FILLING THE GAP w/ other forms of transcription - KTL

Wondering if anyone out there has ever thought of filling the gap by moving into other forms of transcription... As EMR increases, pay dwindles and opportunities for traditional transcription diminish, I'm thinking that it might be wise to broaden my scope a bit. I've thought about court reporting (as a broad spectrum...not just actually in the court room) and other forms of transcription other than within the medical community. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this or other such ideas? Any networking tips? I'm definitely keeping my MT job but the writing's already on the wall and I'm trying to be proactive.

[ In Reply To ..]I did transcription for podcasts and business meetings for a little while via oDesk. I had a good client that paid well and everyone in the audios spoke very clearly. The first couple audios weren't very lucrative since I had to figure out the format he required, but once I had that down, it was cake and great $$$. Problem was that after about a year, he went with another transcriber that offered him a basement price that I just couldn't compete with (from the Philippines, of course). And THAT is the problem with freelancing....way too much competition from overseas that we just can't compete with. Even a lot of so-called domestic services are hard to compete with because they offshore or they have the work down to such a precise science.
IMHO, transcription is really not lucrative anymore unless you've trained and are using SR (like Dragon) on your own end like the big dogs are doing.
Apparently, there's MTs out there making mad money still, but I have yet to know someone personally that is doing that, as all the MTs I know face-to-face are in the same boat as me.

[ In Reply To ..]I agree. Some are laughable. One yesterday wanted to pay 20 cents a page for single spaced transcription. I do legal transcription and that pay is a little better. Overall, though, the people in foreign countries bid so low you can't compete. It's sad.

For those of you waiting to know just how bad you will be taken at SS regarding all the time spent filling in demos and other "stuff." There has to be a fine line between vertabatim and what is transcribed. :- Blanks are sometimes left for a reason, and anyone with the knowledge they should have to do QA should know when the value and/or unit of measurement is impossible. The measurement unit the doctor dictated, probably by mistake, was impossible. If that value was so, that duct would have been half the height of the patient.
