Anyone having trouble getting hired? - Rosey

Posted: Jan 15, 2013

I am having an extremely hard time being hired. I am not a newbie. I have training from CareerStep and also have three years experience doing just about every type of transcription there is. My supervisors would all say that I am pleasant, prompt, and extremely accurate. I have worked in-house and also home based. I have a long medical employment history, I did billing and coding for years as well.

I test and test and never seem to be able to get hired. I email and fax resume after resume to companies to either be told I do not have the experience they are looking for or never hear back. I took a job driving 100 miles a day so that I could get the experience to be hired from these companies for remote work, they went to Dragon so I lost out on that after 2.5 years.

Can anyone help me. Is there something I am doing wrong. Is it me or is it generalized in the industry. I hear about entry level people being hired all the time so it is very frustrating.

I also have a friend who works for MModal and has been there for years (was at Medquist). She has even looked over my test stuff and said they’re perfect and I still do not pass. I am extremely frustrated and disappointed.

In almost the same boat. - anon

I could have written your post, well almost. I also am not a newbie trying to get a job right now. I have been looking for almost two weeks with nothing to show for it. I think it is the industry, and I have heard it is slow around this time of year. Hang in there and something is bound to change.

It is not slow right now but very busy here - anon

Try places located in Southern California. It is very busy here.

Not only wasn't I having any luck trying to get out of at-home MT and back inhouse again (been looking & applying for over 2 years), but now that I'm ready to ditch MT and get a *real* job somewhere else, I don't seem to be able to do that, either, because no employers outside of the medical field perceive any value to medical transcription skill. I finally gave up on job hunting for a while, and am going to go back to school.

The MTSOs don't seem to want ANY level of experience anymore, if the holder of that experience lives in the United States. I sincerely believe we're being forced out of MT because we're not offshore foreigners.

What are you going back to school for? I am in a similar boat!

I am trying to go from in-house to at home :)
I enjoy working in house, but I HATE working in an office. I work around 20 women and its really hard to get the work done. They are all gossipers, etc, and do not understand I am production based as they are billing, etc. I cannot sit around and chat or have them chatting right behind while I'm trying to type.

Im surprised MM or Nuance has not hired you, especially with - all your experience. It is

unfortunate to see an MT want to work, but cant find a job, yet the ones who have jobs are griping and complaining about them.

They should look elsewhere and let the MTs who wanna work have the jobs. I hope you find something soon. Good luck.

hiring - me too

I have 37+ years and have been applying for a couple years. When you find out how to do it, let me know. I have basic 4, been supervisor in all of my jobs, and QA in several jobs. Go figure. Too old to do something else and to young to retire at 60. I think I will take the job at the local Holiday Gas Station as an inside attendant for $10 an hour with full benefits (which I get nothing now).

I've been applying for years too. - Rosey

[ In Reply To ..]
I have been applying since I started, three years ago. I am working at the local hospital making $12 doing all transcription, hospital, clinic, surgeries, specialist, etc. It is all I can do. When I lost my job due to the other hospital going to Dragon and I had to really take a pay cut.
that isn't bad pay - you could do worse
[ In Reply To ..]
I'd love to be back in the hospital setting again. There are absolutely no hospitals in my area that still do inhouse transcription. A lot of people here are not making $12 an hour either.
Will not be making that anyways, hospital going to Dragon - Rosey

I live extremely rural. There are no jobs, transcription or waitressing, in my tiny area of 2000 people. Closest Wal-Mart is 100 miles away. When you factor in commute and time away from home, its not worth it. Ii do not mind my job, but again, this hospital has chosen to go with Dragon soon and think they do not need editors, that the system is perfect. The hospital I worked at before did the same thing, a tiny hospital with 6 doctors lost 3 of them due to Dragon. So, it isn't really a choice at this point, I must find something else before I have no job.
Oh I misunderstood your post - yeah you do need to find something nm

You will not make $12.00 an hour at either of - those companies. sm

Read the boards. New hires start VR at 4 cpl and when and if there is work (which is hardly ever) they can only make minimum wage if that when they're lucky on a good day. Good luck!
If you are not making this at the very least, obtain your own accounts - me
[ In Reply To ..]
Build a cheap website through Yahoo and obtain your own accounts.... You should at least be making over $12 per hour, even on the worst dictators.
I've thought about that - Rosey
[ In Reply To ..]
I've thought about that, but wondered just how hard it is. My mother has been a hospital billing consultant for years with her own business and have always wanted to do something similar. Is it hard to obtain your own accounts?

