I just don't know if I can do this today. nm - wannie

nm

I feel that way every single day. - I really do.

Before you all tell me or the other poster to just go work for somebody else:

I am over 55 and age discrimination is real.

I am disabled and discrimination against people with challenges is real.

Many brick and mortar jobs simply are not possible.

Any MTSO I work for would just as likely be bought by Nuance as the last one I worked for.

So, you know, never mind on the friendly advice.

I agree with you... - kk

on all of the above. I am under 50, but I have been looking for a new job since they rolled out the new comp plan, and what I'm finding is pretty frightening. I've had 4 interviews and 4 offers with other transcription companies. I've taken none of them simply because they aren't paying any more, the schedules are not any better than what I have now, and I had one company who also used a "grid" system to determine pay and I'm afraid many companies will be following suit very soon. I dread logging on for my shift each day, dread looking at FIESA, dread it all, so I am looking for something outside of MT. Only reason I'm staying is because as of this time, I haven't found anything better. Anyone who says just leave and get a job somewhere else has no idea how difficult that is to do.

I'm 55, too, and have extenuating circumstances - wannie

where I absolutely have to work from home or put my mother in a nursing home. I've interviewed with other companies, too, and the pay is just as bad or worse. Been through 2 buy-outs already and don't care to go through another one. I'm just sooooo tired of all the junk, the stupid tiered pay, the lousy dictators, all the different account specifics. Sorry for my rant, here, but I just had to vent a little or I was going to bust (or quit, which I can't afford to do). Thanks for "listening" and not being judgmental.

I am touched by your circumstance because I cared for my Mom - Tinear

in my home for 5 years while learning this as a new career skill. On some nights, I would have a terrible Hindu dictator on my headset and my mother screaming her head off from dementia in the other room. My mom passed away in my home and I was glad I took care of her, but feel cursed in this God forsaken profession. I think they call it situational depression!
Cursed - Dotty

You sound like me. I too had my mom with dementia living with me who passed a couple of years ago at age 91. This profession is a "cursed profession." I didn't have a horrible Hindu doctor but at the time, had a Jewish-American neurologist who made me want to kill myself! Thank God, that is all now in the past ...
Same here....mom with dementia....I guess - a lot of us are in this situation...
[ In Reply To ..]
I remember a few years ago when I first had to move her in with me that I was so thankful to be able to have a great job telecommuting so I can take care of her. Now, things as you all know are hitting rock bottom in this "career" so I'm having to contemplate getting a "regular" job....then realizing that it just won't work....she would die if she had to go to a nursing home and I don't want her to have to. Not even sure we could afford that. Too bad mom couldn't have gotten dementia 10 years ago when this was still an okay job. I wouldn't have to worry day and night. Sad.

Extenuating - I hear you

We as women workers are being thumped into oblivion more or less; and yes, as we age, it is even worse for the most part .. I am working on this issue. Plus in replying to this post, I see Elite Medical Scribes is advertising (Ha)! who by the way in this state pay minimum wage if dumb enough to work for them!
Yep, I'm 65, so that ups the age-discrimination - significantly. Only crickets, no job-app replies.
[ In Reply To ..]

How do you know if you don't try? - No spring chicken either

[ In Reply To ..]
I took a chance on a job, decided to try it out part-time and see just how it went. The pay is also tiered, and it looked bad on paper but in reality it at least isn't any worse. The line counts seem better. Here's a clue: Nuance brags having the lowest requirement. The reason just might be because they have a way of counting the lines lower than other companies.

Another thing that's worth it is just for sanity sake not having to deal with all the frustration at Nuance. Granted, another company could get bought up by either Nuance or MModal, but I think most of that is over now too. Neither one of them has emerged as the leader. They both have bad reputations and clients don't seek them out. They have been buying their clients by buying up other companies and just like us, the clients don't appreciate having been tricked like that either. Those contracts are only for a few short years and after that (and I know for a fact that none of the clients I've worked for are happy) they will just go elsewhere, just paving the way for other better companies to grow.

Just because they have some money (at your expense) to buy out others and then run them into the ground doesn't make them superior.

Oh, believe me. I am trying. I apply to ANY job - wannie

that looks even halfway decent. It's just hard to find one with the fit that I have to have right now.

Can't do this - Disappointed

[ In Reply To ..]
Yep, agree with everyone. I just turned 60 a couple months ago and know the who age discrimination thing. Of course, no potential employer would every say it to your face but you KNOW from the questions and the looks. I also agree that no matter where you go, you'll basically get treated the same so what's the point ? It is so very sad. It's no wonder I'm on meds for depression that I NEVER had a problem with until working as an MT.

Age discrimination - AnotherAnon

[ In Reply To ..]
I just wanted to say that not all companies discriminate against age. My dad, who is turning 79 this year, was hired by Home Depot about 4 months ago and he has been happily working there since. He is making a couple of dollars above minimum wage, they love having him there and is treated much better than we are treated by Nuisance.

All the Home Depot ads I've read have a rather - high-poundage lifting requirement.

[ In Reply To ..]
I see that as partially age-discrimination, but in particular discrimination against women - who don't have the same upper body strength as men at any age.
How is that gender discrimination? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I get your point, but I certainly don't see a weightlifting requirement as gender discrimination. It's just part of the job. That's like saying an MT job that that as a 65 wpm requirement is discrimination against someone who only has one hand. If they can type that fast, it doesn't matter what they have.

