Heres one: My first job, small transcription co. - owned by a neurotic and apparently - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
drug-addicted woman. She was always bouncing back and forth between telling us to "slow down and be more accurate", or shrieking at us to "speed up and produce more". I soon realized here "quantity" vs "quality" mood swings had to do with whether she'd taken her uppers or her downers that morning. If it was downers with a vodka chaser, she'd come in late, usually marginally groomed, and while slurring her words, tell us how important quality transcription was, and would point out out mistakes in front of everyone. It it was an upper day, she charged into the office at full gallop, usually carrying all sorts of folders with papers falling out of them, with a wild look in her eyes. As she richocheted off the ceilings and the walls, she'd be alternately making phone calls to backlogged clients, and yelling at us to go "faster, faster!"

The last straw for me was one day when NO speed was the right speed. First thing in the morning, she came to my desk and said she was going to lose my account if I didn't type faster, and if she lost the account, I'd lose my job.

About 2 hours later, the phone rang, and when she hung up, she came to my desk and threw everything I'd done on the floor, and started screaming about some complaint the client had just made. "You're going too FAST!" she yelled, "Slow DOWN!!!"

My desk was situated in a room adjacent to the front room where her desk was. Fortunately my desk faced out the window, with my back to her. But I could FEEL her glaring at me from the next room. Soooo, not giving a you-know-what anymore, I spent the rest of the afternoon typing my reports with ONE FINGER, hunt-and-peck style. She finally turned all red and looked like a giant pimple that was just about to explode. She same in and screeched, "Why are you DOING that?!" and I said, "Well, you told me to SLOW DOWN, so I'm just being extra-careful".

So then she says, "Get out! You're FIRED!" To which I replied, "That works for me." Got in my car and drove straight to my State Labor Board, where I filed suit for the raise she had supposedly given me about 6 months back, but which had somehow never made it to my paycheck. Not only did I get my money, but they also uncovered a bunch of other little bookkeeping "indiscretions", and she was put out of business. About 2 months later, I heard "through the grapevine" that she had ended up in a psych ward, where she should've been all along.

I love you for that story, thank you! - GigglingMT

Honestly, you told that so well I could envision every little and LOVED it. What a hilarious experience to look back on and giggle about!

Thanks for sharing that, seriously, it made my night a little lighter!

And just think! Those were the "good old days" of MT! - It was mostly all downhill from there. nm

Crazy supervisors - I know how you felt

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked for a place for quite a few years and went through 4 supervisors while I was there. The last one, who we all agreed should not type, would go into reports and make changes. I used to e-mail the owner and tell him she should not be typing. She put cabbage in my report in place of CABG, among a dozen other things in one single report. I was LIVID. When the owner called her into the office and asked her about it (he was not an MT and probably did not realize how bad it was), she said "my spell check wasn't on." Holy cow. They never did "let her go," so I finally had to quit. Every time they would get a new account, she would work on it before they agreed to sign us on, and they never could land any accounts while she was there, and I know that is why. It's hard making a concern known to owners or higher-ups because supevisors have the ability to make you look like you are being petty or have a grudge when they have day-to-day contact with the higher-ups, although since she is not there anymore I assume they figured it out. I loved that place - wish I wouldn't have had to quit because of her - but I couldn't take it anymore. She was embarrasing me.

Thats how too many companies get rid of the crazies - in their ranks: PROMOTE them to management.

Here' s my story - me

[ In Reply To ..]
When I first started in this business it was WAY back when you still worked in the MTSO office and used tapes. My manager thought she was gorgeous and would swish around the office. One day she flipped out at work and the white coats came and got her. The assistant, who took her place was an alcoholic. She would go to lunch and the joke was not to light a match around her. She would be out for a week at a time and not call the local office or the home office. We had a small kitchenette area and if someone didn't wash and put away their dishes she would wash them and lock them in her desk. I had a key because I was in charge when she wasn't there, so I would just go get everyone's stuff. She was finally fired when the backlog got to 7000 minutes and no one in the home office knew. Upper management finally stepped in and promised us the next manager would be an MT - she wasn't. We think she was doing the owner's son-in-law at one time and he needed to get rid of her. I complained that she wasn't an MT, never had been, and she said she could type and her English was good and she believed she could help out if she needed to. Her grammar was bad and she didn't even know how to turn on the computer. The office ended up closing because no one was taking care of business and the main account fired them. The manager had to move back home and live with mom and dad because she couldn't find a job. I thought she proved how good she was and I didnt/still don't feel bad that not only did she lose her job, but that the company had to close an office. I think they are still in business, though most people probably have never heard of them, unless they've been in the business a long time.

That was great! LOL... I totally understand your - description of the "swisher" - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to have to work under a "swisher" once. She wasn't an MT, she was an x-ray tech who had recently been promoted to Chief X-ray Tech. As soon as she got the promotion, she no longer wore scrubs to the office and actually took x-rays. She rarely did anything except bark at everyone all the time. Everyone hated her. She'd come to work in the morning, dressed to the nines in expensive clothes and spike heels, and would sit on a stool in the main area of the x-ray department, sipping her latte and reading the Wall Street Journal. She kept coming into my office and wanting to "borrow" my typewriter all the time, even when I was actively working. I'd come back to find my margins all changed, my typewriter ribbon used up, and food crumbs all over my papers. I finally started removing the carriage whenever I left the office, and locked it in my desk drawer. Finally we got rid of her one day, though unfortunately it wasn't how most of us would've liked. In fact it worked out even better for the snooty tech. One day after work, she walked into the employees' garage, and got hit by a car. And not just ANY car. It was a DOCTOR's car. The last I heard was, with the settlement she got, she bought herself a huge ranch up north - hundreds of acres. She's probably still sitting up there on the front porch of her rambling ranch-style home, sipping mint juleps or more lattes, and still reading the Wall St. Journal. We all hope she gets "et by a grizzly-barr" some day.

