Just hired for MT job with no training or experience! help! - Elizabeth1012

Posted: Sep 11, 2013

Hi,

Like I stated, I am a single mother who just moved and got hired in a medical office . The job ad said clerical.  It is transcription and coverage for other areas.   I have my degree in medical office technologies and i majored in medical coding.  Im on my 6 th week. Im still getting a little corrections back on my 3 I do daily, but now im learning the lengthy tapes and on top of my tapes and training, locking notes and printing, I am also covering the front office for an hour a day of my 6 hour day . My employers seem happy but I dont think they understand transcription.  The two other transcriptionists  are helping but I can tell they are angry and frustrated with me. They say thingslike they cant believe they hired me with no training or experience.  I feel as though I am not progressing and I am typing worse now.  Please someone tell me what is expected of me?  How long does this take to learn normally with no training or experience . I am so stressed out. I study and memorize quick words and bought a keyboard to plug into my lap top and practice at home.  I have bought books and im reading.  Please any help or advice  would be so appreciated.  Also I typed this with my phone on a tiny little screen.

I've been doing this for 16 years, and I'm still learning. - That just comes with the territory.

If you know medical terminology and have a grasp for A&P, which I'm assuming you do if you studied medical coding, hang in there. It just takes time to get to know the doctors, their catch phrases, accents, etc. Experienced MTs tend to get a bit snooty, for lack of a better word, when it comes to their jobs. I guess we are perfectionists at heart, and it bugs us when they hire someone with no MT experience when we had to put in so much time either in school or learning on the job. Don't let it get to you. Just keep with it and stay focused, and you'll improve over time.

Someone smart with good English skills can read enough reports to catch on pretty quickly.

read reports from your office - bette

Yes,read all the reports from the office you can. Docs use pretty much the same words and phrases. Ask the other two MTs how to get better quicker. Do your best and enjoy.

If it were me, I would fake it until I make it. Just keep going and learning. We all had to start out sometime with no experience. Hope this helps.

"How long does it take to learn with no training or experience?" Are you kidding? You don't "learn" transcriptioin a few weeks or months for that matter. It's an ongoing education of terminology, drugs, procedures, equipment, technology, etc. It sounds like you bit off more than you can chew. What your question meant to be a joke?

Yeah, it's kind of like saying I'm going to take a weekend course in neurosurgery.

Well, yes, I agree and I know that you are just trying to inject some humor here, but I would put it a different way. I think that anyone who would try to be an MT without training does not have a full grasp about what being an MT entails--its responsibilities and challenges. This is not making the OP wrong. She asked for some advice, she asked nicely, and I think she deserves a polite answer. I am going to take the liberty of posting something I had on here a long time ago, back when more people were studying MT. (If the mod does not feel this belongs here she is, of course, free to remove it.) I am posting it in the hope that it will give this woman something solid to look at, and that she will realize the need for an education to do/succeed at what she is wanting to do. Here is the post:

Several people have asked me if I think MT is still a viable career. Coincidentally, today as I was cleaning out some files, I found notes from a seminar I gave and thought I would summarize a few of the thoughts, hoping they might be of value to someone out there. (Moderator, if you don't feel this is appropriate, please just delete the post.) First, there are three "myths" to consider: 1. The myth that medical transcription is easy money. Many of the not so reliable schools push this idea and use it to exploit people. It makes me really disheartened that many people who do not have much money to begin with get taken in by this. Shame on the schools who do this! 2. The second myth is that it does not matter where you go to school; you can get a good medical transcription education anywhere. Again, another myth. The old saying that "you get what you pay for" really applies. When I am counseling people face to face, I always advise that the two things they MUST have from any program are the SUM program and real, live instructors. 3. The third myth is that you can always learn "the old fashioned way--on the job." That was true up until perhaps the end of the 70s; it is surely not true now. The marketplace and its structure (and pace) have changed too radically. When interviewing schools, ask questions: 1. Where are your graduates working? Can you give me the names of 2-3 grads who would be willing to share their experience with me? 2. How long has the school been in business? Is it a private entity? A sole proprietorship? Who are the principals? How are your instructors chosen? 3. Do your financial homework. Call the BBB and the Department of Business Regulation for the locality in which the school is registered. Have there been complaints? Have the complaints been satisfactorily resolved? 4. What form of financial aid do you offer? 5. How accessible are your instructors and by what means? E-mail only? Are telephone calls permitted/encouraged? 6. Does your school use authentic physician dictation such as in The SUM program? Or does it merely use scripts read by actors? 7. What type of follow-up does your school offer? Can I "retake" any portions of the course with which I have difficulty? How many tries do I have to pass the final? 8. What kind of placement program do you have? What percentage of your grads get placed? (There should not be a fee for placement.) 9. Utilize the wisdom of the "old salts"--ancient MTs like yours truly who have been in this business for decades. Most older MTs are happy to help newbies. Many people helped me when I was starting out, and in gratitude, I try to help people just starting. Those are just some thoughts that I culled from the seminar I did. I hope something in here helps someone. Have a great week!

Well, that is what I said a couple of years ago. Things have changed greatly, the field has tightened up. You might want to call the Andrews School and speak to Linda Andrews. I have never spoken to her personally, but I understand that she is very professional, kind, and helpful. Perhaps she can give you some specifics as to what you might do. The very best to you!

How Much MT Experience Is Too Much To Get You Hired?
Nov 15, 2011

I spent last week typing test dictations for transcription jobs. After typing five tests today for one company and then 3 more for another company I am wondering why I haven't been called back on any of these jobs. I have heard of having too little experience, but is there such a thing has having too much experience that a company is afraid to hire you because they think you will demand to be paid too much. Even though I have 10+ years experience I am willing to take 7 cpl just so that I c ...

