How do you know when its time to find a new MT position? - Jan

Posted: May 19, 2015

Can anybody tell me how they decided when it was time to start looking for a new MT position? I mean really, they all seem to be bad but how do you know that what you already have won't be the lesser of 2 evils? How do you know they won't treat you worse and you make even less pay with a different company? I guess its the old fear of the unknown. I am sick of my job but experience has taught me that it probably would be worse somewhere else. I haven't seen it go the other way yet. Any suggestions?

I worked for - Imedx...

and after about 2 weeks of no work and no answers and no hope I finally threw in the towel.

New MT Position - Been There

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked for M*Modal and absolutely hated it, beyond hated it, I cannot begin to describe how much. It took me 8 months to find another job, numerous horrible tests, etc. When I found that job (Proscript), I quit on the spot, never wanting to return again, so I didn't care about giving notice. The new job was absolutely the best ever (wait for it), for two months and in another two months it was horrible and one day I turned on my computer and was told I was fired! I found another job luckily working for a small service doing clinic notes and working as an IC (which I didn't want, but was desperate). It was okay, but nothing great and I kept looking. After a month of finally learning this new account, she said they decided to go with someone else! Great. I figured out later, she probably just took an overflow position until they got set up with something else. She did have a hospital though and asked if I wanted that. I immediately said yes. For two months I made a total of $88.00.

That was four years ago and I am still with the same company. It is a decent job, but nothing great. I am retired, so get SS and that helps. I realize now I should have gotten out of transcription 12 years ago. First with Edix, which went to Sperhis, which turned into a horrible job, then to M*M who took them over and that was even worse.

I don't know what to tell you, other than, it is a leap of faith and if I were in the position of looking for something else it would not be an MT job. Even with this one, it will be my last when it is over.

Good luck!

I want a fun mindless job - Jan

[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you for your response. I suppose I will just hang on to this one for the moment but I would rather just get out of this ridiculous field and go work for Trader Joe's or Costco. They both start at $11 an hour and it sounds like a fun, physical, mindless job but I don't drive so I am stuck. Husband said Uber would be too expensive to use every day and there is no bus service here. What a pain.

Oh my gosh, that is totally what I want to do too! - Fried brainz

[ In Reply To ..]
I want to put in my ear buds, crank some sweet tunes tunes, and stock shelves or just freaking push empty carts from the grocery store parking lots. I want to do the same jobs the actual druggie "burnouts" do. Screw pride. Pride has gotten me zilch in this so-called "career." :-D
My most fun job was... - getting paid to run
[ In Reply To ..]
My most fun job which by the way, paid more than this field 8 years ago, was when I literally got paid to run around a huge electronics warehouse pushing a shopping cart and throwing and I mean throwing, all sorts of electronics in it and being timed on how fast I brought the order to the shipping dept.! It was a lot of laughs and I was totally physically exhausted at the end of my shift so I got my exercise in for the day too! I might have to move back to AZ and get a job there again. They are always hiring cause its so physical people quit constantly.
My ideal job would be something - like
[ In Reply To ..]
security guard... if I'm gonna make minimum wage anyway, might as well get to sit and read books for 8 hours a day, get up every hour and walk around a building. That would be loverly!
I had a temp job like that once - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
I was working as a temp in a doctor's office as a receptionist. He was an ENT doc and saw very few patients. I spent more time reading novels than anything else. It was the most boring job I've ever had. If I'm gonna get paid, I at least want to do something interesting, talk with people or use my brain in some way. But to each their own.

Moving - on

[ In Reply To ..]
I have always felt ".. if I just can't take it any more," I find another job (as best one can in this day and age). I was looking at a site with transcription jobs, some in-house, just none where I live currently. Type into Google "at home medical transcription jobs" and some sites should come up; I note Monster has a bunch of posted jobs for MTs. You could review those.

when to move on? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
when they start sending more and more overflow to a MTSO service. When they start nitpicking your reports to death. When they drop your pay/benefits. When they don't respond to communications. Definitely when they don't pay on time. Those things are "writing on the wall" so to speak. Any yes's to two or more above and your days are probably numbered, so may as well beat 'em to the punch.

So in other words, - we all should have

[ In Reply To ..]
probably moved on about 15 years ago LOL!
In other words, - Yes!
[ In Reply To ..]
Sad, but true. For those of us hanging on by a thread, the end is near and whatever company you are working for now will probably be your last one, unless you want to bounce around with these horrible places like, M*Modal, Nuance, etc.

I am constantly beating myself up for being an MT, and then I realized at one time, this was a very good job and I loved it. Unfortunately we have been taken over by technology and even worse by greed and outsourcing.

Every once in a while I see an office MT position, so there may be some hope, but not much. I know the hospitals will never, ever take back inhouse transcription again; I feel they want to do away the services too and just do it themselves and a lot of them already do.

We are dinosaurs!

As soon as the company you work for has - been sold to another company.

Trying To Find Part-time Or Full-time Employee Position (hospital/clinic)
Apr 30, 2013

If anyone knows of a hospital, clinic, or large practice offering remote full-time or part-time employee positions, I would really appreciate an email.  I have the sudden need to help support a family member long term (in addition to myself) and really need to find a long-term remote employee position for the stability.  Yes, I watch all the various employment sites and even individual hospital sites, but I was hoping that maybe, just maybe someone who works for a hospital that does th ...

I Can't Find A 2nd Shift Position
Jan 31, 2013

It cannot be this difficult to find a 2nd shift position where the company supplies the equipment. I have 18 years of acute care and clinic transcription experience, yet cannot find a job. I suppose it is a sign of the times in this field. I remember the days when I could open the paper and see job posting after job posting for transcriptionists. Now there is nothing out there any place. I have searched the job boards here as well and am finding more and more IC positions. I prefer to work ...

Overtime Because Of The Time Clock Time Zone Change?
Feb 06, 2011

It has been inconvenient, and maybe a bit confusing at times, to check my time card hours for my shift as, because of my time zone, part of my hours show up on the next day because I work 2nd shift. I wonder if I will get overtime for yesterday, even though I did not work overtime. But the last couple hours of yesterday show up as today, ...

MQ Rehire Policy For Part Time To Full Time
Apr 09, 2011

I worked for MQ full time and then went to part time last year, before finally quitting altogether because of health problems. I seem to remember an obscure policy that if you were full time and then went to part time, you could not go back to full time for a period of at least 1 year.  Can anyone verify that for me?
