Dianne Sawyer's story regarding medical records - I just went to ABC website

Posted: Sep 15, 2012

and at the bottom there is a section for comments, I then selected re: her news show.  I asked her to do a followup regarding the off-shoring situation.  Please, let's try to get this story out!  If she gets enough emails, maybe we can make this happen.  She's the person to do it, I think.  TYIA.

Just the way the MTSO's want it - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
What's with the insults? You say to keep dreaming, nobody cares but us. Well I for one will not stop dreaming. We need to get the information out. MTSO's just want to keep us quiet and under their thumb. No matter how much you try, you will not silence us. We are tired and fed up and desperate. Desperate people are moved to action.

The information HAS been put out.... - anon

and by more than just a few. You are not the first or only one who has tried to get the message across to somebody who will listen...it is and always has been met with stoney silence, and nothing ever changes. but knock yourself out...you will find the same wall that everybody else who has tried in the past has found. good luck to you.
So what, we just give up? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Is that your answer? Just give up? Look at Monsanto and how hard it is fighting GMO labeling. The people who are for the labeling have not given up. They believe in what they are working for, no matter they are up against multi-billion megafood companies. Change has to start someone, someone to believe. It is because of this defeatest attitude like yours that we are here now. I choose to believe things can change for the better, keep a positive attitude. Isn't that what so many of you spout off about, the negativity on this board? Well how about trying some to benefit all of us instead of bringing everybody down?
I can't believe this negativity - from the original poster

All it would take is less than 1 minute out of your lives to take a positive step. Don't you think if ABC got 5,000, 10,000 emails they might see a good story here and follow up?

give me a break! I may be negative about the whole thing, but that is because I have battled against more than one company who tried to strip me of my pride, my money, and any potential income that I may get as an MT, and nobody ever fought harder for what was right. I still ended up losing and so have many others! Being "positive" is not going to bring our jobs back, any more than raking Obama over the coals daily on the politics board is going to change the way he does things, or get us out of debt. Some things are just too far gone to ever get back, and MT is one of them. give up?? no. Move on? yes.
very well stated - anMT
[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't pay much attention to the subject of offshoring jobs, until MT became involved. Now it's real, hits home. A lot of people feel this way and that's why "no one cares." Until it happens to them. A few (and I use the word "few" loosely), digruntled and displaced US MTs are not going to change the trend of offshoring. We're a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. So I agree in not giving up, but moving on.

It's also Epic, SR, technology in general. I'm in the "it's no longer viable" camp.
The time to have "saved" this job was - back in 1990 or earlier.
[ In Reply To ..]
Does anyone really need to be encouraged to take a min wage, no respect job that is on shaky ground anyway? Like OP said, it's not only from offshoring. I am sure they are working just as hard to eliminate the Indians as they are to eliminate us. Better to face reality and find a good paying job that can be a real career.
it isn't negativity-- - it is reality
[ In Reply To ..]
The genie is already out of the bottle, with wages and low respect we get. What makes anyone think MT can be restored to what it was when we've already proven we will, can and have worked for less than 8 cpl?? Just time to move on.

I personally don't want to fight for a job that has caused me so much grief, to be honest.
But, it isn't just MT that's going away. It's just - about every job there is. sm

I feel sorry for the poor fools who think coding is safe; that it's worth forking out money to go to school to learn. It's leaving, too. It's already being outsourced to some MTSO's, and we all know what the next step to outsourcing is, it's offshoring.

Still think, "Oh, no... never happen. You have to know too much and think too much to be a coder! Coding produces revenue for the hospital". Sure it does. Just like radiologists, and more and more of their work is being done electronically offshore.

Yes, we SHOULD have stood our ground and fought this back in 1990. And if we don't stand our ground and fight now, we'll be saying the same thing 10 years from now. Or even 5 years from now.

Look at other countries where there are only 2 classes: The wealthy, and the poor, and take note at how well it's working for the poor in those countries. That's us in 5-10 years.
Your moniker is fitting. Just because you have no - fight left in you doesnt mean we dont.
[ In Reply To ..]
And who's to say where all this offshoring stops? Just hope and pray the next field you get into doesn't also get sold to the lowest-bidding Third World country.

If offshoring isn't stopped, or at least slowed to a trickle, we're all doomed to live in a country where the only work available will NOT support us, even if we spend 24/7 doing it.
Obama tried to stop offshoring - the Republicans put a stop to it

I'm not sure if either party started the offshoring of medical transcription. I do know who is responsible for signing the free trade (NAFTA) bill. That was Bill Clinton about two months before his second term ended. BTW, he is a Democrat, not a Republican. This free trade thing has really hurt manufacturing and some other areas. I'm not sure what started this offshorting thing -- with MT going to India. Most likely, neither of the political parties. Maybe some greedy MTSO's.

and what exactly have YOU done to change things? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
don't stand there and point a finger at me when you have not exactly put forth a winning effort either. If you had, I am sure we would ALL be working wonderful jobs. right??
Fought tooth and nail, believe me. Because it isn't - just about MT. Its about ALL U.S. jobs.
[ In Reply To ..]
Take off the blinders, and have a look around. I'm already looking for another line of work so I can leave MT. But I also know that no matter what I do next, or what I go to school to learn to do, unless we find a way to stop giving it all to India (and worse, China), it won't matter.

