I am looking for some advice on anyone who has been in this situation:) I have been working at home for a small local company subcontracting at the rate of 0.05 and 0.06/line. This is my first MT job, so I am feeling sort of "afraid" to move on. I feel I need to move on because I have been informed the pay will not go up, no matter how long I am there. March 2012 will be my 2 year experience mark. Problem is, I don't feel I get the QA and training that I need to move on and question myself at other jobs such as what they are looking for. I am getting no feedback such as bad work, mistakes, etc. My employer says I am doing a excellent job. Of course, because I don't think he/she wants me to move on since I don't think many people will accept such a rate for straight typing. MT jobs in my area are like looking for a needle in a haystack. I feel like I have been trained for one work type. (Clinic follow-ups and new patient visits) Bottom line is I know I need to move on, but question finding another job in this field. I truely love what I do and really feel like I want to be a MT for a long time coming. Anyone else feel this way? Any one been in this situation? How did it turn out? My training consists of a local community college. I feel the instructer was not helpful, and I figured it was learn by hands on. Now, I just find myself with time going on and afraid to make a move. Thanks for responding and listening.

Well, $0.05-$0.06/cpl is low for straight typing. You might try some of the companies that have an mttest as their form of testing. It would give you some idea of what companies are looking for. Did you read your post before submission? Not trying to be b*t(hy but you have quite a few spelling errors that are simple words, which makes me wonder if your actual work is like this, as well? (an excellent, truly, instructor). I know message boards/texts/social communities are notorious for "slacking" on spelling and grammar, so maybe that is it? At any rate, I would check out a couple of the mttest sites, give yourself an idea on where you might need some improvement. Good luck.
Why is it that when someone comes to this board - asking questions, there is

always someone there to QA their post? This is not a testing site. We shouldn't have to proof our work here. It does not help people to put them down. While grammar is very important, there are other things that are very important too, such as being able to follow general rules such as company rules, account specs. I always wonder if the people who do this are capable of following these kinds of rules if they are not capable of following posting guidelines.

When someone comes to a board talking about not getting any QA back from their current employer and yet they have several "easy" mistakes in their post and are asking for advice on a seeking a new job, maybe they would like the feedback they are obviously NOT getting on their job. I just wonder why there are people who patrol posts and complain about people "QA"ing other people. You contributed NOTHING positive to the post. I did mention the mistakes in her post and I also gave her advice on what to do as far as testing. But I guess some people can't stand for attention to go anywhere but themselves and will post whatever they have to (even pointless posts) to get that attention so congratulations, you succeeded, everyone is looking at you now!
Well - anon

You won't know unless you test! So get out there and start applying at different compaines and see what falls out. If you're offered a job elsewhere, you do have the ability to say "No" if you feel it's not for you.
I wouldn't leave your current position though until you have additional employment (I don't think you would do this, but it vaguely sounded like it in your message)
Good luck!

No, I would not leave unless I had a sure back up plan to go on. I did apply for a in-house position and got it. Problem was, the pay was auctually less than what I make now once you consider gas, childcare, etc. That would have gotten me more experience, but I turned it down. As for the first message I posted. No, I did not proofread my post for errors. My work is good because I send my work directly to the physican. Not once, have I heard her complain. I do think testing for additional work will give me a upper hand. Thanks for the responses. As always, I use advice as tools to learn.

This is probably an oversight on your part and I know we are not supposed to correct or criticize, but since you are talking about wanting to test somewhere else, I just wanted to point out, because I noticed it three times throughout your posts, but you say a excellent, a upper hand. Just in case you don't know, it is "an" in front of a word that starts with a vowel. If you miss that on tests, you will not pass. It should be an excellent....or an upper hand. Good luck to you on whatever you decide!!
moving on... - been there...

I know I am going to get bashed and called a suit, whatever. This is just purely my advice and my experience. You can take it or leave it. I have worked for Nuance for over 3 years now, my TL is FANTASTIC. I wish I could post her name and give her credit. As a matter of fact no TL that I have had dealings with are rude or disappear when you need them. They answer promptly. They are very quick to give you extra accounts, allow for time off for appts. I have never had a late paycheck. I know they ship some accts overseas, but some accts just will not agree to that so they stay here. Nuance I believe is only looking for 1 year of experience. Pay is very standard in this field (and not 6 cents). Their benefits are a bit expensive, and they do have slow times at cetain times of the year, as does the entire field. You hear a lot of bashing on here, but as you're new, I thought would be a good chance to tell you that even in the big MTSOs there are good people and good companies. Try there and see what happens - what do you have to lose?
I would actually agree with you. I started out - with Focus with very

little experience, and while I didn't stay that long, it was great experience. Every company has their issues. You never know until you try. I think with the bigger companies it all depends on what TL you get and which accounts.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...Andrews Or Career Step Nov 13, 2010I have posted this a week or two ago...... No matter how many courses I review online... I keep coming back to these two. For me, financially, I would have same deposit and same monthly payments... however with Career Step my monthly payments would be for 12 months, whereas Andrews it would be for 2 years.
I keep hearing that Andrews is the best and I know it is personal opinion, but what am I to go by. They seem to offer the same course syllabus. How can I really ...
Decisions, Decisions, Decisions Jan 13, 2011I am wondering if you all could give me some thoughts on the following: I am trying to decided whether to take the AHIMA Basic Coding course or to just study on my own to take the CCS exam. I am an acute care medical transcriptionist of 20 years. There are a couple of classes that are required in the AHIMA course such as medical terminology that would be a waste of money for me to take, however, they are required. Would I be better off just buying the books and studying o ...
Decisions Of Hospital Beancounters Jan 27, 2012My friend is a long-term x-ray tech at a local hospital.
The hospital beancounters have announced sweeping new changes:
* Before, techs on call were paid for the time that they were on call. Not anymore... From now on, the techs will NOT be paid for the time that they are on call but will ONLY be paid for the time they are on the clock in the hospital. !!
* Only *1* x-ray tech (my friend) will be working the night shift. That's right -- ONE x-ray tech covers the entire hospit ...
