Who is training ASR??? Definitely not the MT! - Rose

Posted: Jul 04, 2013

Every day ASR gets increasingly of base.  There are so many times when I have to sit and search each line looking for anything that remotely resembles what is being clearly dictated. It started out with maybe 35% accuracy before editing.  Now it barely makes 20%. It inserts phrases that were never dictated, apparently just because that dictator dictated that phrase at one time in the past on a different patient.  It is having fun with "ALLERGIES" now.  It started off only using this as a heading where it belonged. It has decided that every breath sound, chew, sneeze, cough, background noise  "uh" is, new line, double space, bold print, all caps:
"ALLERGIES:"

So who are the idiots training this software?  Are they expecting doctors to do it?  Hmmm.  We could have warned them about that train wreck decades ago!

Train wreck - Amen to that

If they shuffle a paper it blurts out nonsense. Some reports are not so bad, but the bad ones are unbearable.

Another Amen! - Addison

I have been making the same corrections day after day, report after report for almost a year, and it never learns. I've also noticed some things that were correct at first, and now are incorrect, even though there was nothing to change in the first place.

They - knew

about it years ago and don't care. They saw dollar signs and that's all she wrote. They have the customers convinced it is good, but don't tell them how many people are leaving the field due to the unbelievably stupid software programs that don't learn. Eventually, it will catch up with them. I believe it already is to some degree. MTs are leaving the field in flocks. As long as people are willing to spend time fixing all the garbage it spits out for the peanuts companies pay, they will get away with it. The reason reports are looking bad now is because people just don't care anymore, me included. There are the die-hards who still try to make these reports look perfect and criticize everyone who doesn't, but eventually they won't care either. The hospitals will, and are, getting what they pay for.

Can't afford to care anymore (sm) - Anon

I have spent decades being so conscientious about patient's records, proofing, looking up anything questionable, spending countless hours on research and maintaining 100% accuracy. The destruction of the MT position as we knew it by the MTSOs making money off of us while we are forced into bankruptcy and losing our homes has also destroyed our spirit to continue to give 100% when it only exacerbates our financial problems. It really goes against my grain to be reduced to survival mode, but I have no alternative. I can no longer afford the time to proof. I will no longer research on dictation errors and omissions. I no longer care to give the manager the courtesy of an email on something she should look into. I no longer care if the doctors have to start dictating first names. I no longer look up business names, doctor names, facility names. It's about time these moochers get only what they pay for!

The saddest part is anything we would have warned anybody about they would never listen or give us credit for knowing anything when we are the ones doing the work and have been for 20-30 years. In my experience ASR is a joke. Just another excuse to get rid of MTs and/or pay them next to nothing. Its a sad day in America that the bottom line, money and profit for the most greedy companies who do not care about us one iota, does nothing but put good hardworking MTs and MLS's into bankruptcy, make their lives more frustrating and the quality of the so-called work even lower. When will they wake up and smell the coffee? We all have to scramble harder and faster and jump thru hoops that should not even be there. Might as well join the circus.

pay should remain the same as transcribing - my opinion

Computer technology shouldn't lower our pay. Mechanics now work on computerized cars, and I'll bet they didn't take a pay cut. It's because we are women and can't band together like other female-dominated professions.

It would be almost bearable if the pay were the same. All hospitals and clinics should implement a dictation training program for new docs and remedial classes for the veterans.

Oh, pardon me. I was dreaming!

I agree about the pay - Leaving MT

When I was considering going into MT back in 2006-2007, one of my concerns about it being a good fit for me was my typing speed, which is just average. I thought MT would be a very good fit otherwise, and I had read about the changes with MT in terms of there being a lot more editing involved and less typing, so I thought that maybe I would be better at editing than straight typing. What I did not know back then was how much lower the pay is for editing because there is really no salary information that separates medical transcription from editing. I could not believe it when I found out that editing pays half of what transcription pays. I knew that pay for transcription itself could be highly variable, but the comparative pay for editing versus transcribing was a big surprise to me.

I am transitioning out of MT altogether, but I do enjoy my current MT job, which pays well and is all straight transcription. I see the writing on the wall, however, and our work has slowed down considerably in the last few years, to the point now where I have to spend way too much time waiting around for work (by my choice) if I want to earn what I did previously. It is a great part-time job, but it is no longer a viable job in which I am able to support myself.

I was listening to a dictator today who has a tendency to mumble, and on top of that today he was dictating with a lot of background noise. I thought to myself how awful it would be to edit a speech recognition draft of this report for 4 cpl.

Agree about the pay - GrateMT

If mouse clicks can be counted, then so can key strokes. Those of us doing all those corrections should be compensated for all we are doing.

About 6 weeks back I finished the training for 7.0.  We were then told that go live was August 20, and that we had to do new training.  I just did it.  Ladies and gents, I am sorry to say I am scared to death.  First of all, I have ADD, and it is hard for me to understand things right away.  I am not stupid, but only a person with ADD understands what I am saying.  I am going to go over all the training again and again, as that is how I learn things (even in college ...

Regarding The Old Reports Used For Training At MDI
Nov 25, 2009

I believe that these are old reports used for training, but I don't think they are training new MTs on the account.  I believe they are training VR.  Someone mentioned below that it doesn't make sense to pay someone to do old reports that have already been done, and I agree with that also.  Plus, think about the fact that MDI had never, ever trained like this before, even after receiving email after email asking where all our work was going and why we had no work.  ...

With Whom Did You Complete Your MT Training?
