Question regarding human nature and changes - in healthcare

Posted: Jul 10, 2014

The only constant, when working in health care, is that things are going to change. A wise MT told me that years ago, and boy has she been right. I do see a wide variability in how people handle change. I've seen it in MT, and I've seen it in coding, with the transition to ICD10. It seems some people embrace the change, learn from it and become even more successful, while others decide it's too difficult, complain about it and become bitter.  I have several more years until I retire. As coders, can anyone give me advice in how to continue to work and grow in our field, and not to become a person who complains about outside circumstances and people, without taking responsibility for my own happiness?  Are there certain traits I can try to cultivate?

Avoid the mindset that you want to do only one thing until you retire, whether that be 3 decades or 3 years.

Instead, accept that there is a lot more to learn, refuse to stay satisfied with limited or entry-level jobs, and keep learning. Learn more than just for CEUs; consider college and/or free online courses like Saylor, Edix, and Coursera.

Don't keep taking the same tired, low-level material over and over, either ... move on! Go from a certificate to an associate's, then from the associates to a bachelor's, then to a master's. If you took A&P or intro to disease processes once, don't take it again thinking you will learn more ... move on! Take a better course or a more detailed course, or take something else! (I see coders thinking they are getting ready for ICD-10 by taking the same level of A&P again. If it wasn't enough aready, how is it going to improve things to take it again? Take something better, and make sure it includes the information you need first!)

Get meaningful credentials in what you do and in what you want to do.

Use recognized organizations' (AHIMA, HIMSS, AAPC, HCPro, etc.) websites to identify career paths and requirements. Join them, if applicable, and attend local meetings. Read the information on their websites at least monthly so that you understand where the industry is going and how you can go with it. AAPC and AHIMA have monthly journals and AHIMA, in particular, has a huge number of high-quality documents addressing industry trends and technology.

Looking outside of coding itself, AAPC trends seem to be toward office and clinic management. AHIMA focuses more on industry trends, which right now are toward clinical documentation improvement, information technology, data, informatics, privacy and security. Coding affects all of those areas and/or is affected by them, so there is a logical progression to follow career-wise.

A positive attitude, adaptability, inquisitiveness, and a focus on others outside yourself are all important.

Thank you - I have made some of

the mistakes you have mentioned, I think mainly from feeling insecure about my own ability. I think I'm finally coming to terms that this coding thing isn't for someone who just wants to maintain the status quo. Education is going to be something I do for the rest of my life.

Yes, and it is a wonderful thing to have a job - where you can keep learning!

Nature Of The Beast - MTSOs
Oct 22, 2012

Fellow MTs - Would appreciate any and all feedback. I am in need of gathering information on the trends of the medical transcription profession. If you have worked as a hospital-employed MT as well as for an MTSO (medical transcription service organization, or MT outsourcing company), these are examples of the type of input I am requesting: 1) How would you characterize differences in pay rates, benefits, and potential gross income between hospital vs. MTSO employment? 2) Ha ...

there is no way in *&*&@@ that anyone can get 99% accuracy anywhere at any job.  we are only human.  This is all in attempt to get people to sloow down but don't slow down enough or else you drop your pto pay rate, you drop your line count per hour and all their other no good ideas they have up their goldlined sleeves.  They want everyone making a certain amount in their paychecks and work four times as hard now to keep what your making if that is possible. ...

Human Relations

I've been on the same ride for well over a decade.  I started with a small company that got swallowed up by a bigger fish, which got swallowed up by an even bigger fish, which got swallowed up again by a whale.  I'm a loyal person and a very good employee, as well as an excellent MT.  I've been tossed from team to team.  I'm sure I haven't had the same account or supervisor for more than 2 years in all that time, but, really, I'm flexible.& ...

Dear Human Resources...and I Know You Monitor This Site...

What can you do about the morale of the employees?  Instead of having MTs on their own time look at Enrich, why doesn't the company have monthly PAID meetings that cover topics or Q and A sessions, etc.?  I have never had a meeting with my supervisor. You cannot tell me there is no money for that. Nuance spends so much money "improving" Fiesa and why not use that money for their employees? HR looks at everything that is posted on this site and what is done with the information fou ...

Got A Critical Error For "omitting Dictation Of A Critical Nature."
Jan 04, 2010

The dictator said "... will get cardiac enzymes and will get a carotid Doppler in the morning...", or something similar, I have deleted the report.  I left out the second will.  This is not a verbatim account.  Critical error for omitted dictation pertains to lab results, normal values, etc.  I didn't think the word will meets that criteria.  I also had Tylenol No. 3 changed to Tylenol #3.  The drug lists still show it as No. 3.  ...
