Not putting a hyphen here really is incorrect. That is indicating that the bowel obstruction was small. That's why this needs a hyphen. We are talking about the small bowel. As other note said small-bowel obstruction. Obstruction of the small bowel.

"obstruction of small bowel" OR "small-bowel obstruction" - flybye

use a hyphen to avoid confusion...

it's not a 'SMALL OBSTRUCTION of the bowel' but it is an 'OBSTRUCTION of the small bowel'

so you need the hyphen to clarify; small-bowel obstruction

that's the way I was trained, as well - nm

I thought so at first as well. Isn't there a book/list somewhere with the official/correct MT words?

It's not "right words" vs. "wrong words," it's knowing English grammar - SM

-- and when two words (such as "small" and "bowel" in this case) form a compound modifier and require a hyphen.

small bowel - Carol

Do not hyphenate small bowel. Think of the small bowel as one entity. If you add a hyphen, it would indicate that the bowel is small. Research small bowel on the Internet for a better understanding. I would never hyphenate small bowel. A similar nonhyphenated word would be upper extremity. If the sentence read, "upper extremity weakness," you would not hyphenate upper extremity here either. The upper extremity is understood to be one entity.

respectfully disagree...compound modifier...sm - flybye

hyphenation of a compound modifier like small-bowel obstruction is necessary.

Small-bowel Versus Small Bowel
Jun 08, 2015

I've always just used "small bowel," but then noticed most put "small-bowel," I assume to differentiate it as being part of the intestine as opposed to a small, or little bowel.  Okay, that makes sense, so I stated hyphenating small-bowel.  However, I just got marked off by QA for putting in a hyphen!  No matter what you do or don't do, you're screwed!  I do believe they just look for ways to antagonize so you'll never feel appreciated.  ...

Bowel Sounds

Can anyone offer some different words to describe bowel sounds on the physical exam?  I've looked online and the ones I've found (normal, present, active, positive) just don't sound like what the doctor is saying.  Of course he sounds like he's turning away & speeding up his words when he says whatever it is he's saying, so it could be anything, but it sounds like it starts with an "n" and has a t sound in it and is possibly two syllables.  Any ideas? ...
