Let Us Be Civil to our Supervisors - SecondWind

Posted: Feb 03, 2010

I think our supervisors are in the same boat with us.  However, to keep their jobs, they have to color their communications to staff (us)  in the manner stipulated by the company.  It might seem stiff, uncaring and absolutely contrary to the personality they present to the world, but they are trying to keep their jobs.  After us, our immediate supers are the low men on the totem pole and I believe they take a beating.  I can tell that by how often my supervisors change.  Also, as they are hourly instead of production, their salaries cannot be whittled down to minimum wage via the strange line counting devices we have to struggle against.  If they are making a decent salary, the company might think that diminishes their value as they could  hire 2 or 3 people for that money.  I would not complain about them or give anyone a reason to start picking away at their flesh.  None of this is their fault.  They started out loving this profession, just like most of us did.  I am not, never was,  and never want to be a supervisor in the MT industry.

It is despicable the way the suits hide behind the - low-level supes. I hope there is Karma. nm

Maybe some, but not most. So many are just control freaks - yes and no

and flat out liars and this is the only industry where they would be able to get away with it. I listened to an hour's worth of lies from my supervisor last night and she just kept continuing, guess she didn't know I had the documents that showed it all sitting in front of me.

Supervisors - MDI/trans MT

I was a former supervisor for MedQuist, and I do agree that there are a lot of supervisors out there that are sneaky, coniving, prejudicial and do give work to those they most like. When I became a supervisor, I vowed to treat all my MTs with the same compassion and fairness that I wanted, and didn't get too often, when I was an MT. I had over 250 girls I was responsible for and believe me it is a thankless job. You are held responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of all accounts assigned to you, every MT on those accounts, staffing, firing and hiring, sometimes counselor, and the list goes on and on. Most of the time, I never left work at night at a certain time, and carried my job home with me. I had phone calls way into the evening, and was always available when the girls wanted to talk to me. I have seen the not so nice side of being an MT and being under supervisors that were a total nightmare and did not hesitate to leash fire and brimstone on those that disagreed with them. I never wanted to be like that, and I can say I never was. There is never a time that you should not treat anyone fairly, for whatever reason, in this industry, and I always wanted to be fair and just to everyone. I was really sympathetic with every MT who came to me wanting help. I left MQ after fighting for something with regard to an MT and how she was being treated and never regretted doing so. I saw some pretty underhanded things happen, lies told, people torn apart, and you were never backed up by administation, in other words they did not "know" you when you needed help. I wish each and everyone of you the best.

More supervisors should have your sense of fairness and respect. MQ lost a good one and I'll bet your MTs miss you too.
Thank you so much! - MDI/trans MT

I should have had more like you! Thank you so much for your comment..that means so much to me. I became very close with the MTs and do miss them.

Do not know what you do for work now, but maybe you should look into holding seminars for supervisors for these large companies and reinforce to them your ETHICS and what should be theirs. You deserve a standing ovation!!!!
What a wonderful reply - MDI/trans MT

You are so very kind:) I work now for MDI/Transcend, and I used to teach new MTs. I always thought how nice it would be if the MTs were to give courses to doctors and staff about dictating, respecting the MTs and general information they should know. Again, thanks..this means so much to me.

I am very appreciative, respectful, and nice to the ones - sm

who treat me with the same respect. The power-crazed ones, not so much.

I totally agree!! - MDI/trans MT

I totally agree with what you said. There is no reason why anyone should not expect to be treated with respect and never talked down to. You can never expect cooperation or enthusiasm from your team if you do not show them that they are needed, respected and that they are a highly important member of any work force.

On this board I keep seeing "talk to your supervisor" when you have an issue, such as why is your company now outsourcing to India and saying they are not, why has your company cut your salary in half and refused to negotiate when you have been there for years, etc. If you ask your supervisor and your supervisor blows you off, lies (and you have verifiable facts to prove it), or labels you a troublemaker for simply asking in a polite way, why exactly is it that said supervisor deserves kudos? Be polite, sure, but I'm getting a little tired of the suck-up-to-management theme some people here keep harping on.

I agree 100% - RLee

I was brought up to treat others with due respect and to treat others as you expect to be treated, as well as not to lie and and be HONEST. When I get those factors back in return then I will reciprocate in the SAME fashion.

Does Superior Global Have The Worst Supervisors And QAs?
Mar 05, 2010

If it just me, or does Superior Global have the worst Supervisors and QAs?  They all send feedback like crazy, no one is on the same page, they can't keep track of what is going on, beg people to work and pay them NOTHING.  I have never seen anything like this.   Who set this mess up?   Bad Bad Bad!   They need some people who know what they are doing.   The emails begging people to work crack me up.  "Thank you for all you do."  Thanks for that little sentence of appreciation ...

Nuance...are Incompetent Supervisors A Problem For Anyone Else?
Oct 03, 2011

I have been working for Nuance for about four months now. From day one, I have trouble with supervisors and communication as well as stupidity!! It took me THREE WEEKS to get completely trained for ONE ACCOUNT so i could start working. During that time, for 1-1/2 weeks, I was communicating with a person who I was initially told to be my supervisor to find out 1-1/2 weeks later after she finally emailed me back that she was not my supervisor as the account that I had been hired to work on ha ...

Supervisors Can Make Your Life A Living
Nov 19, 2012

I have known this for all the years that I have been in this business, but unfortunately I came face to face, so to speak, with this problem again recently.  I stated a point to my supervisor by e-mail, and very nicely, about some technical difficulties I was having, and no matter how I would explain it, she did not understand what I said.  Even the tech told her that it was not due to my computer, but the connection I had.  She said she would call me, and I said I would look ...

The Companies Who Recruit For Full-time IC's, Especially IC Supervisors.
Jan 14, 2010

If IC's are supposed to be available for other jobs, then aren't these companies just hiring for IC's as a way to avoid paying employee benefits?  How do they get away with this?  I'm disgusted when I see all the job openings specifically wanting IC's.  It seems abusive to me.   ...

Now I Know Why People Post Questions On The Boards Rather Than Ask Supervisors
Jan 18, 2010

The original company I worked for was sold to a big company and I had loads of unanswered questions.  I would call supervisor or someone who had been in contact with the peeps from my old company and ask away.  Now I find out I have been labeled a troublemaker because I ask too many questions.  I guess I would have been wiser to just come on this board and fire away with complaints, questions or anything else I wanted to know.  I know my future is gone now where I am. &n ...
