Job ending... - lost

Posted: Sep 04, 2012

I work for a major medical center that is in the transition phase of pearl/cerner with the program that allows the physicians to pick from templates and pen based/touch screen to do their own reports as they are seeing the patient, which is phasing out transcription all together. We may have 30 days, may have a few more months, they cannot say for sure. The only thing they can say with certainty is that they will no longer need us and we need to be making plans for a career change in the form of going to school and learning something new or seeking new employment. Some ladies have been here 40 years, some 20, etc....scary starting over. I have been reading these boards about low pay etc and i am terrified! How in the world am i going to keep my home. I wont be able to afford to live on 7 cpl. Sorry do long. The worry and stress is keeping me up at night. I just dont know what to do. :(

I feel for you - sm

See if there is another position at this Major Medical Center you work for. See if there is something in the admitting, nurses desk, CEO secretary, etc. Also see if there is something in Medical Records such as EMR entering. I know it is scary, this has happened to many of us. I wish I saw the writing on the wall many years ago and changed my career sooner than getting the let go speech. I wish you the best and I will be thinking of you.

We have all been watching the job boards and so far there is nothing open with the exception of nursing and housekeeping. Both are external hires only. Even the file room ladies are being let go with the exception of a couple for records requests. I am not going to wait until the last second to find a new job, but it is looking like i will need 2-3 jobs just to make the income i am pulling now. I am so afraid of the uncertain future. I am new here and reading about running out of work, low pay and no pay scares me to death. This is the first time in almost 20 years i will be working from home like this..if i can find a job. I am clueless as to where to even start looking. I dont know MDI, MQ, etc...from ABC. It's all Greek to me.

any advice welcome - lost

Since I am new to seeking employment here or from home for that matter, any advice about what companies hire employees, not IC would be great. What companies to honestly stay away from and what a good pay would be. I am used to making 17 an hour with incentive so pure cpl is totally different for me. I have 18 years acute care. Is the average pay between 7 and 10 cpl? Thanks ahead of time for your help.
The average pay is 4 to 6 cpl - speech recognition took over

You may get an offer of 7 to 10 for straight, but chances are you will be editing 90% or more of your work at a rate of 4 to 6 cpl, and probably 4 cpl to start. It is going to be SUPER HARD to make 17 an hour. I barely can make 12 an hour and I have worked for the same company for 16 years and make 6 for speech recognition. I would find anything else to do...

I lost my good MT job a little more than four years ago. I have not found one that I am satisfied with since. I just lost one I had for three months before it went to EMR. I may be somewhat lucky in that I can collect social security. If you are that age, I would suggest you at least look into that and also unemployment and after that I would get out of MT for good. I want out of it so bad I can taste it now. I have been burned too!! Good luck and kind of look into things you have wanted to do in life but were not able to. You will go through a change in your life and be a different person after all this, I have. Don't give up.

It is happening so much. I would say 8 cpl is about the best offered these days. I can't find a company that keeps me in steady work. Going back to school now to prepare for when it basically dries up for good, working when jobs are there in the meantime. Double-edged sword though, I have time to do homework when work runs out.

It is a good idea to look for another position at your facility.

If you are wanting to get into another profession, it may behoove you to seek out UE. Then trying to get a federal grant to go back to school. I didn't get a grant because I'm making too much money, not steady or enough to live anything but paycheck to paycheck, but that's how the numbers fell. I think people on UE have a better chance at getting help for tuition, books, etc.

I am sorry you find yourself in this situation. My thoughts are with you as the feeling of being "lost" is shared by me and I'm sure many reading your post. Best wishes.

Suggestion - Coder

My suggestion to you would be that you request placement in any job at the medical center. In the library, as a secretary or ward clerk, or something to tide you over until you can retrain.

A choice that many MTs find appealing is coding. You can, if you are highly motivated, train for that in reasonable time. A college will take 9 months after you have completed prerequisites. Andrews can be done in a year, less if you are highly motivated.

You might be able to luck out by getting the coding department to train you. Or, work in HIMS while you train. Do not limit your thinking to only hospital coding jobs.

If coding itself does not appeal to you, consider doing an RHIA program. If you have a college degree you can do it in about a year at the University of Toledo. Otherwise, I recomend the informatics program at Western Governors University. That can be completed in less time than at a traditional semester-based university. You can begin almost immediately, without waiting until next January, too.

If you are going to school, grants can pay for housing as well as tuition. There is also unemployment compensation to consider. Your hospital may prefer to keep you employed in some capacity to prevent your going on unemployment.

See if your hospital will pay for retraining in high demand occupations like nursing. Many will.

Be proactive about this. Start looking for another job and making plans tomorrow.

If you can get some help, now would be an excellent time to make a career transition. Find your community resources. Hubby was able to go back to school when laid off. With the financial help we had, we were only set back a year or so, did not lose the house, and now he has a great career. Maybe this can be a positive for you.

Good luck to you. My position was eliminated two months ago for the same reason. I have been unable to find employment and have never had one reply from the multiple jobs on this website for which I have applied. I do not believe the jobs on this website are legitimate, so be sure to expand your search elsewhere

Use unemployment benifits - sm

I think you get at least 60% of your income. Use these benefits if you have to while retraining or searching for a new position. In my area we have an Employment Resource Center where you can job search, find avenues for retraining and apply for unemployment. Good luck

Account Ending, Starting To Look Around
Feb 14, 2013

Well, another job bites the dust! After working for the same MTSO for 5 years, she just notified us that our job will be ending at the end of the month.  The hospital did not renew our contract and signed with M Modal instead.  The same exact thing happened to me after working for another MTSO for four years prior to this one.  All the little guys are getting swallowed up by the big nationals, it seems.   So, now I get to search for another job (sigh).  I've got 8+ ...
