Now those who desire to do so can become Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialists with clinic experience and later Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialists after about two years of experience. It is necessary to recertify every two or three years. The certification was important for hospital employees in the past. It is still important for some direct hire positions. The online companies mostly don't even know about certification and don't care.
