typing. I have posted here before that I made more money at 8 and 9 cpl for straight typing, than 10-14 cpl all this EMR technology, dictating only small reports for every section of the report, in and out of the EMR, looking into patient charts for things.
I have never been without work in 20 years. The jobs are still there for good, conscientious MTs, but the hourly rate is down with all the changes in platforms is my observation. I still have 3 docs on tapes, at 10 cpl and can make $40/hour on their straight typing 20, 30, 40 pages a tape, but making less per hour for higher cpl on EMR stuff.

Hi all, There is a discrepancy with the proper use of this - can anyone help? Some at my work are saying it should be bilateral lower extremities, whereas others think it is bilateral lower extremity since the "bilateral" implies that it's plural and hence no need to say "lower extremities." Well I started with a new company this week and so far I have made $31 for the whole week. I have never done Radiology before and that was what they put me on. I am acute care but the hospital I used to work for had their own Radiology Dept, so th is is a new learning curve, plus new doctors, format, etc. By the time QA gets ahold of reports I feel ike a new student and I have over 35 years exp. What's going on with TTS? When I first worked for them a few years ago they offered a little more than I was making at a national. I was told they did this to kept quality MTs. Now the story is different and I was told they need to lower line rates because of competition. They also lost a manager after years with TTS. I am doing VR on a hospital account that I just started doing in August - the amount of time that I spend researching doesn't change to "half" when I am doing VR from straight. I don't know the names of the all the doctors, hospitals, clinics, cities, streets, etc. in this account - if the VR puts in Dr. Stevens - I have to double-check to make sure that it doesn't mean Dr. Stephens.
