Silent Type. Yay or Nay? - OldDog

Before I entirely commit myself to what seems to me to be their rather intricate and involved application process, would love to hear what others have experienced with them. I am a long-time MT (20+ years). I have been around the block but am not a job hopper, so I am looking for a long-term employer. Thanks!

Isn't that the NJ company that has mandatory on-site training? That YOU have to pay for, and they reimburse you only $500 of your travel expenses after 6 months of employment?

They really should post their ads REGIONALLY instead of nationally!

I am finding the whole process to be very, very unusual. If they are worth it as employer, I may be willing to jump through their hoops, but if the majority of posters here warn me away, I am not going to waste my time and money or theirs.

I figure if their software or whatever is so complicated you can't do a Go-To-Meeting or Webinar, then I don't want to know about it. These days, there's just no reason to go on-site first. That is ridiculous. I wouldn't even do it if they paid ALL my expenses. Way too much trouble.

Nay - been there. If the owner MG is still running it - absolutely no. They are really nice at first, then they stab you in the back, not supportive.

I think it's worth it. While you *could* train 100% at home, it was nice to actually get to meet the main characters, to be able to ask your questions right to someone and get immediate feedback. Plus I made a couple of new MT friends that I trained with. I was promptly reimbursed for my expenses at 6 months.

MG is rude. But the work was great work and most of the time plentiful. Given the reality that you aren't sitting with the owner while you transcribe, I wouldn't not apply because of that.

They pay by the page, which is a bit wonky but comes out as a mid-cents-per-line rate. There's a bonus program too.

I think if you are looking for a good gig and long-term commitment it would be a good choice.

I finished college and am phasing into a new field. I enjoyed my time at Silent Type.

I have been with Silent Type for a year now. I enjoy the fact we work M-F schedule and no weekends. I also enjoy the fact that we have good QA. I also enjoy the fact we get vacation and bonuses. I also enjoy the fact we are offered health insurance and 401-K. Girls don't forget these perks when you are complaining about the work being light. I was hired and told there was plenty of work. I could get all the pages I wanted. I am seeing a patten of only 1-2 days a week where I get work and the other days it just trinkles in.
