How do you get over fear of typing after... - a bad QA audit?

Posted: May 20, 2015

I have been doing this for over 8 years and was on the STAR team, like that means anything, at my last job for over 6 years and never had a problem and then they got bought and laid off everyone. I have had my present job which pays only about 2/3 of what that one did for 4 months now and it has been nothing but abuse for the last month. They told me I was a star 6 weeks ago and now apparently I am dog dirt. Ah, how fleeting stardom is in this industry. They told me I did not do well on a QA audit but won't tell me the number and a higher up person is disputing the grading on one of my reports even though they say the numbers don't matter. I am supposed to wait and see what happens. They apparently don't have a set of grading standards and can randomly assign numbers to errors as they see fit. The end result is I am terrified to sign on and type a word and don't know what to do. I am extremely conscientious as I think anyone who gets in this field is, and I have been beating myself up over this and am teetering on turning in my notice. My husband says that probably won't accomplish anything and I just need to get over it. Easier said than done. I think I have a form of stage fright.

A bunch of idiots running the MT industry these days. What company do you work for, so I will know to NEVER apply with them?

It's devastating to get criticized when you feel you're doing your best, especially when the criticism is vague and from probably a less competent person than you are. Working for MM, you just have to ignore it and continue to do your best. They'll find fault no matter what. We've all be through it.

I know where you're coming from. I have been an MT going on 27 years now; always when working directly for a hospital, I was treated like a person, great pay and benefits. I am now semi-retired and "pick and choose" what I want to do. Thanks for letting me know to never go with MM.

Since the won't give you specifics about your "mistakes," don't sweat it! - KK

I would just log in and keep right on typing until they fire me. It seems a bit strange to me that the would tell you had a bad QA audit, but not give your score or tell you what your errors are. I think you are right to be thinking about giving your notice. Who wants to work for a sketchy company like that?

I've been doing this for more than 30 years. I used to always work for a hospital, but my last two hospital jobs outsources and I got stuck working for companies with QA people who were barely out of school and thought they knew it all. Unless they came at me with a blatant major error that I made, I ignored them. If they didn't like it, they could fire me. Bottom line is I'm productive and accurate. If they don't think I needed a comma in a particular sentence or I should have put an extra comma in, well they can bite me.

Here is what I do - and it seems to work for me

Fear of failure is in all of us but only the special amongst us know how to exploit that trait and turn our world into a desperate battle to get through each day. Shame on them. I hope you find a new job soon.

Here is what I do. I read the news, find an article of some horrendous thing, in my eyes, and get the details and when I begin my shift, on an axiety-ridden insecure kind of day (not everyday for me, just when I feel scared...unsure of what is going to happen, the unpredictable terrorizes me at this stage of my life when time is running out to do it over again).

I watch Shark Week shows for a couple minds, watch videos on YT of Mt. Everest climbers and their predicaments, the dead bodies on the trail (all absorbing this is), and then I return to my report or start my shift. The ball of anxiety in stomach is gone. I also light a candle, have beverage and

No need to be afraid - this is how these - companies treat EVERYBODY.

Ignore them, and just do the best that you can do. If they don't like it, it's their loss.

Fear of typing - Been there, done that

I was in a situation perhaps similar to yours. A bad audit made me question my judgment and caused me to re-think every single choice. I was paralyzed and fearful...my fingers wouldn't move, and then I started being criticized for not meeting production. It really was a no-win.

Then, out of the blue, I got a 100% quality audit! My production jumped by 35%, and QA people couldn't be more supportive...at times even seeking my opinion and, on occasion, assigning me my preferred worktypes. NOW my life would be wonderful, huh?

One month I was able to enjoy the privileges of believing I was worth the respect of my supervisors and the company in general. The next month, not so much, and my fear returned in full force. My hands seemed to have become spastic, my judgment impaired; decisions easily made 30 days earlier were made with trepidation, fear of reprisal.

I've left MT now, thankfully. The daily interpretation of my value as a person and employee being subject to anybody's definition at the moment. I simply could't do it anymore.

Stage fright is a perfect description of this phenomenon. This is the exact opposite of performing publicly with supreme confidence and assurance that your work/performance is expected to represent the highest ideals. The rare correction is appreciated and acknowledged.

