Grammar - This meets with the patient and family’s acceptance and approval - MTmom

Posted: Aug 11, 2010

Which is correct: This meets with the patient and family’s acceptance and approval. or This meets with the patient's and family’s acceptance and approval. This is something he says all the time, and it sounds like he says it both ways.

I pick #2 - ddd

I wouldn't say patient acceptance, but patient's acceptance.

MTmom - adnil

I agree with #2 as well. if you separate them out, it makes sense.

Agree with #2 - Old MT

I always take out the other party to see what it should be. Makes it much easier. I do that with all sorts of things, like her and her mother went to the store. You wouldn't say her went to the store, you'd say she went to the store.

It's a neat little trick.

I took an advanced grammar course recently & found out some interesting things that have changed since I first took grammar in school.

I had thought it was always incorrect to say "patient and family's" and that this should always be changed to "patient's and family's," but apparently it's now recognized that there are times when both are correct depending on the situation.

If it's something that belongs to both parties and you can think of the two things as a unit, like "Bob and Mary's anniversary," then Bob, *not* Bob's, is actually correct. Sometimes, though, the entities are not necessarily a unit, such as in your example. I would imagine it's important (for a lot of reasons, legal being one) to express that each entity separately has given its acceptance, so in that case "patient's and family's" would probably be preferable.

If that makes any sense.

In my class there were some very interesting examples of the ways in which new findings in neurolinguistics -- about how we perceive things, how the brain separates or joins concepts, are reflected in a more modern grammar.

Has Anyone Gotten Approval For Christmas PTO?
Nov 19, 2010

Of all the MQ employees here scheduled to work on Saturdays, has anyone been approved to have off Christmas Day?  I put in my request exactly 60 days ahead of time (since we can't do it before that) and have yet to hear anything.  My CCM, who is pretty good about responding to e-mails, has not responded to me when I questioned whether I've been approved. So, my question is, has ANYONE gotten the OK to take off Christmas?     ...

I can hardly sit here to work wondering how much money I'm going to lose from last week. Before: average 10,000 lines of VR/week @0.413 per line = $413 PLUS weekly incentive averaging $100+/week = $513/week which I can live with. Last week - noting how many reports were ripped by FIESA, figuring without QC/QA scores - 10,000 lines, now 5000 lines x 0.07 = 350.00 with no weekly incentive = I NEED A NEW JOB. ...