Can Anyone Suggest A Good MTSO With Acute Care Work?
Dec 16, 2011

Over 28 years experience, about 26 years of acute care.  Now doing clinic work, which is kiling me financially! The reason I'm in clinic work is because I was a Spheris employee and former MQ, but did not want to go back to MQ when they bought Spheris.  I am now doing mainly VR clinic work and obviously, it's killing my paycheck. I am quite sure even VR acute care would be better, but I would prefer straight transcription or majority of it transcription. I would work evening ...

I Just Wanted To Say Not To Give Up On A Search For A "good" MTSO

I have been looking for work since July. I recently started with Babbletype, even though their reputation on here was awful, but, I try to look at things from both sides. I mentioned my experience with them in a post below, so I am not going to reiterate it here. The other thing as well, is I have been waiting for my pay to be deposited into my PayPal account, which it should have been done on Wednesday and it still is not there. Not a heck of a lot, but when you need small things, every lit ...

2014 - Not A Good Year For This MT — But I Found A Good Fit (finally)
Jan 12, 2015

Rarely do I start discussion on mtstars - however, 2014 was a particularly challenging year for myself - an experienced MT/Editor (15+ years). However, I realize that many other MTs may be in the same position, i.e., having many years devoted to working at the Big MTSOs including “the M,” and “the N” and (now to be included) “the T” following close behind in total numbers of MT/Editors on staff. (Hint: Sure most of you know the M, the N and the T - and the names have been int ...

Hi, I hope this is the right forum to post this on. I have a few questions pertaining to my new MTSO business. Any input or advice would be helpful. First of all, I need help with pricing. I charge my clients .12 per 65 character line. I believe that is the going rate for my area. I am wondering what to pay my transcriptionists and editors. I originally thought to pay my transcriptionists .08 per 65 character line and my editors .04 per 65 character line but then I wouldn't be making any pr ...

MTSO Rates
Nov 23, 2009

Do you think the MTSOs cut their rates to their clients who are now using VR just as they have cut their MTs rates?  Seems that some MTSOs are scrambling for some reason to cut everyone's pay down (even their MT pay, not just ME pay).  I wonder if they are in over their heads with this new venture into VR and losing their arses and realizing it isn't quite the godsend everyone is making it out to be.  One can hope, and would serve them right! As far as MTSO rates are co ...

Nonpayment By An MTSO

How does one go about collecting money from a small MTSO who still owes me $1,049 for transcription I had done for them?  I quit working for them in May 2009 when I hadn't received payment.  I sent them several e-mails and they did pay me some of the money owed me.  Originally they owed me $2,049; paid me with one check for $500, then two more checks for $200 each, which were sent to me every few months in between.  They kept telling me they would pay me off the com ...

10 Suggestions For All MTSO's:
Mar 24, 2010

To all MTSO's:1. Show us the money. You make tons of it. We know it. You know it. Try paying us more of it, and cheating us out of less of it.2. Simplify your transcription platforms. Every time you "improve" them, for some STRANGE reason, it gets harder and harder to do a day's work on them. Some software salesman has sure taken advantage of whoever in your company buys transcription software. Please. Develop some sales resistance.3. Let MTs working on a primary account STAY on that a ...

Caring MTSO
Apr 15, 2010

At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, I'm curious to know if there are any MTSOs out there who you guys feel really and truly care about their MTs and not just the bottom line? I understand that business is business but it seems to me that if you have happy MTs then you have productive MTs, willing to accommodate and go above and beyond for the company, which in turn makes the retention rate of quality MTs high because they are happy.  They get to know the ...

MT Week And MTSO's
May 19, 2010

The little "trinkets" some of you have received is extremely comical and a so-called slap in the face to some, but some may view it as an actual good gesture, although I do not agree. When I worked at neurology they used to always acknowledge MT week with flowers or a $25 gift card to our local mall, but when they got a new office manager he combined Secretary's Week and MT Week into one. My coworker and I got acknowledged one year on Secretary's Week - now that is a slap in the face ...

MTSO's - Is This The Best I Can Expect?
Apr 05, 2011

After 20 years of hospital-based HIM transcription, they gave us away to Medquist.  I feel set up for failure by not getting consistent hospital accounts and never having a chance to learn a specific account.  Communication with management is - absent - unless they want something from you.  I also find the pay and line count methodology to be deplorable, to say the least.  I have VR experience, but find that Medquist just turns on literally EVERYTHING to VR, and most of it re ...

MT Versus MTSO
May 09, 2011

I have not been on this board in a few years but I can see a definite turn against medical transcriptionists.  The MTSO's have created a vulture type of attitude that has been passed down among many new transcriptionists in the business. I see the MTs being blamed for whining, complaining and for trying to voice their concerns about being treated badly by ROMs or team leaders or management in general. One statement is truly correct - MTSOs are in it for the money. That being said, let& ...
