A Free While-You-Work Stress Buster - Athena

Posted: Jan 23, 2010

I've found a wonderful way to reduce stress while working long hours.  It reduces dramatically the times I've wanted to choke some of the bad dictators I seem to constantly get.  It's called ShoutCast and it's free internet radio.  You don't need to download anything if you have WinAmp on your PC.  It plays nonstop, no commercials, etc.  I keep the volume very low at 1 or 2 on the WinAmp player so it plays in the background through my headset and really has kept me calm, and I feel I'm more productive.  My favorite channel so far is under the genre of New Age under Meditation...it's the first choice, "Nirvana."  Just wanted to pass this along to anyone needing a "mental break."

Nice tip, thanks. The beautiful thing about working from home is that when I get frustrated with a dictator I can cuss out loud at them, they don't know it, my boss doesn't know it and that reduces my stress. LOL. At least I don't have to "bottle up steam" anymore. I also get annoyed with the dictators who feel they can't speak above a "whisper" when they dictate, it drives me nuts!

"cussing out loud and they don't know it" :) Have turned the air blue and cussed the paint right off the walls in my home office. Think my former next-door neighbors must have heard sometimes, but they were so freaking loud I figured, "back atcha". Years ago working in house, worried I might say something out loud with the headset on, forgetting that I wasn't at home. Had one close call; thought I was alone in the office and at the time was livid with another employee, and ready to let it fly. Kept my thoughts to myself, only to discover a short time later she was sitting quiet as a mouse in a corner. If I had yelled what I was really thinking, probably would have lost my job. Office settings wear me out, and it shows. Just can't feign interest in people's on-going dramas, which they are milking for the attention. Have no interest in on-the-job visibility; just want to earn my living and go on with the rest of my life. So being where I can dress comfortably, work productively and swear safely, is fine by me.

LOL. I understand about "office drama" too and I know what you mean. I used to work in a med-rec office in a hospital several years ago with 4 other women. It was small hospital and they had their own in-house transcriptionists. One lady, I really kind of felt bad for her sometimes because every time she would leave the room the others would talk about her. Our supervisor hated her and claimed she had caught her sleeping one day when she was supposed to be working. Tried to get her fired but it never happened. She had been there almost 25 years and Human Resources refused to let her go since she was close to retirement. Her son had been in jail for writing bad checks, jumped from one job to another and he and his wife bummed off of this lady and her husband plus she had lots of health issues. We also had to be careful what we said because sometimes the doctors would come into the office. Had one doc, total A-hole, who would get on to transcribe and make these snide little comments from time to time about the transcription and the med rec department in general. My super got so tired of it that she finally told us to just start typing "everything" he said into the report and she would take it to the CEO of the hospital. LOL. Anyway, more than you wanted to hear I know. I just remember those days and don't miss them either! :)

I hadn't been working at home long when I got really upset with a bad dictator and started ranting. My husband overheard me, and said, "Geez, no wonder they make you people work at home!" LOL

You took the words right out of my mouth! I also have been known to cuss or say something to the dictator (of course, my dogs think I am insane)and love the fact that I can't get in trouble for doing it!

No More Stress-woohoo
Jul 10, 2013

I quit my job due to health issues and my stress level has gone way down.  I worked for 8 years here and it was okay.  There were tough times, but it was mostly okay because my TSM/CCM left me alone but were accessible if needed.  They answered my emails and phone calls (even though there were about 5 or so different ones through the years).  It was just aggravating when good accounts would go to ASR.  But, I don't have to worry anymore.  Hope things get better ...

ESL & Poor Dictator Stress
Feb 01, 2013

No more microscopic QA dissection for me. My new plan is to shoot the job full of blanks and send it in - far less stressful for sure. Each and every time I hear something that I am not 100% sure of - they get a blank. This is not now nor was it ever MY personal problem. Today I'm quite tired of being penalized for someone else's inability to dictate clear enough to perfectly discern what was said. No more cleaning up sentences either. QA: Verbatim you want? Verbatim you get. ...

Finally Got Out, Stress Level GONE

I finally got to the point I hated time for work.  I went through 2 buyouts and it just seemed to get worse.  I have watched QA people busted down due to not getting enough lines per hour, which is impossible when there's not enough work, and when most of the acute care work was 100% listens.  I got ONE raise in 7 years yet the duties kept piling on and found out some were making 4.00 an hour more than me in lower positions. On days off you were expected to join meetings no m ...

After working for MQ for nearly 5-1/2 years, I'm finally leaving.  The first 5 years were great!  Then they decided to force QAs to do transcription and ASR.  If I wanted to transcribe I would have applied for an MT job.  Not to mention the fact that I was making close to $16 an hour and now this has been reduce to around $11 and sometimes under $8.  It's MQs loss.  It's too bad they don't treat their valuable employees better.  I just love ...

Judging from some of the recent posts below, there looks to be an exodus of sorts from MModal and MT in general. I have joined that group. I left MModal last month to pursue another at-home job NOT IN MT with flexible schedule, hourly pay, and pays substantially more than what I made at MModal. Don't know what took me so long to "take the plunge" away from MT. After many years of MT with 12 of those years being with Medquist/MModal and the last 7 on the same accounts, I already miss the wo ...
