Live Messenger would be kaput after, I think, April 2014. We were supposed to immediately switch to Skype. Microsoft had bought Skype and didn't want people using anything else. Before that the chicken-little routine was about MSN Messenger.

I used both for two or three years after ward. Only stopped using WLM when the last of the servers was shut down.
