Decisions, decisions, decisions...Andrews or Career Step - No Name

Posted: Nov 13, 2010

I have posted this a week or two ago......  No matter how many courses I review online... I keep coming back to these two.  For me, financially, I would have same deposit and same monthly payments... however with Career Step my monthly payments would be for 12 months, whereas Andrews it would be for 2 years.

I keep hearing that Andrews is the best and I know it is personal opinion, but what am I to go by.  They seem to offer the same course syllabus.  How can I really figure out which one is better suited for me.  I will admit, I do like the Andrews website a lot better.  Straightforward, right to the point.  Maybe that is how the training would be.  That is good... not stuffed with a lot of "filler."  Plus with Andrews you don't have strict timeframe to complete the course, which is good because I have three kids and work as an MT.

Actually.. its good to talk on here because the more I write this, the more I see that Andrews is really my #1 pick.  Now I just need to decide if it is worth the extra one year of payments (which are only 117 a month)... however as an MT, I dont have an extra 117 a month.. lol...

Now Im rambling.. its late 1:30 a.m.... cannot sleep because Im stressed over my dying profession and my lack of income.  Goodnight everyone!

Andrews - Time frame

I just want to point out that you are required to submit a certain amount of assignments and tests each week. It is quite structured and not as you have time.

Andrews - PaperMT

I just finished the MT course at Andrews and can't recommend it highly enough. It is straightforward and to the point. As I've been testing at different companies, I've found I've gotten very good training.

OK - But

That is the MT course. Different animal.

Straightforward and to the point - Yes

They have an expected timeframe. If they didn't a lot of students would never finish. They want you to finish. One thing most schools don't tell you is that a lot of students never finish, and most schools don't care.

You should be able to complete a lesson a week on average even if you work full time. You're an MT, so a lot will be review. You'll be expected to schedule and plan ahead, but they'll help with it. You'll see that you'll go faster as you move along, maybe doubling up on sections per week. It's just slower at the beginning.

At least you don't have to sit in front of a computer to study. There is little or nothing to print off. They use the same books you'll use as a working coder, so you can study anywhere. I would hate to type all day and then have to keep sitting there to plow through online lessons. Gah!

Straightforward - And

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a lot of typing out of assessments, let̢۪s be honest. You will typing out the answer to questions from scratch, typing out objective essay-type answers in your own words, weekly progress reports, and words and definitions from a glossary. I personally don̢۪t see that as easier than working online or online lessons. As a transcriptionist, you get used to streamlining things, so going from that to a working from scratch feels like going backwards. There is actually a LOT of typing. Sometimes having an online lesson feels more convenient. Just sayin...

The L S (Lynn Schoeler) Coding and Education has an online format SM - No Name

She has samples up to view the class. It is basically her taping a class that she does with real students etc... and we just follow along. She seems really good. Does anyone know of this course? Is it reputable?

Maybe you should discuss that with them. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Did you discuss that with them? I think they adapt to suit the student, so if you haven't talked to them about it maybe you should, especially if you're interpreting that there is a huge amount of typing required.
Curious about this - Adapts

Who/what program adapts to the student? I like the sound of that. How do you know? Thanks.

I am wondering if you all could give me some thoughts on the following:  I am trying to decided whether to take the AHIMA Basic Coding course or to just study on my own to take the CCS exam.  I am an acute care medical transcriptionist of 20 years.  There are a couple of classes that are required in the AHIMA course such as medical terminology that would be a waste of money for me to take, however, they are required.  Would I be better off just buying the books and studying o ...

Decisions
Oct 21, 2011

I am looking for some advice on anyone who has been in this situation:) I have been working at home for a small local company subcontracting at the rate of 0.05 and 0.06/line. This is my first MT job, so I am feeling sort of "afraid" to move on. I feel I need to move on because I have been informed the pay will not go up, no matter how long I am there. March 2012 will be my 2 year experience mark. Problem is, I don't feel I get the QA and training that I need to move on and question my ...

Decisions Of Hospital Beancounters
Jan 27, 2012

My friend is a long-term x-ray tech at a local hospital. The hospital beancounters have announced sweeping new changes: * Before, techs on call were paid for the time that they were on call.  Not anymore... From now on, the techs will NOT be paid for the time that they are on call but will ONLY be paid for the time they are on the clock in the hospital. !! * Only *1* x-ray tech (my friend) will be working the night shift.  That's right -- ONE x-ray tech covers the entire hospit ...

Career Step Or Andrews??? SM
Nov 05, 2010

I am very interested in a coding career.  I have been doing medical transcription for the past 10 years and am tired of chasing after the money.  I need stability.  Coding has always seemed like a very interesting job.  I want to choose a course that is the most detailed so that I have the best chance of passing the certification test(s) and be able to land a job.  Can anyone advise on a great online medical coding course?  Thanks guys!!!! ...

Andrews VS Career Step
Jan 26, 2011

Hi everyone, I have been looking at both Andrews and Career Steps programs for coding. I am leaning more towards Andrews, but I am worried about the amount of writing assignments you have to do. Are these long assignments? What type of stuff do you have to write about for a coding course (without giving away too much info)? Career Step is completely online, and for some reason that just does not seem like the best way to go. I feel that you really do need hands on kind of work, and I don' ...

