CERTIFICATION QUESTIONS/CONCERNS - slr

Posted: Apr 09, 2014

I have questions/concerns regarding becoming a Registered and/or Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (formerly known as Medical Transcriptionist). I have been a medical transcriptionist/editor for 14 years and never took the time to prepare for and take the exam to become certified. I have been reviewing items on the AHDI website and would like some feedback regarding the benefits of becoming certified and/or if you feel it is necessary. Also, if there are other organizations that offer this certification. Thanks very much!

Will it increase your pay enough to make doing it... and the continuing education to keep it up... worth it? Most people will give a resounding NO!

I certainly would take the certification test and plan to. Even if you do not make more money per line, many jobs require you to be a CMT. It also gives you better qualifications when job hunting!

I am going to politely disagree. Many MTSOs are not taken in by the whole AHDI schtick and in fact, I would not give it any weight at all.

You need to do some research about the AHDI before you - feed them money for a useless piece of paper.

My God. This organization backs offshoring so they can sell their bit to certify India too. Every time the AHDI needs money they change something (CERRITIFED HEALTHCARE DOCUMENTATION SPECIALIAST - oh, puh-leeze, right up there with Rosanne's Domestic Godess schtick) and charge more. Just like they change 4-5 rules in the BOS every now and then (used to be yearly), and call it an update to sell the damn thing over and over again at a hefty cost.

I've been an MT for 40 years and not one job cared about the certificate that I had acquired when I first started for 8.00 bucks and a postage stamp. Back then they were the AAMT and 'it' was called CMT. Neither the AAMT and their claim to keep standards high in order to get us on the PROFESSIONAL payscale, nor their piece of toilet paper with my nameo on it ever got me a position or more money. And that was when jobs were abundant and we all were thriving, pay was 15 cpl at most, average 11-12. WHAT'S IT NOW, huh? This is the real world, anything you hear otherwise is just AHDI schooze right into your bank account.

Read the archives, info goes back decades. before you do anything. Or simply ask in a new post for an opinion on the AHDI.

Sorry! Sounds harsh, it's a sore subject to me, probably most of us. Take no offense, original poster...and if you did, I apologize.

Hate the AHDI. I actually was considering recertification. - What a scam.

Even realizing that AHDI has done nothing for the MT profession, perhaps against my better judgment, I was considering becoming certified again. I got my CMT once, eons ago, but did not keep up my certification.

So I looked at the AHDI website for info, and I was shocked at the all hoops you have to jump through and the very high cost of the certification test!

It made me extremely angry. Never again will those scam artists get their hands on my now-really-hard-earned money!

The AHDI paper is about as useful as the prize that falls out of the Crackerjack box. If someone wants to belong to a faux "sorority," then go for it. Otherwise, keep the money and take yourself out to a nice dinner.

You have nailed it exactly. I put more value on a roll of Charmin that I do on anyting hawked in the market place by the AAMT or whatever the initials of its current incarnation are. If you ever want to read something interesting, get the depositions from the transcriptionists' lawsuit against MQ several years ago. Yes, they are public. (You will have to pay a copying fee.) The AAMT sold us all out a looooong time ago. They got in bed with the squid and with offshoring. And people still think they are okay? Just to have some "certification?" What authority do they have to certify anybody on anything? I, too, have been an MT for 40 years, have never had trouble getting work, and have never once been asked for a CMT. Lots of MTSOs don't buy the hype. I didn't.

THANKS! - SLR

I was glad to read these posts. I don't think I share the same animosity towards ADHI as many of you, but I had decided at one point to get recertified (I received my CMT in the 1990s and let it lapse). I'm a pretty sharp cookie, and I found the directions to get recertified really hard to follow. The blueprint was equally difficult to navigate. Becoming recertified is on my global to-do list, but practically speaking, I probably won't ever get around to it. The directions are way too vague.

CONCERNS

You all need to contact your state senators, govenor, Geraldo at Fox News, CNN, the White House directly, etc....something, anyone. TELL them that you have concerns with medical reports being transcribed outside of the country.  1.  Our paychecks are going down because of it--because no matter the cost of living here, as long as Pakistan or where ever it is being done at does it for less, where do you think they will go?  Meanwhile, we will either have to stick with it and learn ...

I have grave concerns regarding our profession.  Many of you do as well.  I am not normally one who dwells on this sort of thing, but I have seen our profession go from being able to support myself to a profession of hardly making it.  I have had to drop my health insurance in order to pay rent and utilities.  At my age, this is not a good thing at all.  I have scaled back on everything.  The only luxury I have is I rent 1 movie a week and then only very inexpensive ...

and I suggest you all do too. To your TSM. Allow some time for answers; however, I would keep e-mailing/calling and don't let up. Besides it might be slightly illegal is the fact that it isn't fair. When I get some answers I will relay them on here for you all. Please e-mail as well and ask. We need to be proactive. There is some unfair stuff going on and I didn't go to school and work doing this for 12 years now for some company to do this to me. I feel we are all worth way more ...

