Assistmed having employees/IC pay for HIPAA training - ME
Posted: Oct 02, 2012
Has anyone ever had to pay for this through the company they work for?
This is crazy. A unique way of getting more money out of the very people - that do the grunt work. Cant charge SM

any less, they have probably tried that and it didnt work. So this is a way of getting their hands in MT pockets, AGAIN.
Hey, ICs, this is a tax write-off for you. Dont forget. - nm

not if you are an employee and don't have enough "write offs" to deduct - anon291

besides that, I am of the mind set that if I have to be "forced" to do something, it should be at the company expense, not mine.
Ummm, note post says "Hey, IC..." Should be a hint not talking - about employees. nm

Ya think?
pick pick pick....it was 5 in the morning...what do you expect? - anon291

perfection?? Even as an IC, many would not have enough deductions to write this off anyway. ya think? geez!
You have no idea about ICs. We can write off portion of household - expenses among others. This would qualify. nm

I AM and IC....have been doing my own taxes - anon291

for years....I OWN my own home and depending on income annually, SOMETIMES, I do not have enough deductions to equal or exceed the STANDARD deduction, and so cannot use the household write offs. This has happened more than once. Not everybody's tax situation is the same so don't give false info until you know everybody else's situation!

now that you think you have had the last word (and I hate that type of person because they always think they are right no matter the question),
PPPPFFFFTTTT. :-P
I start work at 5 am, fresh & alert. What does time have to do - poor reading comprehension? nm

you may be "fresh" and "alert", but you are not perfect. - anon291

I have never had to pay for HIPPA training. That has always been provided free of charge by my employer. Where do they expect you to get the training and pay for it yourself? How much do they expect you to pay?
Just a quick Google, seems all info needed can be gotten from G'ment - for free. Why do they need to charge? nm

At MM we have to do HIPAA every year, for FREE. Will this - MTSO charge you EVERY year? nm

M*Modal pays us to do the HIPPA training once - a year. As with most jobs - sm

I have never heard of a job making you pay for that type of thing. When I worked for a hospital we were paid to do it every year as well.

I used to work there and yes, they did charge for the HIPAA training, test, and certificate of completion. I forget how much it was, but I think it was $25, and they do it through a company they are "affiliated with" who offer them different educational courses at a reduced rate for their MTs, if they choose to continue their education. They take the money right out of your pay before you even see it and you are "forced" to sign a release saying they are allowed to do this. If you refuse to take the course and test, they can terminate you for it. I remember at the time I was forced to take this course, I posted on here about it and some responders said that the courses were free elsewhere, but when I went to Google it, I could find no place that offered training in this for "free" and many charged upwards of $80 for the course, so I relented and did it, although I was not happy about it when other companies were offering it for free. This was NOT a yearly thing though, but once you took the course and test, and received your certificate, you had to submit it to HR to prove that you actually did it. It was a one-time thing, as far as I know. I quit within about six months afterwards due to other things about the company that I did not agree with. Good luck to all who still work there. I wish you well.

When I worked for Scribe Right I had to pay. I think it was $15.00. I never questioned it because I needed the job!
And that is exactly what they count on. Wonder if they needed you more & - would have waived fee if you insisted. nm

I do believe that is illegal - sm

...and they should be reported. It is possible that the laws are different for ICs versus employees. Remember - an IC is NOT an employee, and you should not lump them together.

HIPAA Training Jan 27, 2015I get why they do these webinar things, but honestly, the person narrating sounds like she herself is bored.
I try to follow it, take notes, but know deep down that when I do the test very little of it will have been absorbed, so am resigned to taking the test any number of times.

Mandatory HIPAA Training UNPAID Jun 04, 2010So I read the below post about the email circulating among some employers (including mine) about this mandatory class and test for HIPAA. This is an excerpt from what I received today in my inbox:
I am getting some questions about the mandatory HIPAA class being unpaid. Let me clarify why this is the case. Taking the class is mandatory, but unpaid because it is a legal requirement and can be taken at your own pace, on your own time. We are actually helping you to protect ...

HIPAA - Need A Quick Check On HIPAA Rules Oct 29, 2009Hi,
I need a quick check on HIPAA rules. With respect to the health care debate, I want to write to my senator, etc., about a situation with a patient I transcribed on.
The only info. I intend to give is that the patient was a: Russian immigrant, on welfare and receiving Medicaid benefits--when he should not have. He and his "sponsor(s)" was responsible for his care and living expenses.
Further, I transcribed a note in which the doctor said that this patient wanted to re-sched ...
OMG How Funny - Read Glassdoor Opinion Of Employees, US Versus Indian Employees! Aug 05, 2013I was just curious about what employees thought of Nuance on Glassdoor. You read several US employee opinions and they reflect the morale listed on MTStars. Scroll further down and read the opinions of the transcriptionists from India. What a difference. They are highly satisfied with their jobs and most have been working with Nuance for 6 to 7 years. The US transcriptionists are very sad!! What a difference..... ...
