MT's, what's your take on the BLS earnings info? - lmh

Hi all. I've been an MT for 3 years working from home and I fall into the lowest 10% of wage earners category on the BLS website. I'd like to know if I am just an unfortunate person or if this is the common experience for MTs and the BLS is just wrong. I'd love to know what category the rest of you guys fall into and how long you've been an MT and of course if you all work from home too. Thanks!

I make an average of $34/hour on a high ESL teaching account. (Retiring in 62 days!) If you have only been working for three years, you should not be discouraged. Each year should show an increase in production (and money) for you. I think the BLS is on the low side. Be patient with yourself. You will get faster!

work for so I can take your position after you retire? I am high LPH but every account I have worked on runs out of work before I can make significant money.I have been in this biz since 2000.

I am sorry, I cannot. My boss has specifically asked me not to post the company name on here, as the last time I did that, they were swamped with so many applications from newbies that it caused problems--HR staff was not big enough to handle all the apps. All I can say is keep on trying. Gradually the right place will come up.

If it is the same BLS info I have looked at, their data are from May 2008. Back then, the majority of my work was straight typing with an acceptable pay rate, my company's platform was less bulky and time consuming, and probably just my imagination, but the audio quality seemed to be better (hence fewer stops and relistens). I really wish cell phones and speaker phones would be banned for dictations. Since 2008, my ability to produce/earn has gone from quite comfortable to working hard to reach that lowest 10% earnings. And, yes, before anyone suggests it, I am working on getting out of this business.

OP: To answer some of your questions, I have been an MT for 25 years and have worked from home for about 15. You only have 3 years invested. If you plan on continuing to be an MT, just be diligent in finding ways to use your expander to do as much work for you as possible. With time and more knowledge, your production should increase. I believe there are still opportunities to make good money, as Old Pro has, but I personally have not had any luck with that--maybe you will. Good luck to you!

Think I'm getting really paranoid now. In checking my production over the last 4 days, I noted that I earned the same amount within a dollar each day for 8 hours work, despite having differention dictators and work type combinations over those 4 days. Just seems very odd to me. Two days, most work was from account. Other days, mixture of several accounts. Usually, I would vary a bit from day to day. Anyone noticing the same? ...

It isn't easy to get off some of the spam and phone call lists when you click for more information about some of these courses. My current CCM is one of the best of the many I've had. I had previously worked with her on this account from1999 until we were sold to MQ in 2005; she is my 6th or 7th CCM here at MedQuist. So what is there to know about OSI before I make a life-changing decision? Minimum line count for FT? Approximate cpl for a "very experienced" MT, for straight typing; cpl for VR?
