A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
Whenever I have looked for a new job in the past, I have always had several offers a day or two after I started looking. Now, I spend hours testing only to get offers of 3 cpl for VR and 6 cpl for standard transcription. I have survived as a single parent all of these years, having a good career as an MT, and I haven't been able to pay bills for the last year. Everyone is frustrated with the industry. It is not the economy - it is the huge outsourcing that has driven prices for MTs down. Hospital fees are rising - it's not like they can't afford to pay for a $5 report. Because so many people are unhappy with their pay, it is very difficult to find a good job right now because companies are inundated with e-mails. I was offered a job a month ago by Intellitype, a cut in pay at 8 cpl, but straight typing nonetheless. When I received their contract, it was 8 cpl for black characters only, a Costa Rican company, and if I made any errors I would be paid at 1/2 the price for the report - or I would not be paid for the report - and would incur a $20 fine for the error(s). While my work is good, why in the world would I take a job where I could end up owing the company money to work there - at their discretion? I am not being sarcastic when I say I could make more at McDonalds right now. I had my own successful business years ago, and it grew so fast. I think MTs need to go out and get their own accounts and take back this industry. I simply posted a yellow pages ad and sent out a few business cards, and in six months I had three awesome easy accounts and three employees. My cients loved me because of the service and quality of work. Not everyone wants a huge company. Some physicians want quality and someone to drop by and see if there is anything you can do to assist them more. You do not even need to purchase your own equipment anymore - there are HIPAA compliant companies you can use. Anyway, if you are offered a job at Intellitype/Lofin, be sure to read your contract carefully, as you will be under the arbitration laws of Costa Rica or some place out there in the world (not here) and they will conveniently not give you this information (fines and no spaces) while they are offering you the job and congratulating you on the telephone.