Career Step Vs Andrews
Jan 16, 2012

Okay, I know Andrews is the best, but has anyone taken Career Step and had any sucess?  It is an approved school on the AHIMA web site, but I don't ever hear anyone say anything about going through them for coding.  If anyone has, I would like to know if you were able to pass the CCS after completing the course?  My parents want to help me pay for school, and I hate for them to think I went and found the most expensive one out there; although, I know it is the best.  I just wondered abo ...

Andrews Vs Career Step Sm
Apr 20, 2013

I am trying to decide between Andrews and Career Step for billing and coding.  The only question I have left is how the learning is done.  It looks like Career Step is study on your own. at your own pace.  I can't find anything one way or the other on the Andrews site - are there interactive online classes or is it study on your own and then test?  Also, Career Step says the tuition includes Complete set of industry codebooks (ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS).  Andrews ju ...

Career Step Or Andrews?
Apr 17, 2015

Can anyone tell me the difference in the 2 programs? Will someone come out of CS ready to sit for the CCS/CPC? I know/hear on here that Andrews has the best, most comprehensive program but Career Step has a job placement program after graduation ...granted it is low-paying, but it is more like an internship for 13 weeks. After that you can get hired for $15-$17/hour or more.... However their program is almost half what Andrews is.... I just am trying to make the best decision for myself. I am re ...

Career Step MT And MTE
Sep 13, 2010

Hi, I haven't enrolled yet, but I've pretty much decided on Career Step (mostly because of price!). I was wondering if anyone has any input as to whether it's better to take the MT course or the MTE course. Do you need the extra editing experience? I'm sure any extra is helpful, but is it necessary to have the editing training to get an MT job with an online company? Thanks in advance for any info! ...

Another Step Closer To Andrews Today!
Apr 28, 2012

I've been socking away a little bit here and there for a while now and I am getting so close to having the tuition. It's amazing how the little changes can add up to so much savings. The first thing I gave up about a year ago was buying an iced coffee every day, which I figured out at about $15/week x 52 weeks was equal to $780! I had a yard sale and got rid of things I obviously didn't want or need. I just finished rolling some more coins and I can't believe how much that ...

Re: Career Step Final
Feb 03, 2010

I was curious to hear if anybody failed the second part of the final? I got a 13% on the second part only because I was having serious trouble hearing the doctor clearly. I took that final last June, and I am wanting to take the final again in May. I am worried that I am going to come across the same problem even after practicing for so many months and getting helpful tips from the Career Step final. I am currently working part-time typing overflow reports and I am doing rather well with that. S ...

Disappointed In Career Step
May 29, 2010

I'm very disappointed regarding this medical editing course being offered by Career Step.  In my opinion it's a terrible way to take advantage of newbies who are worried about the job market and willing to pay anything to upgrade their skills, when every employer I've ever heard of trains their MTs on VR.  I can't imagine an employer requesting a course in medical editing in addition to the standard MT course.  I myself am a Career Step grad, have been gai ...

Career Step And Unemployment
Jun 09, 2010

Do you know if it is possible to take career step courses for coding and still collect unemployment. I do not qualify for the displaced worker program and they will not let me keep my benifits if I chose to go to a regular community college. I have no idea how the reporting is done, but I would really like to get into coding (currently an MT). I have enough in savings to pay for the course, and I am pretty sure I could get it over with fairly quicly, but I don't want to push myself to work ...

Purchasing A Used Career Step Course
Jul 25, 2011

I don't know how it will work as far as "enrollment" actually goes, but I'm really looking to do more of a self-taught kind of thing anyway. I know that access to instructors is important, and I have already arranged for that through my local college. Worst case scenario, I'm out $25.. but for that price, I couldn't pass it up!! Thoughts? ...

Career Step Vs SUM Program?
Aug 25, 2011

I'm currently enrolled @ Career Step and stumbled across this forum tonight.  This is the first time I've heard about this SUM program.  Should I be nervous that Career Step doesn't use this program?  I admit, I did not have the money for Andrews or M-tec and thought the AHDI certification was the important thing.  Now I'm not so sure.  Will I be passed over by recruiting agents without this knowledge? Thanks   ...

Andrew's Vs. Career Step

Career Step Textbooks?
May 04, 2013

I have narrowed my choices down to Career Step or Andrews for coding.  I know that Andrews provides all the necessary textbooks, but I cannot get a clear answer as to which textbooks actually are included with the Career Step program. Are there any current or former students of the Career Step coding program who would be willing to tell me which textbooks they received? Thanks much!       ...

Career Step Problems
Jan 30, 2015

I have to be honest. I truly felt that Career Step's training was thorough and prepared me well for a career as an MT. I had an extensive background in terminology, but the transcribing was new for me. Nonetheless, I completed all transcription modules with over 98% accuracy. I can type over 100 WPM. So, when it came time to take the final, I felt confident. I mean, I passed the multiple choice questions with flying colors and only got one wrong. But, apparently, I did so poorly on the tr ...
