Being bought out by another company does not automatically make you an IC. If you were an IC at the old company and the new company does not use ICs, then you may be required to become an employee. Things usually stay the same for a short period of time, then you will be switched over to the way the new company does things. As far as straight transcription going to SR, it's probably more driven by the MTSO than the client. As far as layoffs, every company is different, so I don't think anyone can answer that question. Companies sell their businesses to another company for a lot of reasons, not just because they are going under, as you say.
