Can someone who works at Silent Type explain to me - sm

Posted: Jan 29, 2014

why on earth you need to go to NJ for 3 days of training?  I am a poor MT; therefore, I cannot afford to go to NJ for 3 days for training.  It just doesn't make sense to me!??!

I do not work there - but...

Every other company manages to do all their training online. I did hear that ST pays up to a certain amount of your travel expense after x-amount of months, but if you ask me--if the platform is so complicated that you need to have someone sit with you by your side for 3 days,I don't want that platform.

I'd say if you're getting on an airplane, their reimbursement isn't going to much help you, except to defray part of the cost. If they only pay, say, $500 towards expenses, getting on an airplane will eat all that up, with nothing left for food or hotel.

They're kind of going down the tubes anyway, aren't they? Or at least I heard there's no work and whatever work there is, is ASR crud. Not even worth the time or effort of travel, even if they paid all your expenses and bought you lobster dinners.

Too many other crummy places to work, why go through all that trouble?

Well I participated in the training last year for three days, and it was brutal. You have to be there for 90 days before getting your travel expenses reimbursed, you do not get reimbursed for meals on their travel time, and you will run out of work.

CJ speaks the truth. Listen to her (or him, as the case may be).

I fell asleep - One of many ex-STMTs

They gave me a manual to read and it was so boring that I was falling asleep. Everything they did during the training in NJ could easily have been done remotely. I remember the people in the office pretty much ignoring me. It was like I was invisible.

If that's how they treat their new employees, imagine how much worse it gets when you actually work for them. Well, let me tell you, it gets a lot worse. I wouldn't recommend anyone spending their hard earned money to travel to NJ. If you do, there's a very good chance you will never be reimbursed.

You have to go there because - xxx

they are Luddites. In this day and age of high tech, there is absolutely no reason to do it. Maybe this is an early warning sign that you should not go there? Just saying.

Silent Type - just an MT

I get tired of all the negatives. Silent Type has its problems, it also has its pluses. I enjoy working with a 24-hour window, not having to punch a "time clock," and I make acceptable pay!

I agree with just an MT - One of many happy STMTs

I really enjoy working at ST. It seems there are one or two disgruntled ex-employees who post the same negative comments over and over and over. It's time to hear some positives. Experienced MTs are left alone to do their work, QA is very helpful and knowledgeable, they don't nitpick, they only point out things you need to know, great dictators for the most part, and where else can you get paid holidays (yes, every holiday is a day off with pay) plus very generous PTO? January is always slow and everyone panics and freaks out (the same everywhere) but then work picks up and things go back to normal. ST's platform is the best I have ever worked on, very easy and user-friendly. I have worked on DocQscribe, escription ,and a few others, and ST's is far superior. So...to "one of many ex-STMTs" I have to say leave it alone already, we're tired of hearing it.

I am also an MT at ST. I enjoy working at ST and have for almost three years. I have a 24 hour time frame to do my work, I get weekends off and I also get holidays off and have vacation time. I have become a great medical transcriptionist working with ST and their great QA people. All companies struggle with no work and everyone in this job should know that by now. By what I read on MT Stars I think ST is a great place to work and will stand by them. Keep you negative comments to yourself.

Well to all of the STMTs - Congratulations, and I am sure your time is coming, people want positives as well as negatives. I forgot to mention that one of the MTs that was there for training with me, went to lunch and decided not to return because she could not take the lack of professionalism. So as you have your right about being happy where you work, we also have the right to warn people, as it is quite an expense to put out there, if your not going to get an account you like or that is lucrative.

Exactly. To each their own. I myself felt the training was very professional. I was also reimbursed the money I put out. You know that going in.

many months ago. She sent me a followup email with a bunch of questions, which I took the time to answer and I never heard back. I have 16 years of experience in the field and a diploma. She couldn't even have the courtesy to respond that she got my email, after I asked a few times. While I assume she is busy, perhaps she should take more time answering/responding to serious applicants than posting to "hire" on here once a week. :(

silent type - oh boy

[ In Reply To ..]
Well, you don't have to punch a time clock because she puts 75 hours on your paystub no matter how many or how few you work.

You get a 24 hour window because oftentimes you need it to make the convoluted page count she goes by.

Please tell me how happy you are trying to verify let alone use your PTO?

Or how happy are you that when there's no work there's no communication?

Oh boy is right - No way to verify anything
[ In Reply To ..]
If you think there is a discrepancy in your pay, well that's just too bad. There is no way to verify your page count (even if you know you kept track and their computer is wrong), and emails asking for verification will go unanswered.

Medical transcription is a very difficult field right now and will be. Things change rather we like them or not. The job is great when the work is there but when it is not boy do we blame the company. I don't understand some of the things you are saying as they have not happened to me. All companies are hurting. It's your choice where you want to work or if you still want to stay in this field. I prefer to stay where I am at. There is good and there is bad, but in essence the good outweighs the bad.

I agree with just an MT - anon

I have been with Silent Type for almost 7 years. I make a decent pay and am left alone to work and have benefits!!

I am also tired of the negatives on this board.

it may be a wonderful company - but

the question was why make a new hire fly to and stay in New Jersey for training at his or her own expense, in this day and age? That's nuts.

for the 3 days of training several years ago. Everyone was very friendly. They had me stay in a hotel in Tenafly, NJ which is a very interesting town...talk about Mayberry style...it all closes up at 6 p.m. except for the Tenafly Diner which has good food. Anyway, I decided at the end of 3 days to not stay with the company (glad I hadn't given the notice to my current employer at that time) because I found their software at that time wasn't as productive but I've heard they've changed since then. I would say to go only if you're wanting to visit NJ/NY and don't mind paying for the trip out of pocket..and if works out then stay with them. Otherwise there wasn't anything they taught me that I couldn't have learned remotely.

Silent Type?

Can anyone give me info on Silent Type, either on the board or by e-mail? Would like to know about steady work flow, general idea about line rates, if they provide equipment, straight typing versus VR, weekends required, and do they still require you to train on site at your own expense and if so when is that reimbursed?  Any current info would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks in advance. ...
