All-in-one computer versus laptop - mt3

Posted: Sep 27, 2011

I am looking to get a new computer and having trouble deciding if I should get an all-in-one computer (I love the idea of not having a tower any more) or a laptop.  I was not sure if a laptop could handle being on 12-14 hours plus a day without burning it up.  Any input would be appreciated because I am sure there are pros and cons of both that I have yet to think of and this is such a big purchase I don't want to have buyer's remorse later on.

Thanks in advance!

Laptop on all day - One who knows

I don't actually use the laptop for transcription, but it is powered up and running 24/7 for other reasons. When I'm not actually using it (on my lap) I actually have it sitting on top of 4 upside-down ceramic cups so that air can get underneath it. I've had it running for literally months at a time that way, with no apparent ill effects.

When I next replace my desktop system, I am going to replace it with a laptop, but will continue to use an external USB keyboard which will be more appropriate for transcription. That way, I will be able to set the new machine on top of something so air can circulate underneath and keep it cooler.

I am not sure about the all-in-one computers - although I think they are

very tidy, which I like. I have a 10-year-old Dell laptop which has been on pretty much 10 to 12 hours a day since I got it, and only recently has it started acting funny (still comes on but won't connect to the internet).

One thing to check before you upgrade, make sure the platform you use is compatible with a new computer. I am still having to use that antique Dell and another 10-year-old desk top to work on DocQscribe because the computer I bought a couple of months ago won't work with it.

Tigerdirect.com and Newegg.com usually have some good deals.

I believe tigerdirect had a good deal on some laptops for around 200 bucks.

Depends on what you do with your computer though. I do a lot of editing photos/videos...you get way more bang for your buck on desktops as opposed to laptops. Laptops you're paying more for the compact size as opposed to performance. But if you're only using it for work, and nothing else, then a cheap laptop might work just fine.

I have used both - I like both

My primary work computer is a Sony Vaio all-in-one that I bought about 2 years ago. It came with Vista as the OS, which has been fine with me because the platform I use is not dependent on my operating system. I have really, really enjoyed the large screen. I had to buy a USB extension so I can plug in all my stuff because it is limited (like a laptop) on the number of USBs that are available. I have multiple foot pedals, thumb drives, etc., that I need to plug in.

Unfortunately my Sony's hard drive died a few weeks ago and I had to replace it. While at the shop, I took in a licensed copy I had of XP and asked them to install that instead of re-installing Vista or upgrading to Wins 7. I can now install and run Word 2003 and older programs that I could not get installed on the laptop that I used temporarily while my Sony was in the shop. The laptop had Wins 7. I did love the laptop while I used it and there was no problem keeping it cool while I worked. It was on my wooden desk that has a pull-out keyboard tray underneath. When I walked away from the laptop, I closed the lid, no problems. I'm glad I had my USB extension because like the all-in-one, I had too much to plug in for the number of available USBs. I continued to use my ergo keyboard with the laptop and I used a regular mouse instead of the one built in. I missed my large screen with the laptop.

I loved the flexibility of the laptop, though, and have decided that within this next year I will buy a reburbished laptop and install XP on it to use as a backup and also to help me stay mobile.

I think it's a toss up about which I like best, so it would be your personal preference about which one to chose. Go to a computer store, though, to see if you can price laptops with the operating system you want. My shop had several reburbished ones for between $240 and $270.

I have been working exclusively on a laptop since June, and there is no turning back now. I am too used to the flexibility with the laptop and being able to work from anywhere. My kids love the fact that now, mom can take them to the park, and I can still work on my files that do not require internet while still supervising and taking breaks to play with them, etc. We can visit friends, go on vacations, and I can still work. I never had that flexibility before.

The other key point for me was the mobility in that I have severe spinal arthritis, and have yet to find an office chair that is accommodating for that, and often will now work my my couch, as it is much more comfortable.

I work upwards of 12-14 hours a day some days, by choice, and the laptop is almost never shut off. I think I have shut it done maybe a handful of times since I got it in June, and have had no problems.

I got the laptop on a fluke. My computer crashed in the middle of my shift, and I needed something that day, but had almost no money to work with (less than a $50 bank balance). I called a rent to own place that I have had a business relationship with for over ten years, and they had me out the door that day with nothing out of pocket for the first two weeks. I asked for the cheapest computer they had, and that actually ended up being a brand new Toshiba Win 7 laptop, which was workable for my job as I am on EditScript. I was good to go.

thanks everyone for all the input - mt3

All-in-one Computer Versus Laptop For Transcription Opinions
Jan 07, 2012

I am curious which would be best for transcription, all-in-one or laptop with larger monitor.  It just seems to me that with an all-in-one you would have less mess on your desk than with a laptop hooked to a larger monitor (I'm ancient so I need a large monitor to be able to see), so I'm leaning towards buying an all-in-one computer rather than the laptop, but have not made my mind up completely yet.  Do any of my other transcription buddies have an opinion on one or the ...

End Point Versus Endpoint And Hand Grip Versus Handgrip
Mar 13, 2012

Two words that come up often for questioning.  These are strictly used in an orthopedic setting.  Stedman's and Dorland's list end point and hand grip HOWEVER the office transcription manager,  girl is asking for me to correct this to endpoint and handgrip. She is only basing this on what an old medical transcription company she used to work for had her typing. I would rather base it on the  medical reference. The doctors are not even aware this has come up. She is ...

Okay, I should have checked all this out before I bought a new computer, I know.  But I didn't and now I am paying for it. My company's software is not compatible with Windows 7 and that's what my new computer installed on it.  I have learned that I can take it to a local repair store and have the XP installed on it and the Word 2003, but then I found out from my employer's IT guy that a 64-bit computer is also not compatible.  Geesh!  Anything else I sho ...
