I'd like to find a company that doesn't require me to load their software. - MoMT

I basically would like to grab my work from an FTP site, transcribe it in word, and upload it back. Are there any companies that still do that?

There are a few small companies and probably some Independent Contractors who subcontract who do, but they may be hard to find. There are a couple on MTJobs who say they use FTP. That may be a place to start until other MTs who work at those companies start posting replies here.

If you've got Dictaphone and long distance, Freedom Type works this way. Straight typing into word, email the work to her. When I worked with Deb, it was SO nice not to worry so much about internet intereference (which I was having a lot of back then - knock on wood not now). Anyways, she's as laid back as it comes to work for, decent accounts. Good luck!

Hi, I am new to the independent contractor thing, but shouldn't a company that has "hired" you as an independent contrator have your SS and a 1099 filled out by you? Just wondering as it seems to me this is necessary and since it is not being done, it makes me wonder about this company that much more, espcially since others have stated they have not been paid by this company. I guess if they are not planning on paying me they don't need a 1099 or SS# huh? ...

I had to report an IC MT position to unemployment as a part-time job and income. I got the unemployment from a prior employee local job. I never worked for this MTSO until a few months after the unemployment was issued, and it was strictly IC MT. I got a call today from HR at Sten-Tel (Springfield) saying that they were getting ready to make me an offer. (Would consider taking it on only in addition to what I'm already doing due to hearing issues about lack of work.) us to download software that allows them full-time access to our personal computers, allows them to upload our info, track our history, etc.? If it has nothing to do with our daily MT work, then is it even legal to require us to install their spyware permanently on our own personal property?? I've never heard of a company doing this. ...
