Why don't we just transcribe for free and get a charity deduction!!! LOL It just keeps getting worse and worse. So depressing.

I tell 'ya, I'm not a Pollyanna but I guess hope springs eternal. Holding on and hoping something is gonna give in this "profession". Unfortunately, I am starting to fully believe that the only thing that's gonna give is the bottom is going to fall completely out.
I used to do the "Hope Springs Eternal" thing, too. - (sm)- Meerkat

When I (stupidly) left a good-paying on site job for a remote MT position at a national, it was because I believed I could make more money on production. That turned out not to be the case, but I still kept telling myself "That's okay, because at least I can work at home in peace and quiet, and have flexible hours."
The peace and quiet was shattered when my company was sold the following year to one of the big nationals. Then it was constant phone calls, e-mails, and teleconferences telling me (and everyone else) what a lousy job we were doing. (Funny - at that time we still had our old accounts, which the original company thought we were doing a bang-up job on, and told us so often.) So I guess just having a different owner suddenly makes us bad transcriptionists.
One by one, the familiar original accounts were yanked, and sent to India. The user-friendly software was yanked, and we were saddled with clunky, complicated and ponderously slow new transcription software. Pay suffered.
In addition to all the other little things the big nationals do that eat away at our paychecks, one day they called a conference and told us "Guess what?! We're cutting all the MTs' pay by 3 cents a line!" When asked why they were doing this, they gave no reason. They said, "We just are."
Other things kept happening that were destroying me financially, but I had started believing what they were telling me every day - that I wasn't working "smart enough" or "fast enough", and that "everyone else in the company" was making money hand over fist now that they were on VR. Uh huh. Yeah, right. Sure they are, even though it paid half what our formerly slashed per-line rates paid for straight transcription.
Yet I kept believing that it must be me. I must be lazy, I must be not as experienced as I thought I was (with 30 years' experience? Yeah, right!) So every morning I would get up and log on with renewed hope:
"Today I'll type like the wind!" (Not possible when the program keeps freezing up on you.)
"Today I'll be ultra-focused!" (Hard to do when you're freaking out every time another bill comes in the mail that you know you can't pay.)
"Today I'll make sure I have 100% accuracy!" (It would be nice, but it's hard to do when you're just a mere human. And even if you do get 100% accuracy, there's no guarantee QA isn't going to come in and either "correct" non-existent "mistakes" in your work, and claim you did NOT hit 100%.)
"Today I'll get my highest line count ever!" (Lots of variables, there... you can end up with scratchy-sounding reports, ESL docs up the whazoo, or... the dreaded "NJA".)
During the holidays last year, when I finally had to resort to the help of siblings to keep me afloat and still in my tiny apartment, I came to the realization that I wasted several years thinking this job was going to get better, and when it didn't I wasted 2 or 3 MORE years thinking I could find another MT job somewhere else. But I couldn't. The realization set in especially as the number of non-MTSO jobs listed on the online want-ads dwindled from about one new one a week in my state, to sometimes nothing for an entire month.
So I'm on my way out of MT permanently. I'm currently only in it for the health insurance, which I'm going to try to use as much of as I can this year, because I foresee either the insurance, or possibly even the entire job altogether, disappearing before the end of the year.
Whatever. I'm so beyond caring anymore. When an email screams "All hands on deck!" when they get behind on TAT, it doesn't interest me at all. Sorry, but if I'm not getting overtime for the extra work, then nuh-uh. I've got better things to do. I do only as many lines and hours as absolutely necessary to keep the insurance, and use the rest of my time far more wisely: Job-hunting, school, and freelance work when I can get it. And I look forward to the day when I can finally close the door on my former MT career forever.

I hear you. Can you send me an e-mail as to which MTSO you are working for? Just curious.

I also felt like maybe it was me. Maybe they are right and I really do suck. Years and years experience notwithstanding. They made me doubt my skills and hate my profession.
I'm done with the MT game too - anon

Same here also. I gave myself the same pep talks, hoped for better like you, set the same goals. Until I realized that the what I wanted from this job was out of my control.
Finding this message board was a true turning point for me. I saw others dealing with the same MT game, and losing through no fault of their own.
I am now in my second semester at a community college, preparing for a new job field far away from anything remotely related to MT. I have stopped caring about the unreal demands from the company, their Catch-22s, their games.
The MTSOs are like the casinos in Vegas--the house always wins.
I'm done begging for jobs, done with having no life outside of this computer, done with being made to feel like a terrible worker. Done with being treated like a peon.
got that 6 cent a line job offer too - schnauzermom

