Career Step vs Andrews - blondie

Posted: Jan 16, 2012

Okay, I know Andrews is the best, but has anyone taken Career Step and had any sucess?  It is an approved school on the AHIMA web site, but I don't ever hear anyone say anything about going through them for coding.  If anyone has, I would like to know if you were able to pass the CCS after completing the course?  My parents want to help me pay for school, and I hate for them to think I went and found the most expensive one out there; although, I know it is the best.  I just wondered about Career Step.  I certainly do not want to waste my time taking something and not get any benefit from it.  I thought I would do some research on here.

When I was there for MT - CS MT Grad

[ In Reply To ..]
When I was there for MT the coding boards were very quiet. I did not see a lot of (any) of the success stories I see with Andrews. After finishing there for my MT I had wished I had gone to Andrews for transcription so when it came to choosing a coding course I went with Andrews. While I was at CS there was not one coding grad who passed the CCS, but there were a couple that did pass the CPC.

That is great your parents will help you pay for school and I wish you the best of luck! Even though Andrews is a bit more expensive I truly cannot get over the quality or support you will receive there.

If I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

I did the coding program and needed more study/work experience before I felt ready for the CPC exam. I had difficulty with the on line class structure at CS and had trouble gaining access to an instructor when I needed help. I have no experience with Andrews, except that I know they get good reviews from former students who post on this board, I think they're definitely worth looking into. Are you the same Blondie who works for Transcend and posts on the MT board?

Andrews is NOT the most expensive - Coder

If you had a choice of 2 brownie mixes in the same size box, how would you choose?
Box A is 2.00.
Box B is 1.75.

Are you the kind of shopper who sees the same size boxes and grabs Box B because "it's cheaper"? Or do you look at the label to determine if the contents are the same?

Box A makes 20 brownies. Box B makes 10. Which costs more per brownie?

A costs .10 each, while B costs MORE at .175.

Some people will buy B because they do not know how to read the fine print. Or maybe the calculation is not very easy because the B box does not use the same language as A. Maybe B says it makes "a whole batch" instead of telling you their idea of a batch is only 10 brownies.

What if A includes lots of chocolate chunks, pecans and walnuts. Consumer reports noted it had the best taste. B has no chocolate chunks but includes artificially flavored walnut-like processed pellets. Ugh. CR noted it tasted stale and still includes trans-fats.

Some people will still buy B because "it is cheaper." They may say it is chocolatey enough and that the pellets are good enough.
It is for their kids, after all. Besides, they do not believe in trans fats. That is just people causing trouble.

Another type of person thinks this is such a bargain that she picks out the pellets, and then doctors up the mix with a couple of chocolate bars, a cup of chopped pecans, a cup of chopped walnuts, a teaspoon of real vanilla, two eggs, some real butter, and some minimarshmallows and then drizzles a cup of melted caramels over the top. She then remarks that those people who pointed out that B cost more were wrong, because her doctored-up mix made 20 brownies. She does not include the cost of the extras because she had them in the kitchen anyway, nor does she factor in the cost of chopping the nuts and melting caramel because saving that 25 cents was WORTH IT!

Sadly, Ms. B's kids won't eat these because of that nasty trans-fat taste.

Andrews is not the most expensive. Do the math. Everthing is included in their box, a chef is standing by to answer your questions, you get a bunch of excellent cookbooks, you do not need additives or chopping and melting, and everyone wants to eat your brownies. Twice as many.

Some schools cost 30K. Some colleges sound cheap until you total fees, test proctoring, a new computer and software, and 200 or more in books per class.

Please do a cost comparison.

You brought up test proctoring costs - sm

I heard recently about a course, I can't remember the name of it, that requires that you pay for a test proctor, which is required for all tests. Other costs were added on as extras and the costs keep coming. A good question to ask when you are enrolling somewhere is about extras. Are there any? What are they?

Test proctoring was free at local public library - 2cents

Proctoring fees - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Sometimes you can find free proctoring, but I was talking about college programs that require proctoring done by another college. They have an affiliated group of them.

Depending on where you live, you may have to drive up to 50 or more miles, and you may have to pay.

Only one college in my area did this. I did not have to drive far, but I paid 20 per test. Each course had an average of 3 tests and a final. They required stting an appointment a week in advance and would only allow you to test during certain hours, like 2 to 4. I thus had to take off from work for every one, making scheduling a nightmare.

If you enroll in a community college program, that great tuition is fine, but a 10-course program might cost an additional 800 in proctoring, 2000 in books, and several hundred in library, technology, and other fees, not to mention lost work time.

If you are shopping around, check these things carefully. Once you are enrolled, it is too late to find out.

Accelerated programs are not a bargain if you cannot pass a certification test or if you know only enough for basic work. The knowledge most MTs have is not enough now for inpatient coding and definitely will not be enough for ICD 10.

A faster or shorter program may just not contain as much. Also, as someone here discovered, taking an outpatient course might screw up your long term plan, since it is nrarly impossible to find inpatient courses.
Good point. It's similar to - sm

That's similar to someone enrolling in a really cheap, fast MT course, thinking they will supplement it later. You get the cheap. You get the fast. You don't get the later.

