Computers reading x-rays now? - Hmmmm

Posted: Apr 02, 2010

I have a friend who lead MT at a radiology group and she tells me that they are using software that reads parts of an x-ray. It can detect where the calcifications are. I wonder if the radiologists are thinking they may out of a job just like us someday.

This has been around for a while - ex-mammoMT

At the mammography clinic I used to work for they had a CAD machine, it digitalized the mammogram and when the radiologist was reading the hard copy film there was a little screen that showed where the CAD pointed out possible problem areas. The radiologists said they didn't use it too much because it would pinpoint obvous vascular calcifications or other things that were not worrisome but the subtle important changes were missed. This was 7 years ago.

Now there's a scary thought, when you consider how - flaky most software is. Witchdoctor might be bette

Another scary thought is when they send US x-rays via Internet to be read in India, Philippines, etc.

And what about those robot "doctors" that cruise by your bed in some hospitals? (Yes, they really exist). I'm sorry... bring me a live, ENGLISH-SPEAKING doctor, and pull the plug on the 'bot.

Technology IS amazing - Ima MT

Doctors, too, are under the gun for more, cheaper, faster, so they have to find ways to make it happen. The technology is there, why not use it?

And while I get your spouting off about x-rays being sent to be read in India, etc, they are also sent to multiple areas in the US (Nighthawk ring a bell) so that docs in various places can still have night coverage. Not all of it goes overseas.

you do understand it is only calcification software. - nm

Our rads use computer aided detection to read mammograms, it helps in patients with dense breasts, the computer picks up things they might miss with the naked eye. I seriously doubt if any radiologist jobs are threatened.

Remember when we used to type EKGs? - Ima MT

That was my very first MT gig when I was 15. Now many of them are read by computer too. Times, they are a-changin'

that's not new: Echo and US.... - comp

What probably will have a bigger impact (sm) - Long time MT

Some US hospitals are contracting with radiologists in India to read the x-rays. With digital x-rays they can easily transmit the x-ray offshore and pay an Indian doctor far less than a US one.

That and they can send a lot of radiology work overseas to save money. The only positions that are safe are positions that are on-hands with the patient.

Not To Smart With Computers