Either she found someone or realized how insulting that pay was! LOL.
RE: Posting on the job seekers board.
....especially for something like psych where you can't make as many big normals like you would be able to do with other specialities. I would have liked to work some extra on some psych accounts, but that pay is just disgusting. ...
Are there any companies out there that pay at least 10 cents a line for transcription and 5-6 cents a line for VRE? This career is not what it used to be! ...
I've been offered 5 cents to QA, I used to QA hourly but I've come to realize hourly isn't offered much anymore. I'm getting carpal tunnel, which is quite painful, and I'd love to type less and still make money. Is this rate too low?? I'd also be independent contractor, but I don't mind IC. ...
Hello all.. this will be my first real job.. I've applied at several places, taken the tests, sent in resumes... and now I'm getting calls with job offers.
These people are company owners who sound very nice and legitimate, but what I'm being offered sounds pretty low. The first company says: 0.04 cents per line, and the second one says they pay 0.05 cents. The second company says they pay by the "byte" rather than by the line. You take the total number of bytes ...
There is a new job posting for 6 cents a line....this field of work is becoming more unappealing every day; to think I have given this field 37 years of my life including weekends and holidays, I have never taken such big step backwards. Barely making minimum wage these days. I remember the good old days..... ...
I've been working for a national company for over 5 years and all of my accounts have been transitioned to 100% SR work at 4.5 cents per line (a far cry from what I used to make). I'm now basically making minimum wage due to all the editing that needs to be done to these reports (and we've been on SR for over a year now). They keep making changes to improve SR but it's just getting worse and worse. From what I've read it sounds like 4.5 cents per line i ...
Just curious as I have never been paid by the line, how much does getting paid 7, 8, 9, 10 cents a line average out to be. I realize it all depends on how fast you are but say on average??? What do most companies pay? Thanks! ...
I'm wondering if 5 cents a line with 40% templates is a decent pay rate. This is all straight typing, no VR. Anybody else in this situation? I need to make a decision. Thanks for any info! ...
When I took the Career Step course not even 5 years ago, the industry supposedly was paying on average 6-9 cents a line. I worked in a hospital at an hourly wage for a few years and was recently laid off and am working at one of the online companies now - and I REALLY want to know what happened to the 6-9 cents a line I was told was industry standard FIVE years ago? I'm making 4 cents a line now -- how does an industry pay LESS 5 years later? ...
I have never heard of being paid by minute of dictation. What would you say is fair for an experienced MT doing acute care as an IC? Is 9 cents per minute low, or is it just me? Anyone have any input on this or experience with this type of pay plan? Thanks in advance. ...
Noticed in the MQ MT "rewards" plan (wow I can't even type that w/o laughing), that as of Feb 1 the pay will be a flat 4 cents per line for ASR. It does say this applies to new hires only; however, it says if hired prior to Feb 1 the editing rate will be "equal to the greater of 60% of the transcription base rate."
What does "equal to or greater of 60%" mean exactly? Does that just mean 60% of your regular straight transcription rate like it is now?&nbs ...
and 3 cents for VR? Unbelievable! That equates to about 5 cents and 2 cents per line respectively after taxes, and they require a second or third shift schedule. Are they serious? I guess some MTs are content to work for little more than minimum wage. Too bad! ...
so ive been offered a position at 6 cents a line for both straight and SR. these are new accounts and we have to train the VR so in a few months it should be 80-90% VR.
Thoughts? Opinions? ...
This is probably a dumb question, but please no snide remarks. If you do not have any constructive comments, please move on.
If you only do QA and are paid by cents per line (NOT hourly), how do you make any money or plan your day. Are you not dependent on how many reports other Medical Transcriptionists send to QA? So, if everyone is just spot on and only 1 or 2 reports make it to QA in an hour, how do you make any money?
I saw the ad on the Job Seeker& ...
She says the offer was "set in stone." This makes me believe that MQ is going to either try to cut everyone's ASR pay to 4 cents a line. They will either get rid of the ones somehow (nit pitting followed by QA pay cuts, making "tweaks" to DQS that are annoying and slow us down, causing up to want to quit, etc) or we will accept their new "set in stone" rate. They will sugar coat it by saying, "We are ONLY reducing your ASR pay not your regular transcription rate" and then ...
Hey, I thought the moderator "unposted" the jobs that were posted here if they paid less than 4 cents a line. I wonder whatever happened to that? It seems like I read that somewhere, anyhow.
At 3 cents a line, TTD is beginning to bump up against the states' minimum wages. The only way that I see that they will be able to get around that is by saying they will hire independent contractors only, and I don't think we are all so stupid as to take 3 ...
I have a question: I currently make 8 cents a line, but it is VBC. If I had a job that paid 7 cents normally, but paid for spaces and other things in the report would one be coming out ahead making at least 8 cents a line or may be even more when it is all figured out? Has anyone ever done this and actually making more $$$ by making the 7 cents a line instead of 8 cents? I used to have a job that paid 10 to 10.5 cents a line, but they sold out. I was just ...
Has anyone heard of a company called North American Transcription Company. They claim to have all US MT's but they only charge clients 6 cents per line. How is this possible? ...
