AHIMA or Andrews? Arent these two schools both EQUAL? - Answers

Posted: May 16, 2010

I would think the AHIMA would be a great place to take the medical coding classes.  They are the ones giving the certification examination and certification.

I dont hear many people enrolled in AHIMA Cluster Program for Medical Coding.

I wonder why?

seems so many people go off this board and then follow along.

AHIMA was actually my first choice but I needed the prerequisite Anatomy and Physiology class, that was $250, the other programs include it in their curriculum. You have to purchase your books separately. Again, the other programs include some or all of the books. They do offer one certification exam but there are others. Training through other programs enables you to sit for any exam of your choice.

so what program are you currently enrolled in? - thanks in advance

so with the anatomy class and purchasing the books, it ends up costing as much as Andrews anyway? - right?

I am unsure of the cost. However - see message - Anonymous

In the AHIMA program, you also need to find someone to proctor your exams at the end of every module which means having someone sit with you and time you while you are taking the test. For me when considered all of that, it really was a matter of convenience. It's a great program for those who can make it work.
can it be a relative who sits with you as a proctor? - i didnt know that!

It can be a relative, friend, teacher, co-worker, manager, whomever you choose as long as they follow the testing guidelines.
so i take it, you didnt go with AHIMA? - thanks again

did you go with ANDREWS?
Why the animosity towards - Andrews?

No, family cannot proctor - sm

Sorry, family members and relatives cannot proctor.  Read the website.

Structure: 3-course modules x 15 weeks each.  If you do not finish or fail an exam, you have to pay to take the course over.   Proctored tests, so you can plan on having to finish well in advance to accommodate your proctor.  Tests can be taken only once.

Length: 15 months IF you take 3 courses at once throughout, longer if you do not.  Add 3 months if you have to take A&P first.

Cost (including A&P, not including optional books):

35 membership fee + 2225 if you pay for entire course up front + 890.35 books = 3150

35 membership fee + 2425 if you pay per module + 890.35 books = 3350

35 membership fee + 2925 if you pay per course + 890.35 books = 3850

Repeated courses:  225 each

For pointing that out, I went back and read it again, no relatives allowed as exam proctors.

Is Andrews Approved By AHIMA?
Sep 21, 2010

It seems like a lot of people on this board have gone or are going to Andrews for coding.  I have seen a lot of jobs for coders where you obviously need to be certified but also have done your education through an AHIMA approved program.  Isn't Andrews NOT approved through AHIMA?  Wouldn't it be better for me to just do my training through AHIMA?  Seems like a lot of money to spend on a program that isn't recognized by AHIMA. ...

Can Someone Compare Andrews To AHIMA Basic Coding Course?
Feb 07, 2013

they call this a 12-course basics.  it says 2000, plus you need an additional 290 +225 for the required anatomy and physiology course, which you must at least get a C before you can proceed with the coding.  they also suggest 35 a year for becoming a member.  books are also a lot extra, looks like.   says 4 clusters of 15-week courses, that is 60 weeks, yes?   anyone have experience with this course?  call me gun-shy, but this is the organization who threw MT unde ...

Coding Schools - Andrews
Jul 14, 2011

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard  and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. Based on the excellent training I received at Andrews, I am beginning to go through the coding course. The ...

AHIMA Student

Hi all of you wannabe coders out there.  I have just finished my A&P course with AHIMA and am starting coding basics.  I would love to communicate those out there who are in this program, just starting out or previous students.  Let me know how far along you are and also what your background is.   I am very excited about getting to do this program.  I have been a transcriptionist for almost 20 years and am totally burned out, both physically and mentally.  ...

AHIMA (CCS) Versus AAPC (CPC) Which Is Better?
May 09, 2010

There is a lengthy debate as to which of two certifications CCS or CPC are good choices and which will yield better result. The AAPC webiste states that the CPC is a physician/provider-based coding cert. Hospitals are usually looking for facility-based coding certifications, as those credentials apply to their line of business & clinical setting.Hospital certified coders generally code in the hospital (e.g., CPC-H, CCS) and physician certified coders (e.g., CPC, CCS-P) usually code in provid ...

When To Joint AHIMA And AAPC?
Jun 28, 2012

I am currently in Andrews and wonder when would be a good time to join these organizations? I checked out AHIMA and their student designation is only for approved schools, and since Andrews is not, I would have to pay the full price of $165 before taking the CCS exam. The exam itself costs 299 for members and 399 for nonmembers. For AAPC, their student membership costs 70 and does not seem to be tied to "approved schools." I'm just a low-paid MT and wondering if I should spring for thes ...
