Has anyone heard of an ebook The Successful Medical Transcriptionist? - MrsProfit

I am a potential MT, and I was researching this field and came across an ebook called The Successful Medical Transcriptionist. It's by a lady named Shelley Wipper, she claims to have been an MT for 12 years and made a successful living doing it, and the book is supposed to give Step-by-Step insight in how to succeed in the industry. I just wanted to know if anyone the industry has in fact heard of her and her $50 ebook, or is her website thesuccessfulmedicaltranscriptionist.com just a scam. I don't have any $$$ to lose.

I wouldnt waste my money on that book or this field - sorry

You'll learn more just by reading through this board and all the different forums in my opinion.

Why pay someone $50 for a book of information you can gather yourself for free?

I would be very wary of her promises of this being a lucrative career. Again, read through these forums -- many MTs are filing for bankruptcy, losing homes, filing for unemployment because they have no work, working 2 or 3 jobs just to make ends meet, etc.

Not all MTs are in that boat, but certainly a large percentage. Most, if not all, have experienced a decrease in pay at the very least and not because they are lacking in talent. It simply does not pay the same as it did 5, 10 or 15 years ago.

I love my job and I am fortunate enough to be one of the MTs still making a decent living. I don't want to entirely discourage you from the field. BUT, it is no longer as simple as taking a few courses (as this woman says she did) to get into the field. Most MTs do not have the luxury of setting their own hours (as she claims on her website). Most MTs are not fairly compensated for their talents/experience/expertise (as this woman claims). There is no such thing as career advancement -- what would be be advancing to?? We are not generally respected as contributing members of the medical field (as she claims we are). Unless you work directly for a hospital/clinic, it is unlikely you will have much in the way of benefits or reasonably priced health insurance. If you go the independent contractor route, be prepared to pay self-employment taxes out the nose on top of your own insurance & business expenses. And we are being replaced by speech recognition & offshoring on a daily basis.

It is not all roses as this woman predicts. She just wants to sell her overpriced book IMO.

If you truly want to get into this field, you need to realize you will need to attend an accredited educational program, and you certainly will need editing/voice recognition skills. Plan on making minimum wage or less to begin. You may work up from that salary, you may not.

At Parkland Hospital the requirement to work as a Medical Transcriptionist is to have a certificate in medical transcription or at least one year of medical typing experience. Can someone please explain to me why Canada is considered OFFSHORE? I am updating my resume, and I am wondering if I should include Acute Care experience. I do multi-specialty clinic work and H&Ps, Discharge Summaries, Consults, etc. for various Veteran's Administration hospitals and clinics. I would like to say I do Acute Care on my resume to beef it up, but because it is for the Veteran's Administration, the Acute Care reports are usually for things typically related to older patients.
