It's a rather sad day, but a long time coming. After 24 years as an IC with a damn good client, making really good $ and having a respectable job, today I gave notice. I used to write my own ticket as a small MTSO without any question. Sadly, the bottom-line paper pushers finally got their way with installing VR and the writing was on the wall. I gave it a shot, I trained in editing. I stayed on during the transition, taking a pay cut to less than .3cpl because I did not want to abandon my docs. After a month of holding a calculator every day, trying to figure out some way to make this work, I decided I just cannot do it. I gave notice because I would like to get a good nights sleep, get to the gym and maybe get my hair to grow back once the stress subsides. I've always been an advocate and sometimes a mentor in this field, but today I walk away. Fortunately, I am finishing up my HIT degree this semester, so I can focus on that.
I wish everyone else in this situation the very best and for those of you still trying to make it work, I feel your pain. Good luck in the future.