Career Step Or Andrews??? SM

I am very interested in a coding career.  I have been doing medical transcription for the past 10 years and am tired of chasing after the money.  I need stability.  Coding has always seemed like a very interesting job.  I want to choose a course that is the most detailed so that I have the best chance of passing the certification test(s) and be able to land a job.  Can anyone advise on a great online medical coding course?  Thanks guys!!!! ...

Andrews VS Career Step
Jan 26, 2011

Hi everyone, I have been looking at both Andrews and Career Steps programs for coding. I am leaning more towards Andrews, but I am worried about the amount of writing assignments you have to do. Are these long assignments? What type of stuff do you have to write about for a coding course (without giving away too much info)? Career Step is completely online, and for some reason that just does not seem like the best way to go. I feel that you really do need hands on kind of work, and I don' ...

Andrews Vs Career Step Sm
Apr 20, 2013

I am trying to decide between Andrews and Career Step for billing and coding.  The only question I have left is how the learning is done.  It looks like Career Step is study on your own. at your own pace.  I can't find anything one way or the other on the Andrews site - are there interactive online classes or is it study on your own and then test?  Also, Career Step says the tuition includes Complete set of industry codebooks (ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS).  Andrews ju ...

Career Step Or Andrews?
Apr 17, 2015

Can anyone tell me the difference in the 2 programs? Will someone come out of CS ready to sit for the CCS/CPC? I know/hear on here that Andrews has the best, most comprehensive program but Career Step has a job placement program after graduation ...granted it is low-paying, but it is more like an internship for 13 weeks. After that you can get hired for $15-$17/hour or more.... However their program is almost half what Andrews is.... I just am trying to make the best decision for myself. I am re ...

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...Andrews Or Career Step
Nov 13, 2010

I have posted this a week or two ago......  No matter how many courses I review online... I keep coming back to these two.  For me, financially, I would have same deposit and same monthly payments... however with Career Step my monthly payments would be for 12 months, whereas Andrews it would be for 2 years.  I keep hearing that Andrews is the best and I know it is personal opinion, but what am I to go by.  They seem to offer the same course syllabus.  How can I really ...

Career Step MT And MTE
Sep 13, 2010

Hi, I haven't enrolled yet, but I've pretty much decided on Career Step (mostly because of price!). I was wondering if anyone has any input as to whether it's better to take the MT course or the MTE course. Do you need the extra editing experience? I'm sure any extra is helpful, but is it necessary to have the editing training to get an MT job with an online company? Thanks in advance for any info! ...

Another Step Closer To Andrews Today!
Apr 28, 2012

I've been socking away a little bit here and there for a while now and I am getting so close to having the tuition. It's amazing how the little changes can add up to so much savings. The first thing I gave up about a year ago was buying an iced coffee every day, which I figured out at about $15/week x 52 weeks was equal to $780! I had a yard sale and got rid of things I obviously didn't want or need. I just finished rolling some more coins and I can't believe how much that ...

I was curious to hear if anybody failed the second part of the final? I got a 13% on the second part only because I was having serious trouble hearing the doctor clearly. I took that final last June, and I am wanting to take the final again in May. I am worried that I am going to come across the same problem even after practicing for so many months and getting helpful tips from the Career Step final. I am currently working part-time typing overflow reports and I am doing rather well with that. S ...

Disappointed In Career Step
May 29, 2010

I'm very disappointed regarding this medical editing course being offered by Career Step.  In my opinion it's a terrible way to take advantage of newbies who are worried about the job market and willing to pay anything to upgrade their skills, when every employer I've ever heard of trains their MTs on VR.  I can't imagine an employer requesting a course in medical editing in addition to the standard MT course.  I myself am a Career Step grad, have been gai ...

Career Step And Unemployment
Jun 09, 2010

Do you know if it is possible to take career step courses for coding and still collect unemployment. I do not qualify for the displaced worker program and they will not let me keep my benifits if I chose to go to a regular community college. I have no idea how the reporting is done, but I would really like to get into coding (currently an MT). I have enough in savings to pay for the course, and I am pretty sure I could get it over with fairly quicly, but I don't want to push myself to work ...

Career Step Vs SUM Program?

I'm currently enrolled @ Career Step and stumbled across this forum tonight.  This is the first time I've heard about this SUM program.  Should I be nervous that Career Step doesn't use this program?  I admit, I did not have the money for Andrews or M-tec and thought the AHDI certification was the important thing.  Now I'm not so sure.  Will I be passed over by recruiting agents without this knowledge? Career Step Problems
Jan 30, 2015

I have to be honest. I truly felt that Career Step's training was thorough and prepared me well for a career as an MT. I had an extensive background in terminology, but the transcribing was new for me. Nonetheless, I completed all transcription modules with over 98% accuracy. I can type over 100 WPM. So, when it came time to take the final, I felt confident. I mean, I passed the multiple choice questions with flying colors and only got one wrong. But, apparently, I did so poorly on the tr ...

Where to start? I was the top MT at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs Regional in Waco, TX. I have also been a proofreader for a top notch advertising agency in California and my first job was as an MT.
