Greedy companies, overhiring, etc. - NEPAMT

Posted: Dec 11, 2013

I am so tired of all of these companies overhiring.  I would log in on a daily basis, there would be 50+ jobs in the pool and I would feel somewhat comfortable that I am going to be able to get at least 10 or 15 of the jobs to type, only to find out that out of the 50 jobs in the pool, I am lucky to get 5 jobs.  These companies expect us to dependable, loyal to just working for them, etc., etc., and this is what we get in return.  We are told we are to do 1000 lines a day at a minimum which I would do back flips to actually be able to accomplish that goal by them having the work to do the 1000 lines a day.  Instead, there is a pool of work with 50 to 100 jobs daily and I am doing good to get 400 lines in a day.

I agree. I have gotten a part-time job that is not doing transcription just to have to have some kind of assurance that I will have something of a paycheck. It stinks this is the third day in a row that there has been no work and we are asked to stay off the system. Tired of having to work 6-8 different accts to not even get my line count. How are you supposed to be proficient on an acct when you only get a couple of jobs every couple of days? I love what I do and have been doing it a very long time, but I remember being told shortly after I started that it would be obsolete one day. Maybe that day is here.

I hate to say it, but I feel as if I have gotten to the point where I need to get the job typed as fast as I can and grab the next one before it disappears.

It's almost like the companies that overhire are shooting themselves in the foot because I can see where the MT takes the attitude of getting the work out as fast as he/she can and not spending as much time proofing so he/she can keep grabbing the work. In the long run that costs money having to do unnecessary QA'ing or constantly replacing MT's that are producing poor-quality work or MTs who are just fed up and move on.

I noticed when you question the company about why there are so many MTs in the pool, the account manager/owner has a tendency to get on the defensive or frustrated because you are asking for more work. Why can't they just be upfront and honest?
Yes and you won't be surprised to know... - bsel

I have been actively recruited for MModal. They have been sending me emails about testing so that I can "come back". So yes, I used to work for them and couldn't stand it any longer, health, no money, you guys know the drill and quit. How can they hire people when I read this board. UNREAL! I feel for anyone trying to pay their bills based on their income from this disgusting company. Talk about BAH, HUMBUG!!!!!!

I had to explain NJA to my non-MT friends like this... - clb

You work at your job where you clock in, work, clock out, go home. You're paid by the hour no matter what. Now imagine that you show up to work, stand there all day doing absolutely nothing, then clock out. One minute after you leave, a customer wants to buy something so you are forced to reopen and let them come in to shop. After you were there all day with no customers. And you didn't get paid until the customer bought something.

I also explained it like this: Imagine 10 people standing around a pool of water. Someone lifts a strainer (collander) out of the water and 20 hands reach out and get water. Now add 10 more people around the pool and 20 more hands reaching out for water, but there's only enough for 10 people not 20.

Ahhhh

It may sound like duh obvious to an MT, but I literally had to explain it like that to my friend because she kept saying how easy my job was and I just snapped one day.

Who is paid by the hour? - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
You said "paid by the hour no matter what." I'm not sure what you mean.

Meaning any non-MT job that pays hourly... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Any job that pays by the hour. You are always paid for every hour worked, whether you were super busy or "standing around." Unless you are commission only. Example, McDonald's employees are paid hourly. They're paid for each hour they work no matter what they did during their shift.

There are still MT jobs that pay by the hour. There are about 12 left in the country. - I have one of them. sm

But they are installing EHR, so this will be gone by summer but yeah, there still exists a utopic world where MT's get fair pay, generous PTO and don't have to do 3000 lines a day to make a living. As I said in my comment above, I will NEVER work from home for an MTSO again. OMG never. It is the absolute worst job imaginable.

I do MT in-house by the hour. I 'have worked for 10 MTSO's. - sm

And I will NEVER work at home for an MTSO by the line again. Ever. Because of that perfectly accurate description of what we go through working from home. I suspect it is against labor laws. If everyone were in one building, they would NEVER get away with it. My in-house job is installing EHR software soon and we all know how my job is going to end. Its the same old story. But I will NEVER do MT from home for an MTSO again. I can make minimum wage doing anything. In-house? I still make pretty good money, not the heyday money but between $15-20 with lots of PTO and cheap health insurance. I clock in, I do my job, take my mandatory breaks/lunch, go home. I work 8-5, M-F.

When this job ends, which it will, I will try to find something else that pays comparably in the medical field or as an admin assistant. I've been taking classes and I think I'm going to take an Excel class so I can put that in my tool box. But I will never, ever work for an MTSO from home doing MT again. Ever.

It so totally isn't worth it. to the poster: I've snapped 50 times in the last 3 years! If I have launched 1 spittle-flecked rant against offshoring, I've launched 1000. :-)

it's their TAT, probably contracted for a rediculously low one - and this works for them.NM

MTSOs Being Greedy
Jul 27, 2010

Let's get to the point here on why most MTSOs are greedy.  It is not because the MT makes mistakes or should make mistakes.  That is not the issue.  The real issue is that MTSOs don't pay what a quality MT is worth!  That's where the "greedy" comes in.  It also shows that the MTSO obviously doesn't really care about the transcriptionist at all.  If an MTSO pays really low, this says to me they are treating the MTs as robot "worker bees" work ...

For The Record, MTSOs Who Are NOT Greedy...
Nov 28, 2011

I want to make it clear that this is not a rail against all MTSOs; there are MTSO's still out there who are NOTmotivated by greed, and who continue to pay their employees very well.I have worked for companies which historically have paid employees much higher CPL than other companies - Keystrokes and MTP (both based in Illinois, owned by former MTs, and as far as I know, all work still on US soil) - and several of these companies actually DO pay employees "more than fair" hou ...

Warning to all. As Nuance controls our industry, see coming your way even more drastic cuts in pay to everyone across the entire industry. So as I redo my resume instead of producing 344 lines per hr, Nuance says my line speed is only 176 lph.  They have also eliminated the late shift,  weekend differentials entirely as if "What difference does it make?" Rise up those at Nuance. Since they ignore half your output ignore h ...