I used to work as line service at an airport, and the weight lifting requirement was 75 pounds. You're right, a lot of women probably could not do that, but the reason it was part of the job requirements is because you needed to be able to lift passengers' bags and also lift heavy equipment overhead. Likewise with Home Depot; it's just part of the job.
I still think it's veiled gender discrimination. - nm

Not age-discrimination or discrimination against women - AnotherAnon
[ In Reply To ..]
My dad works in the Lumber Dept lifting lumber for his entire shift 18-25 hours a week. At 78-1/2 it keeps him busy and keeps him fit.

I work part-time in the Flooring and Tile Dept, I'm 51, lifting boxes of tile and rolls of carpet 25 hours a week. There is no discrimination against women in fact my Dept is about 70% female. I cannot wait for the day when I can go full-time and quit Nuisance.

I'm not saying it's for everyone, but it's definitely not age-discrimination or discrimination against women, and I don't have to pay to go to a gym!!! LOL

anybody see the Freaky Friday movie? LOL, that's what I feel like the interviewer sees when I walk into the room! (I'm 63) Why would they choose someone like me over some 20s/30s/40s chick, if we have similar qualifications? They're probably figuring I'll fall and fracture my hip or have a heart attack within the next couple of years.

Ha! I had a near fatal heart attack in my mid 40s. - Never know

Is Anyone Else Getting Less ASR Today?
Feb 03, 2010

My work is normally about 97% ASR, today I have only had 1 ASR job.  I'm not complaining, quite the opposite actually.  I'm just curious if anyone else is getting less ASR work today.  I was hoping it was down and we can expect a day or two of straight typing. ...

Anyone Else Down Today?
Apr 29, 2010

Unable to log on because DQS needs to be updated.  Then can't update on DocuManage because there's no link.  They tell me they someone will call back and help me, but they have no way of knowing when.  This would definitely qualify for technical downtime, am I right?  Anyone else having this issue today? ...

What Is Up With DQS Today?
May 23, 2010

DQS is driving me crazy today.  When I push the pedal, it takes a couple seconds to start playing.  If I let off the pedal, it keeps going for a couple seconds and I can't get it to stop.  The typing I am doing does not keep up with my finger speed either, with words not showing up until after I've typed them. I use my own computer and have never encountered this issue before.  It is a major hindrance though, slowing me down. What's next? ...

Today Was My Last Day With MQ.
Jun 08, 2010

Typing that last report, signing out for the last time.....it was all very surreal.  I still can't believe I actually left.  Sad though because I wasn't offered anything PT (not that I would had taken it), and nobody said "we'll be happy to take you back".  AND....no exit interview.  Guess I thought they appreciated me more than that.  Oh well.  Some of my friends wished me well and will miss me.  Thats all I need.  ...

Feb 04, 2011

Since my shift started a little over an hour ago, I have blown out my hair, cleaned the bathroom, made a dentist appointment and paid some bills! Whew! Hope everybody has a great weekend! ...

Today Is When I Let It All Go
Jul 13, 2012

I get so fuming mad about all these things that are going on at Nuance and with our careers and livlihoods, the lies and deceitful practices of this company that came along and gobbled up all the MTSOs and made my life a nightmare. I am the type of person that wants to fight for what is right and make my voice heard. Why such a company could come in and treat the employees the way Nuance does. I fell that if I try to fight I will just get myself into major trouble. ...

The BIG Lay-off Today
Apr 04, 2013

I have not posted on this site for a long, long time because there is so much negativity on here and stuff that was posted that is simply untrue.  Not sure why anyone would stay with a company when they are so unhappy and then good people get laid off.  Today I got the call, about 3 hours into my shift. I knew something was up as my caller ID never says Medquist on it.  My TSM's voice sounded really awful and all she could say was I am sorry to call with bad news but you have ...

Today Was My Last Day As An MT
May 22, 2014

After over 25 years as an MT, I'm not going to lie, I am a little sad. However, MT is not what it used to be. It served me well for about 20 years or so before it started to go south. I did manage to avoid VR, but it was only a matter of time.  I recently completed school (again) and I am starting a new career. I know many people think it can't be done on the wages MTs have been reduced to, but I am living proof that it actually can! I continued working as an MT while I was in sc ...

Something That Irks Me Today..........
Dec 09, 2009

So our CCM emails us saying when our work dries up there will be a certain account that we will help out on (as we have in the past).  She apologizes, saying she knows this is a very "difficult account, but we need to leave as few QA markers as possible."  This just rubs me the wrong way.  She's right--it's difficult alright--- but not in the way she is implying.  She implies it's difficult because of the "difficult" terminology used in all the cardiac cathete ...

So Irritated Today.
Dec 30, 2009

It seems like every report I do today has an idiot on the other end.  I just had a doctor dictate "Medications (really long pause) 750 mg p.o. b.i.d. x5 more days." Really?  It'd be nice if you said WHAT medication that is!  I swear, ALL of them have been like that today.  They either drag on forever and forget what they're even saying or they just leave off half of the word because they think I should just know what they are saying/thinking without having to hear ...
