I just received an email from an MT from India... - Ms. A

who must have gotten my email address from a resume I posted on one of the job sites. In the email, this MT makes a business proposition. Stating he/she (not sure!) would search for IC MT jobs and forward them to me. I would then apply and take the test. The ultimate goal is that I would get the job and then pay him a percentage of the line rate to transcribe the work.

I was a little taken aback. In my 22+ years in this business, I have never received any kind of proposition like this. Has anyone else had this experience? Does anyone actually do this?

This smacks of trouble. Beware. Why would someone in India, where obviously our work is headed (among other foreign lands), need to contact American MTs for work? I would delete this email and not waste time replying back. Its obvious this is some kind of scam.

this is no different from some of the "staffing agencies" here in the US, except this one is in India. It probably IS a scam, but so are the staffing agencies here. Always be cautious.

I would assume they cannot pass the test and need you to be a front person to get the job. No reason to believe their transcription would be up to snuff. Sounds like a good way to ruin your name in transcription....plus dishonest.

I have gotten emails like that. They are from scammers. Delete them without responding.

even entertain the possibility of doing such a thing. I posted her because I was incredulous and wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen.

In any event, how is this email any different than what most of the MTSOs consider normal business practices? The MTSOs establish themselves as "American companies," contract with the hospitals, clinics, doctors, etc. and then offshore the work to third world countries.

It's not different at all. I could very well grow my own service using this sort of tactic....

A legitimate service actually deals with the client, provides support services and infrastructure, etc.

This guy, on the other hand, is the transcription equivalent of a pimp. He is skimming a finder's fee just for having found job advertisements for you. Not even jobs ... just ads. Kind of like paying a pimp for the right to stand on some street corner he thinks he owns.

He wants her to apply for and get the job and he will transcribe it instead of her. Basically makes Ms. A the pimp in a sense since the person in India would do all the work and she would just give him a portion of the money made. Did I get that right Ms. A?

I once worked for a small company that a large prestigious hospital account. Unbeknownst to the owner of the company, one of her employees was subbing her work to someone in India.

In some fashion reports leaked to the internet and the hospital found out. THANK GOODNESS as the owner had no idea this had been going on!!

The owner/company was sued for under $100,000 and had to implement many new security procedures as never before.

It was a total nightmare!!

RUN...RUN...RUN AWAY!! This smells of scam to me. In fact, I would print out all of the emails and send them to your State's Attorney General or at least call their office, they will have a person you can talk to about scams. Block this person from your email today. Sheesh, what will they think of next?

I got the email informing me that I am sending an average of too many blanks to the customer. I wondered if everyone has received their W2s by now? I left MModal several months ago when I realized staying for the benefits was not worth the stress and LOW pay, but have yet to receive my W2. I also did not receive my final PTO pay but it was less than 100 dollars so did not pursue it other than a few emails (and yes, I gave 2 weeks' notice and worked all of that).
