If you lose your job due to being fired, low work volumes, layoff, company closure, etc., or if you're UNDEREMPLOYED, meaning you're making less now than you earned in the last year (5 quarters some states), you should file for unemployment benefits. I know of an MT who moved from hourly QA to production QA and got unemployment because she was making quite a bit less. That is underemployment and is applicable in most states. But certainly if you lose your job, accounts, hours, or pay, you should certainly file. They will then make a determination if you were really an employee or IC and pay you accordingly.