Is InScribe LLC, Kentucky Changing; Anyone Recently Apply Or Been Hired Who Has Years Of Experience;
May 11, 2011

Okay, I know InScribe LLC (Kentucky) has been on the Boards multiple times (at least monthly, if not weekly, it seems), but I just noticed they have a “Premium” ad at the top of the Job Seeker’s Board.  I guess these “Featured Listings” are not free, as the other listings are.  If I remember correctly, most of the posts on the Boards have been by Newbies, because InScribe evidently is one of the few MTSOs that hire new graduates.  However, it appear ...

6 Years Experience, But No Formal Training -HELP
Dec 07, 2012

Hi all, I have been doing MT on a contingent basis for the last 6 years for my mom (who used to run her own I/C company). For the past 3 years I've been a CNA and this past August had to choose between knee surgery to continue being a CNA or to find another line of work, I have 2 little girls, so I chose the later.  The problem I'm running into is it seems to be a requirement to have a degree or cert in MT/ME to find ANY thing in this field! Does anyone know of a company that doe ...

Nov 11, 2009

I am a new graduate and need to find a job! I am also new to this site. I got the site info from a friend that has been doing transcription work for many years. She has given me some leads, but as of now, nothing! It appears that most of these companies wnat 2 or more years experience. Does anyone know how I can start and get some experience? Will I Get Hired?
Sep 06, 2010

I have a question for all MedQuist MTs . . . I called them and was told that I qualified and passed MedQuist's test. That was about a week ago. I was told that I am still being "considered" and "reviewed." One recruiter told me that it would just be a matter of time before they could get through all of the paperwork. Another recruiter simply told me my file was still being "reviewed." What does this mean? Does MedQuist always offer jobs to those that pass their testing? Or is it possible t ...

I am told that I just got hired by Nuance.  Am interested in what people have to say about the company.  I have read that the first part of this month, they were running out of work.  If so, do they really need me? Also, am interested in insurance costs?  Some straight answers would be most appreciated. Thanks, Charlie ...

Does Anyone Ever Get Hired....?
May 30, 2012

Does anyone ever get hired from these companies who are continually posting help wanted ads?!?!?  I have applied to at least 15 companies posting ads for help only to sit here waiting for at least 5 weeks, so far, for an answer to any for which I applied!  I have been a medical transcriptionist for over 20 years as well as a QA worker for over 5 years.  My resume is on par with what I consider to be some of the best, yet I never receive an answer to my applications.  I realiz ...

Too Old To Get Hired?
Jul 26, 2013

Should I stop saying I have 31 years of experience as a transcriptionist? I try not to date myself by putting dates on my resume, like when I graduated. I am 61 and will be 62 next June. I have not worked since March, but I made so little money that I get way less than 200 dollars a week from unemployment! I have applied everywhere, outside the house and inside. I have attended resume counseling at the career center, nobody is interested in helping me pay for any schooling, they change the s ...

Anyone Hired?
Apr 24, 2015

All the ads on the job seeker's board have hundreds and even thousands of responses.  Does anyone ever really get hired?  One of the ads wants someone to start "within the next hour," and that was a few days ago and it now has hundreds of responses.  Why is that ad still even posted?  Only rarely does a company take its ad down or post a message when positions are filled.  Do the other companies just not care?  Can it be that all those hundreds and thousands of ...

Newly Hired MT
Aug 31, 2010

Hello, I am new to the forum and recently hired as an at-home MT. It has been a year since I completed college MT courses at a tech center. The employer, saw my resume online. I have a p/t job that I've had for 2 years in addition to the MT job. Both jobs, are flex in hours, although the MT employer would like full-time. It pays 8 cents for every 60 characters. I would really love to drop the p/t job because it miserable in many ways. Can someone break the pay down in other terms? W ...

Hired But Forgotten

I was hired for my first transcription position and filled out the paperwork Aug 4th.  They said after the platform was installed on my computer (done Aug. 19th) the training would begin.  The trainer has not communicated w/me at all.  When I emailed HR and asked if training would begin this week (Aug 21st) the response was "hope so, but I have been on vacation and am not sure".  I emailed HR again yesterday (Aug. 24th) with no response.  They had been ver ...

Has The Q Hired A Flunky?
Jan 09, 2012

I've been getting the impression that the Q is paying someone to contest all the negative posts.  In the last week or so, as soon as something negative is posted it is answered almost immediately.  I do not think an MT could be working and still be immediately available to do this.  I've also never met anyone personally who defends this place. ...

Why Didn't I Get Hired?
Aug 27, 2012

I have been a MT for 30 yrs. I had to stop working 4 yrs ago due to health issues, then finally had 2 surgeries which pretty much took care of the problem. While I was out on disability I got a grant, went back to an AHDI approved University and took refresher courses in MT fulltime for a year. Now, I'm ready to get back to work. I submitted a resume to M-Modal last week and just read they are not considering me. Is there a way to find out why? I'm a good transcriptionist and I want to ...

What Are My Chances Of Getting Hired Anywhere
Aug 31, 2012

I have two years experience but my experience is not recent.  I did not graduate from a school or course, rather, I was trained by an MTE and by someone who had a general practice that they typed for.  Eventually I was able to take over the general practice but had to give it up because my husband's health was critical. I would like very much to get back to MT work but the ads I'm seeing are not conducive to me thinking I'm going to get hired......  What y'all ...
