Judging from some of the recent posts below, there looks to be an exodus of sorts from MModal and MT in general. I have joined that group.
I left MModal last month to pursue another at-home job NOT IN MT with flexible schedule, hourly pay, and pays substantially more than what I made at MModal. Don't know what took me so long to "take the plunge" away from MT. After many years of MT with 12 of those years being with Medquist/MModal and the last 7 on the same accounts, I already miss the work a lot and going through somewhat of a withdrawal phase, but at the same time relieved to be out of a dying profession, not having to stress over paying bills, and especially relieved to be out of the grip of MModal! Amazing transformation from the low self-esteem and feeling of hopelessness I had the last few years with MModal.
If I can break away and start a new career at my age (pushing 60), then there is certainly hope for all you MTs out there wondering if you can do it also.
Thank you all on this forum for the support, friendship, and great laughs you have given me over the years, and I will check back from time to time to keep up on what is happening in the MT world.
I loved being an MT, the sense of pride knowing I was doing a job that not everyone can do and doing it well. I miss the variety of acute care work and some of the dictators (even the bad ones I laughed at), but you will get over it and be able move on just fine. MModal certainly does not give anyone incentive to stay in this profession, and that alone helped me a lot getting motivated to train for something else. With pay going down to near minimum wage for some with no regard for the knowledge and experience it takes to do MT, it is just not worth the cost to yourself in self-esteem and sense of pride in your work.
If you find another line of work you are interested in, find out what you need to get that job and take classes if need be to gain the qualifications you need while still working at MT, that is what I did. I needed more knowledge on Microsoft Office programs, so I took classes at my local college.