Most of us have already lost any hope of retirement, or ever owning a home. Now more and more of us will have no healthcare, exactly at a time when we're starting to age. And no jobs, at a time when it's more critical than ever that we keep working.

Most likely, this is a "war" that will happen one of two ways: In the courtroom, or in the streets. Look at the rest of the world - most of the time, people who have nothing left, and who are backed into a corner, will stand up and fight back. If enough do that simultaneously, often those at the top get their wealth forcibly removed from their posession.
Fought tooth and nail, how? Specifics, please. - nm

It doesn't matter if one is applying to a college, or for a job, trying to pass a test, obedience-train a dog, potty-train a child, learn mathematics or another language, shoot hoops with a basketball, kick a field goal, or drive a car... how many things in life are NOT achievable on the first try?

The same goes with getting the message out on offshoring. And I'm not talking about JUST offshoring of medical transcription. I'm talking about offshoring of everything from manufacturing jobs, to IT jobs, to radiologist jobs. It's ALL going offshore!

Every night on TV, they're all going "whaa, whaa, whaa... high unemployment, crappy economy, foreclosures, bankruptcy, no medical care", ad infinitum. How often do the media, the political candidates, the Senate, or ANYONE, talk about maybe reversing our country's trend to sell itself to the lowest offshore bidder? almost NEVER!

This message has to be brought out and repeated again and again and again, until somebody does something about it. The squeaking wheel gets the grease.

Best action is to get your own accounts... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I keep reading all of these posts about greedy MTSOs, heartless MTSO's,nasty QA.... the list goes on forever. Why do you continue to work for them then? Just obtain your own clients! It might be a lot more expensive, but you will be somewhat of your own boss, only having to deal with the clients themselves, and is certainly more rewarding than working for somebody else.
Its pretty hard to get your own accounts these days.... - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
as most private physicians have gone with the point and click EMR and/or VR. Nothing left to get.
No, keep trying... - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
It is not hard to obtain your own accounts. I am turning down clients left and right. it just takes some persistent hard work and a lot of cold calls, but eventually you will build up a reputation. I specialize in clients who went EMR and have come back to traditional transcription.
Clients would drop MTSOs faster, too, if we would - all refuse to edit their VR for them.
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think there are many doctors who CHOOSE to have their dictation offshored, or to use VR. They have it rammed down their throats. If we just out and out refused to edit that crap, they'd have little choice but to seriously going back to live transcriptionists. Or paying more for VR because we refuse to edit it for chump change anymore.
(Insert "consider" between "seriously" & "going". - Sorry, Im too tired to type tonite.

Take action-get your own accounts and quit working for MTSOs if you feel this way - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Show some action then and obtain your own accounts instead of working for MTSOs. I am so tired of everybody namecalling on MTSOs as though they were the devil. Do something about it then. Create competition and take back job status and pay rates. Obtain your own accounts. There should be more MTs obtaining their own accounts and giving the nationals a run for their money. Instead of everybody complaining about wages and NJA, go get your own clients. You will be a lot happier! I warn you though, it costs a lot more, and you will have a lot more responsibilities.
Stop telling us what to do. Not everyone can be - their own boss, or even wants to. msg

Just because a person prefers to be an employee doesn't mean they deserve to be ground under the boss's heel. And you sound like one of those bosses.
Instead of telling us WHAT to do...tell us HOW to do it! - anon2
[ In Reply To ..]
I just do not know how to "market" myself in order to obtain a client. Give me/us some pointers on how to go about it instead of just yelling at us to do it! I know I can do the job, extra responsibilities and all, I just do not know how to GET the job in the first place! SO STOP YELLING AND START HELPING!! thank you.

First, build a website and hire a company to publish it on sites. Then, have cards and advertisements printed and market yourself, or even fliers. Vista Print is cheap but effective. Also word of mouth is the best way. Another way is to network at your local AHDI chapter, as a lot of MTs who have their own accounts are looking for help and soon to retire or have too much work on their desk already and will give you accounts. Also, working for smaller companies will get your name out there, or at least it did for me. Another great way is when you see your own doctors, type up nicely your medical info. I have had lots of physicians and office staff very impressed and try hire me. Market yourself whereever you can. I even landed an account when my husband ripped his ear off, as his plastic surgeon hired me, who I had cold called just 1 month prior.

Also, you will need to set up dictation/transmission methods, purchase a dictation system, extra phone lines, FTP, a good quality laser all-in-one, etc. You will pretty much need 2 of everything, as clients do not want to hear you are down because of equipment problems. You will also need a dependable IT person and somebody on hand to assist with overflow. Good luck!
Thank you....this helps - anon3
[ In Reply To ..]
this helps a lot, but all of the above costs money and when you are out of a job totally, have no spous to depend on, and living on savings it took you 10 years to build, options for all of this are slim....but i took notes and will start somewhere. thanks for being so kind. sorry about your oral surgery. hope you are better now.
I hear you there.. - anon

I am worse than no spouse. I have a spouse with no job and just costs me as well as all my medical costs, something that ate all of my savings. Hang in there.... I got a lot of clients through a cheap website I built using the Yahoo templates, worked better than the expensive website I had done a few years later, which I since canceled. In fact, I got 2 clients the first day it was up, which is more time effective than going door to door.

I would imagine there are others who care: Steel - workers, tech workers, etc. n/M

Medical Records Tech Job

A local hospital is hiring a medical records tech.
