Questions to ask MT Service--being outsourced... - dinosaur

Our transcription department was informed yesterday that we are going to be laid off and our work outsourced to 1 of 2 companies vying for the contract. Of course, as in most cases, we transcriptionists have been given the option to apply to work for the company who is given the contract. I'm wondering if any of you gals here might have suggestions as to what kinds of questions to ask the "recruiters" of these companies besides the obvious, i.e., pay per line, benefits, shift differential, weekend work, etc. Any ideas or suggestions welcome. ask if they will be doing VR as that might possibly cut the line rate in half and you would like to know up front rather than later, if they are truthful. You will definitely need to know what setup you will need as far as the computer, i.e. software, internet based service or directly from the place you are working now. Mine when outsourced was directly from hospital and had to get 2 more telephone lines, 1 for incoming and 1 for outgoing, now work for service and use the internet only. You might have some added costs with the home setup if you are now using company computer- you can ask their's or yours. I have been outsourced twice in the past. The first time did not go with the company offered because straight forward asking, they would not tell me any kind of salary, not monthly, not weekly, not by the day or hour and so I set out to find another hospital to work at. The second time outsourced was different and knew up front the salary so went with them. Good luck with the new place.

You can email me if you prefer not to list publically. Unfortunately, I have worked for 12 different companies since being laid off at the hospital I was at for 22 years. 12 companies in 4 years, finally finding a good one about 18 months ago. I can give you pros and cons of a lot of them, objective not nasty.

being as you have been there that long, surely you are vested and in a few years when you are able to retire, could take early at 62 if wanted to or wait until 66 for full or 67 now according to what year you were born, you have amassed probably a lot in social security which is a good thing while working at the hospital. I would think you were an employee there with benefits and the like. Even though outsourced, you are going in a later year when things should be in better order for you.

I was outsourced to Transcend and it was awful. The hospital at least gave us lots of notice so we could prepare. They offered us .10 cpl if we went right away, but many of us did not as we would lose severance pay and several months of benefits. Afterwards we were offered .08 cpl. They also do a lot of VR at 60% of straight typing. The benefits were okay but twice as much as were were paying. Also only 10 days off a year for 5 years, including sick!!!! It has been 7 months and I still have not found anything with 14 years experience. The services do not seem to be the way for me as I need/want some time off to show my dogs and have a life. Some of the people that went with them are typing 6 days a week to make minimums. Hope it goes well for you.

quality for overtime? I don't know how you could be actually as you are paid by lines, right? If you are an employee and have to make a certain number of lines to get benefits, does the company keep track of how many hours you work? It just doesn't make any sense at all.

I have a few questions for anyone who is in fact an employee of M-Modal. My current employer just informed us that we were being outsourced to M-Modal. We, being 12-13 MTs, are really freaking out. Forgive me if this topic has been covered and/or beat to death, but were most of you aware that not only does Nuance outsource some/a good portion of the work to India, but that Nuance India actually outsources their work to other companies? It is one thing that they're sending it oversees in the first place, but then once it goes to another company, and potentially another one after that if they're anything like US companies... So I've been a transcriptionist for 15 years, the last 8 years I've been self-employed, contracted to a local hospital (recently bought out by a bigger hospital), and several family practices and nursing homes. The hospital decided to oursource transcription to M*Modal, with each of us getting an "offer" from M*Modal (thus preventing the employed transcriptionists from being able to draw unemployment, nice). We just found out our hospital jobs are being outsourced to Nuance. I am really worried. From the webinar we attended, Nuance said all the right things and it didn't sound too bad, but it sure doesn't mesh with what I'm reading here.
