The last hospital I worked at, Nuance had come in and taken all the jobs (about 75 MTs hospital system wide) almost 2 years ago. They are now in the process of elimating the need for MTs altogether. H&Ps are now going to be going to voice understanding. All those MTs even overseas will be losing their jobs very soon. The other area system they had taken over some years before ours, is already at about 100% voice recognition/understanding where they do not even need MTs/editors at all. It is all done with templates and technology.
There are EMR/EHR systems that can pull information in from any ancillary department such as labs, pharmacy, etc. and place it in the report. These programs even code.
Hopefully we have a few years left, but this is such an aggressive effort to eliminate the need to utilize employees and thereby pay benefits, etc. Hospitals are about profit the last 2-3 decades since capitation.
