I need a new computer - sm

My computer is probably ten years old and has become VERY slow. I have cleaned it and defragged it (Not sure if that helped or not) but I desperately need a new one. I have a newer one here that I could use, but this one has ten years worth of expanders, tips, shortcuts, etc. How do you even transition over to a new computer, is it as hard as it sounds?

like Instant Text or similar? If so, you can save your program to a disk and load it on a new computer. If you are using the Autocorrect feature in Word, I am not sure you can move those over. That is the big plus of using a word expansion program. Maybe post this on the Tech Board and you might get a better answer.

Not sure how you cleaned out your computer, but just deleting files is not enough. Delete them and empty the wastebasket, or the files are still there. It can also cause trouble to have huge numbers of files that are not in directories or software that loads automatically and then remains unused in the background. That kind of stuff ccumulates over time, especially if you download toolbars, stuff like coupon printing software, add-ins, browser enhancements, and so forth. Some antivirus software sauses computers to work more slowly (Symantec is known for that). Software that wants to keep checking for updates and downloading them in the background can slow things down. Accumulations of cookies aren't exactly helpful, either.

That can be difficult to find and remove by hand. There is an excellent shareware product that is easy to use and inexpensive if you want to buy the full version. Google CC Cleaner by Pyriform Software. With that you can safely remove unnecessary software, clear out cookies, erasw caches, and other useful things. It will also finf and fix registry errors. Then you can defrag again.

Once you have done that, if your computer iss still slow, you may have a virus. That is why yoh need to be cautious when transferring files from your old machine to another. If your antivirus is out of date, download the updates. Consedr geting another one, like one of the free ones. Snan the files you are trying to transfr.

Hopefully you are running something newer than XP, like Vista or newer, 32 bit. If you are, do not use the antivirus programs, just use windows defender and make sure you do all the windows updates faithfully. Next do the disk cleanup regularly and also go into your downloaded programs and get rid of stuff you don't need or use. Those antivirus programs are full of junk that slow down your computer and actually give you viruses. They are the bane of any computer. Windows defender works very well but make sure you do all the updates. Good Luck. If you do decide to buy a new one, check with your employer and make sure the newer windows work with their platforms. Windows 7 may be okay but I think 8 is sort of androidish with apps.

I was just wondering how old some computers are that are having problems with 6.1 and if there are people with newer computers that handles it better. Tech support says the Dpcqscribe program will only work with a 32 bit 4 gig computer...Im trying to not have to use their virtual desktop since it is lagging my computer something fierce..So I went to Best Buy today and all they have is 64 bit Windows 7 models..but they did say I could load windows 7 professional on there for another 99 dollars and it will run as a 32 bit...has anyone tried this and had it work??...Ill call tech support in the morning before I invest..I need to get off this craz ...
