...I don't find them terribly ambiguous as far as legal documents are concerned. I stand by my "rule slapping" when it comes to my explanation as to why the correction (let's remember that it included no point deduction) was made. As far as your example, I would only type it as your first sentence appears, as that is the correct punctuation. I would actually be the opposite of capricious as a QA gal (which I thankfully am not), because for me the rules VERY rarely need to bend, and all documents I reviewed would be uniform because of that.