Too much messed up in this industry to fix.

I feel your pain. I have been in constant angst over my QA scores for quite a while now. I finally realized that my QA has nothing to do with my skill as a medical transcriptionist, but rather my skill at training Voice Writer. I am going to continue to try to make QA happy, but I am not going to let it define how I feel about myself an my abilities. I have been in Medical transcription over 35 years and I know I am a solid transcriptionist. If they have a problem, they can fire me. At this point it might even be a relief. Of course, not everyone can have the freedom to say that, I am only responsible for myself at this point, but it is a very freeing attitude to have. Honestly, they are far from having the bugs out of Voice Recognition . . "HER-2 fingers were affected " Really? I find myself correcting voice recognition more than the docs. I think the company I work for really got sold a bill of goods when they got this system.

Facing My Fear

I know I have to leave this job at some point and go out into the real world, a real office, a real job.  Can anybody give me some advice on how to overcome my fears?  Journalling?  I can't afford counseling right now.  I have had to face these kinds of life changes in the past, but that was many years ago when I was younger.  I am not so young anymore and the thought of working outside the house is terrifying me.  I have checklists and have done extensive rese ...

Living In Fear Of Critical Error.
Jan 24, 2010

I've got this terror of critical errors.  I shudder every time I check my feedback, if I've left a marker (sometimes I've noticed they'll check the entire report, not just the marker.  Guess it depends on the MME).  What happens if you get a critical error?  Are you back on QA for awhile?  Do you get nasty e-mails?  Do you get canned?  40 lashes? ...

of a possible class action lawsuit. If you started taking things to the Labor Board you can bet MQ will be forced to let go of people. I'm not saying MM is not to blame because I DO believe they are sending 80% of the work to India for cheap labor and to avoid excessive taxes. They have a right to do that. MM provided work to American workers to provide some with jobs, not to make a profit. It's expensive to employ American MTs thanks to the US Govt, but that's for another day.&nb ...

The "Blog" Mentality Is Something Our Country And Industry Should Fear
Jul 18, 2012

There is a discussion below about blogs. I've felt for a long time that the whole idea of blogging has some danger flags. First, bloggers talk to us. They represent one philosophy or present facts from one person's viewpoint. Readers can often reply, but any dissenting viewpoints are quickly shut down. Independent thinking is discouraged in a number of ways. We are told what to think, what movies or TV shows to watch, what jobs we should take, what books we should read. It's usual ...

Typing Without QA
Apr 06, 2010

You know, I think I am typing better and faster without the fear of QA hanging over me.  I never thought they were extremely helpful anyways.  Usually they couldn't fill in the blanks and just nit-picked the report like a pecking bird.  I have never had a report sent back from a client (knock on wood) because they were unhappy with anything.  I spent far more time trying to please QA than the hospitals and doctors (and have told my supervisor that more than once).  ...

Typing Into EMR
Mar 20, 2012

For those of you who are typing directly into EMR/EHRs, how are you accessing the voice files? Is it coming directly from the EMRs or do you have to grab them separately. I've been asked to type directly into an office's EMR and am curious how this is going to work. It sounds like some are charging per audio minute and others per hour. I'm trying to keep my job relevant and go with the flow. Thanks to all who post their situations. At least we can all pull together, learn and keep ...

MQ Typing Versus ASR And Our Pay.
Oct 01, 2010

A very interesting post over in the VR forum which is proof IMO why we are going so broke doing ASR, and isn't even taking into account how horrible MQ DocQSpeech software is. Yesterday I had a 10-minute ASR report and I ended up typing at least 50% of it. Several times I thought of doing F11 on that report. Unfortunately, using F11 part way through a report while saving the text you have done so far on note pad, and then pasting it back in rather than starting all over, however, can ...

Missing HPs When Typing DSs?

Okay, I have had the suspicion that MQ programmed something when you bring up old reports when typing a discharge summary that the H&P doesn't show up.  Today, the dictator doing the DS plainly stated that she was reading right off the H&P.  I went to check in the old reports to maybe get some quick lines, but it wasn't there...as usual.  I typed what she said and realized that I had already typed this before and that I was the one that typed the original H&P ...

ASR Vs Straight Typing