Normal Templates - Concerns (sm)
Nov 30, 2012

We are inundated with sloppy dictators, perhaps the ones that can't use VR. We know how much they hate to dictate repetitive ROSs and PEs, thus they love using templates, or paragraphs from previous reports. Does anyone else note a lot of doctor errors in using these methods, i.e. racing through and not changing all the template details? I have found that NPs and female doctors are able to multitask and get this right, but the only males that can do this are the older ones who have a lot o ...

Certification?
Apr 27, 2010

I took online coding program years ago as well as an MT program.  I decided to go into MT but am wanting to start back up with coding again.  Is it worth it to do another coding program or to pursue a certification?  I'm not sure the money I'd need to spend would really justify either.  I've been doing a lot of research and while certification is preferred, it's not always a requirement in job descriptions.  Thanks ...

Is CMT Certification Worth It?
Feb 14, 2010

What are your feelings about obtaining your CMT credentials when VR (at least with my employer) doesn't follow BOS or acknowledge the styles, forms and practices that, at one time were the norm? I get blown away with sentence structure and grammar these days.  Do you think one should become certified with the latest trend with VR?  Seems to me "No", not worth it, unless I moved on to a company who did not use VR. But, then again, if this is the trend hospitals and companies a ...

Certification Requirements
Oct 26, 2010

I am curious about whether one has to have a certain amount of experience in coding before you can take the CCA or CCs certification exam.  I have had 20 years of A&P and know a considerable amount about disease process.  I have been studying coding on my own for about a year now.  I know that your chances for passing the test are better if you have been in the coding business for several years, but has anyone out there taken the CCS just by studying and utilizing their life e ...

Considering Pursuing MT Certification

Hello, I am looking for some input. I have been a veterinary technician for several years and am very well versed in medical terminology as I have published and lectured. I am looking for a change and MT appeals to me for many reasons. My main concern is being unable to find a job after completing certification for I have no contacts and have heard of "newbies" having a hard time finding work. Obviously I do not want to spend money only to find no way in afterwards. Does anyone know of progra ...

Question About CMT Certification
Jun 02, 2011

Hi all, I have been a transcriptionist for right at 6 years.  I have been thinking about certification, but wondered if I should do it.  The only problem I see in obtaining it is my experience.  I have basically been doing clinic work with my company and a little acute care, but not much else.  I know that pay wise, it really doesn't seem to help having the credential and I think that is a true shame, because I know the MTs who do have the credential have worked very ha ...

Mandatory Certification?
Jan 14, 2012

I was told by someone who attended a recent ICD-10 academy (for trainers) that the OIG is requiring all (current) coders to be certified by the October, 2013, ICD-10 implementation date.  I am aware of the OIG's compliance guidelines, but nowhere in that document do I find anything about mandatory certification. Also, I am not sure if they meant certified in ICD-9 or 10, but it is my understanding that the last ICD-9 CCS/CCS-P exam will be given in March, 2013, and at this point nobod ...

Passed The CPC-H Certification!

I just got my results in the mail from AAPC that I passed the certification exam for CPC-H! Coding is very difficult and I had quite a time completing the online CPC-H course offered by AAPC. I started in the Spring and just got certified. I want all the MTs out there to know that terminology, A&P are helpful to already know! It was not easy to get this certificat ...

CBCS Certification?
Mar 05, 2013

My junior college offers (in partnership with Gatlin Education, now called ed2go) an online coding and billing course that prepares one for the certified billing and coding specialist certification, offered by the National Healthcareer Association.  That's a new one on me.  They also have a program that leads to the CCS, but they caution that it is not an entry level program and is designed for people who are already coding.  Can anyone tell me yes or no about this CBCS ...

CCS CERTIFICATION EXAM
May 05, 2015

Can someone tell me how many questions there are that pertain to medical terminology, A and P, etc as opposed to actual coding questions on the CCS coding certification test? I am an MT, have basic knowledge of terminology, but there are so many new terms that I must learn, not to mention the A and P section.  I do the lessions, do the chapter review tests, take the weekly exams and do well, but I do not think I am retaining too much after I test.     The coding tests, however, ...

Online MT Courses For Certification....
Jun 14, 2012

Does anyone know if there are any online MT courses for certification that have financial aid?  Most of the ones I have come across so far have no financial aid, want payment up front, or want at least 200/month payment, which I cant do.  I was a MT for about 10 years, got out of it for a couple of years, and cannot seem to get a job now that I would like to return to it, so thought getting certified would help.  With our financial state though, I cannot afford a big payment of an ...
