I should have become a dental hygienist. - sm

Mine loves her job. We got to talking about careers since mine is taking a nosedive after all these years. She works 32 hours a week...full time in her profession... solid hours, no weekends, great pay and benefits. Makes me long for my youth so I could start over.

The only thing stopping you from - starting over

The only thing stopping you from starting over is your decision that you are too old.

I have started over three times, and I am moving into something new right now. I don't focus on my age, so no one else does, either.

To "start over," you do not need to stop everything and "go in n many cases. to a school" like people did 50 and even 15 years ago. Most of the time, you can do it gradually and online.

Dental hygienists and some other healthcare fields are an exception, because the work is hands-on, but you can still do the prerequisites online.

Don't assume that jobs and salaries are guaranteed in that field, either. Jobs are limited. The weeding out is done by schools, which don't accept anyone who doesn't fit their mold.

I will be 50 years old. Wouldn't any employer choose that 25 year old over me? That's what is holding me back from starting over.

I'm 50 now - SM

And thinking about starting over. I realize how hard it is to compete with 25-year-olds, but I have to do something until I retire. I'm learning Spanish so I can be bilingual, long-term would love to be an medical interpreter. I know that's a long way off, but I have to start somewhere. I just want a job that can't be done by a machine, something I can do until I retire. Maybe there will be other opportunities for translators, who knows, I just know I need to move on from MT.
Competing with 25-year-olds - Meh!

If you are concerned with competing with 25-year-olds, just stay away from jobs where it would be a problem. Believe in your good qualities, like stability and maturity, and improve your appearance if you need to.

The average age of coders is something like 46. The majority of people I work with are grandparents. Out of about a hundred, we have maybe 5 who are under 40. We don't see absenteeism in older employees. It is mostly in parents of toddlers and school-age kids, where it is unavoidable, and new moms.

I know it will sound terrible, but the worst, by far, is in the unmarried, under 30 crowd. They can have the worst work ethic imaginable, drug and alcohol use is rampant, their customer service flippant, and their memory and attention to detail nonexistent. They are snarky, superficial, mean-spirited, and totally focused on free time and socializing. It is all about what's in it for them. If they just show up, they expect a prize.

There is an age issue in some industries, but I think less so in healthcare. Stay away from jobs outside that where men in charge value young bodies and lose morals, or which are dominated by young entrepreneurial types.

I was thinking of going back for this - kris

not for some time, as my daughter will be startig college in a couple of year, but maybe after my youngest is out of high school. I figure I'll have a good 15 years of working left after that...

Aug 01, 2011

I posted about different career choices and a lot of people responded about nursing and radiology tech, but no one responded regarding dental assisting as an option.  I used to make 20-25 an hour doing MT.  Now I am down to 16 an hour and sitting around waiting for work, etc.  I am just looking for a comfortable job that pays about the same as I was making as an MT.  I have researched dental assisting and found that it is a good career.  Dentists are utilizing DA's ...

Does Anyone Happen To Have A Dental Word Book
Jul 30, 2014

I rarely get complete mouth extraction reports, and when I do they usually have the same instruments used in them, but I have a burr that I am not familiar with. It sounds like crivet or cribet. "Using a _____ burr and the Hall handpiece, all sharp edges of alveolar bone were then smoothed over, and..."   There is a hard K sound to it, definitely not just 'rivet' burr.  Google wants to give me search results for 'crickett" but it is definitely not that. If you have ...
