Do you have to go to school to work as a Pharm Tech? - leaving MT

Posted: Jan 04, 2011

I am considering leaving the MT profession to become a Pharmacy Tech.  I thought about going to school to be a rad tech but I am 40 and need to be making an income while I go to school and I just don't know if I can hack working and school fulltime.  How do you do it?  Anyway, I thought maybe a pharmacy tech certificate program would work better and I could get started working faster.  My question is.....do you have to go to school to be a pharmacy tech or just pass the state certification test?  Has anyone taken any of the online courses for this or should I go to a campus (which is so far & gas prices are awful).  All I know is that the MT profession is not paying my bills so I have to do something.  Any advice?  Thanks

What state are you in? You can find out the info online. Where I am, school is not required and certificate is not required either but has to be gotten within a year of your employment hiring. Anyone can sign up to test but I've heard the test is pretty hard if you have not worked in the field before. There is a practice exam you can buy though. My daughter took the school and the test and could not pass the test. Said it was nothing they learned in school and was mostly as the above poster said about calculating formulas, knowing generics versus brands, normal dosages, etc.

You sound like me . . . - nn

I have been taking my pre-req courses for the Rad Tech program to apply this February, but they only accept 25 students each year and use a weighted criteria sheet to determine who gets in. They say at least 60 people apply each year, so I am looking at a backup plan. Where I live, you can have your pharmacy tech certificate in 2 semesters. I thought maybe I could work as a pharmacy tech while I am waiting to get into the Rad Tech program and then could work while I went through school. You are not too old. I am 38 and starting over. I graduated in 1992 with my associate degree in secretarial science and have been typing for the last 18 years. I think you would have a better chance at getting a job as a pharmacy tech with schooling. Most schools help you find a job once you complete the program (at least our schools do). That is a big help.

I considered Rad Tech - leaving MT

I considered going to school to become a Rad Tech but there are not any local schools offering it. I also heard that once you complete your pre-reqs you are put on a waiting list for the rad tech program. I also considered pharmacy tech, medical coding, or medical assistant programs which give you a certificate when completed, but I just do not know how employers feel about a "certificate" versus an associates degree in any subject. I know that the MT profession is so wishy-washy and unstable. You never know if there is work available when you log on for your shift and then you sit at your computer all day waiting and maybe get 300 lines. This does not pay my bills. I need something stable. I have to do something soon too

Mar 14, 2011

I am a burnt out MT of 13 years and am going back to school.  The MT profession has failed me and my family so I need to make a career change. I am trying to decided if I want to go to be a medical coder, phlebotomist, and/or pharmacy technician.  One of our community colleges offers an associates degree which includes a phlebotomy certificate and a pharmacy tech certificate.  They also offer a medical coder certificate alone.  Do you think it would be easier to fin ...

Has Anyone Ever Gone Through Allied School For Coding? Other School Recommendations?
Jun 24, 2014

I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through Allied School in California for billing & coding.  If so, how was your experience?  Were you able to find work in coding after finishing the course and getting your certification?  I have been a medical transcriptionist for the past 10-11 years and am now looking at getting into coding.  My best friend and I are going to take a course together.   If you wouldn't recommend Allied as a school, who would you reco ...

Coding School - Considering Going To A School
Sep 22, 2011

I am an MT who is considering going to school for coding.  I am thinking about taking the course through Andrews and will probably start next year because I will have to save up some of the money.  I am wondering if you think coding may eventually go the way of medical transcription and be outsourced to India.  I do not think it will so I just wanted to get the opinions of other coders.  I realize it will be a hard course but I think it will be worth the effort.  Any thoughts would be appre ...

Radiology Tech Job?
Dec 05, 2012

Does anybody know what is involved in becoming a radiology tech? You know, doing mammos, CTs, etc.  I know one needs schooling, but is there a lot of math, geometry, spatial stuff, and things like that?  I am NOT good in those things, so I don't want to invest any time or  money trying to do something that I know I'm not good at. Thanks, just checking into other careers besides this!   ...

Tech People
Oct 11, 2014

Honestly, why is it that tech wants to make an MTs' life miserable. Just got a new thing to fill out and I cannot open it. I have never used Excel if that is what it is. My computer has no program for me to open it. At any rate, I wonder why these people have to make things so hard. This new computer, a Windows 7 (which I had to have to do my work) is so complicated now. You don't get these other programs like you did on the other computers. You have to buy Word, Excel ...

FutureNet Tech
Dec 16, 2014

I was hired by FNT a couple of months ago and have found their editing platform less than ideal as it relates to production.  It's awkward and cumberson, allowing neither keyboard or mouse proficiency; it's a bad combination of both. I'm wondering if anyone out there has worked at FutureNet and found the secret to making money with their no-name platform that's Word based but does not allow auto-correct and has reassigned Word keyboard commands for their own use. Also, ...

Think I ought to take a shot at this even though I have no prior experience with filing, records, etc.? ...
