Refresher training - Nancye1962

Posted: Apr 12, 2011

I know that I just graduated and got my diploma in December/January. However, I feel that I need more training on things like styles, such as the forms in which each different type of report needs to be typed, etc. For instance, for an H&P- I need to get more training in the FORM that that needs to be done in- and other types of reports as well. I had a job that lasted all of 3 days; I am very upset that the training I got didn't seem to be enough for me to be familiar with the report styles, etc. It wasn't cheap, cost me a small fortune (by our financial standards) and I really need to find something that will help me zero in on my weak points without it costing me an arm and leg. Does anyone know of any programs that a person can download, etc., that focus on things like this? Punctuation, spelling, style guide, etc?

Sorry if this post seems to be a bit... rambling. I'm just upset. I had such confidence in myself, and was thrilled when I got the job, but then crushed when my employer came back with some very critical points. I was using Emdat InScribe, and this one particular transcription came in without specifying what type of report it was to be done in, etc. I flubbed up, badly., after a first flub-up last night- though that one was really somewhat out of my hands- I had an H&P with a 4 hour turn around, and due to the job I do here (that enables me to live here) I lost 2 hours on it before I could even start- then when I did start, I immediately ran into a snag where I just couldn't understand lipid panels.

I'm upset, and hoping for some advice.

Thank you.

Your employer should have provided you - with sample reports

so you would know what format to use. Each account is different, so what you might learn from some training program may not be anything like the specific requirements of the accounts you work on when you are employed.

You might have been taught some "standard" formats in your training, but in reality, there really are no "standard" formats (OK, maybe SOAP could be considered "standard") because every account is different.

I don't think it's your fault you didn't know how to format the reports youo were doing if you had not been given any samples or instructions.

Spelling and punctuation are something you can brush up on on your own if your prior education was lacking in those areas.

Style is also an account-specific issue. A lot of companies will say they go by the BOS, but they all have their own take on it and their own specific rules, so there is no universal standard there, either. You should be given specific instructions by your employer regarding style, and if they say they go by the BOS, make sure you know what edition they want you to conform to and where they deviate from it (because, trust me, they will deviate from it somewhere). You can't be expected to read minds, and it is your employer's responsibility to provide you with the information you need to perform the work they want you to do.

Good luck to you with your next job. I hope you find an employer who provides the information you need to do your job.

Thank you for the encouragement. No, there wasn't much in the way of samples, or instructions given. Some, but not much. When it came right down to it, what was given in the E-training, was not similar to what I was being given to work with, also lacked instructions for what type of document it was even supposed to be. If I had had the proper tools, I know I could have done the job. Anyway, thank you for your encouraging reply, feeling a little better today. Back on the job hunt!

I thought most companies had the headings, and you just fill in the reports from what I hear. I am new myself. MTsamples.com website shows all report samples so you may take a look at that.
Good luck.

I don't see how a website can be helpful, as each client hospital has its own account specs. They differ from account to account. There is no "one size fits all."

I agree. I was just replying to someone who did not seem to learn heading format in school and was wondering where she could get an idea, so I just sent in that website for her to get some samples. Your right every company is different with headings.

MT Refresher Course?
Aug 24, 2010

I thought M-Tec had three different courses.  I was just looking around and only saw one.  I am looking for a good brush-up course and don't want to waste what little money I have on a bad school, so thought I might have to look at total retraining at a good school since I cannot find any refhresher courses.  Does anyone know of a good refhresher MT course?  Your advice is appreciated.  Thank you in advance. ...

Considering MedTrans For Refresher
Feb 10, 2011

Yes, many may think I am nuts especially after already graduating from an accredited college with a specialized diploma in MT(and paying the student loans for it) but I am at the end of my rope.  Nance at MedTrans told me that they hire their graduates and that if I work for them for 6 months, I get the program fee back. If anyone has any feedback, good or bad, please, I would appreciate it. I am just getting frustrated at all of the "although your credentials are impressive, we desire ...

Training For 7.1
Aug 07, 2012

About 6 weeks back I finished the training for 7.0.  We were then told that go live was August 20, and that we had to do new training.  I just did it.  Ladies and gents, I am sorry to say I am scared to death.  First of all, I have ADD, and it is hard for me to understand things right away.  I am not stupid, but only a person with ADD understands what I am saying.  I am going to go over all the training again and again, as that is how I learn things (even in college ...

Who Is Training ASR??? Definitely Not The MT!
Jul 04, 2013

Every day ASR gets increasingly of base.  There are so many times when I have to sit and search each line looking for anything that remotely resembles what is being clearly dictated. It started out with maybe 35% accuracy before editing.  Now it barely makes 20%. It inserts phrases that were never dictated, apparently just because that dictator dictated that phrase at one time in the past on a different patient.  It is having fun with "ALLERGIES" now.  It started off only usi ...

Regarding The Old Reports Used For Training At MDI
Nov 25, 2009

I believe that these are old reports used for training, but I don't think they are training new MTs on the account.  I believe they are training VR.  Someone mentioned below that it doesn't make sense to pay someone to do old reports that have already been done, and I agree with that also.  Plus, think about the fact that MDI had never, ever trained like this before, even after receiving email after email asking where all our work was going and why we had no work.  ...