I've applied/tested with Medquist about5 times and Nuance about 10 - Rosey

Still cannot get hired. I always get a "we are not hiring" or that I did not pass the test, even when a QA editor friend reviewed and said she found no errors.

I was recently hired by both MModal and Nuance, so they are hiring. - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
In fact, MModal offered a sign-on bonus for working evening hours. I found MModal's transcription test to be insanely easy. Nuance's was a bit harder but still passable.

I know that there are "glitches" with the MTTest site where if you capitalize in the wrong place it marks the answer as wrong on the multiple choice part of the test.

If you are failing the transcription portion, I am at a loss. I've been in this biz for 15ish years and found it to be pretty easy.

I will say the pay at both Nuance and MM stinks, but at least they both put me on accounts with plenty of work (for now).

I agree, test was simple, but not sure what happened - Rosey
[ In Reply To ..]
Nuance never even gives me the chance to test. With MModal, I tested, got an email saying I failed (horribly, which was really surprising). I found it to be easy and had someone else check it out and they found no errors. But, then about a month later I received an email saying I had never finished the testing portion and my application was withdrawn. I never could go back in and test as my account was locked. I had to sign up with a different email.

try Haynes - I think they are hiring

Precyse also seems to be looking for people.

First of all, please remember that your training NEVER ends once you graduate from an MT program. I personally do not hire anybody from Career Step, but I guess it does depend on the person and their work ethics and intelligence, not to mention critical thinking skills.

I know I will be slammed for this, but attend some workshops through AHDI, especially the grammar and punctuation workshop, which is an excellent workshop. Purchase and complete the extra workbooks and brush up on Business English. You have no idea how rare it is to find an MT that can even punctuate. Expand their skills outside of basic MT, such as using the modules available for OP reports, etc. Study the BOS several times, as you will remember different items each time you go through it. QA will love you, and you will never be out of work then. YOu can never learn too much!

Good luck!

I agree, I have tried to keep up on training - Rosey

[ In Reply To ..]
Thank you. I totally agree. I have tried to keep going on with continuing education. I did not actually graduate from CareerStep, but took the entire program, got a job, and my course expired before I took the test. But, I do have the experience under my belt as well now. I do belong to AHDI and occasionally attend workshops that are nearby and usually try to learn something a week about the industry, that I either did not know or what have you.

Good for you! - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
No can never learn enough in this field it seems, and those who further their education and skills will always have work on their desks. You just have to look in the right spots sometimes.

Believe it or not, physicians and QA really appreciate quality work and correct grammar and punctuation.

Ran into a similar situation. Try applying with TTS. They are hiring now. Simple test...they called the next morning with an offer.

What state are you in? - Bilboa

[ In Reply To ..]
I've wondered a little if M*Modal and Nuance, knowing full well how little it's possible to make working for them, deliberately DON'T hire MTs from states with a high minimum wage.

If you're in a high-minimum-wage state, maybe that's your (hidden) "fatal flaw."

(Or do they only have to pay the minimum wage in the state their US branches are headquartered in? I'm just speculating here, it's not that I actually know anything one way or the other.)

California - Rosey

[ In Reply To ..]
I am in California. But I am extremely rural in northern California (not "central" but really north, like 2 hours from Oregon but in the middle of nowhere). It does seem as though when applying they are looking for people in certain geographic areas, like SoCal, other states, etc.

Will I Get Hired?

I have a question for all MedQuist MTs . . . I called them and was told that I qualified and passed MedQuist's test. That was about a week ago. I was told that I am still being "considered" and "reviewed." One recruiter told me that it would just be a matter of time before they could get through all of the paperwork. Another recruiter simply told me my file was still being "reviewed." What does this mean? Does MedQuist always offer jobs to those that pass their testing? Or is it possible t ...

Also, am interested in insurance costs?  Some straight answers would be most appreciated. Thanks, Charlie ...

Anyone Hired?
Apr 24, 2015

All the ads on the job seeker's board have hundreds and even thousands of responses.  Does anyone ever really get hired?  One of the ads wants someone to start "within the next hour," and that was a few days ago and it now has hundreds of responses.  Why is that ad still even posted?  Only rarely does a company take its ad down or post a message when positions are filled.  Do the other companies just not care?  Can it be that all those hundreds and thousands of ...

Newly Hired MT
Aug 31, 2010

Hello, I am new to the forum and recently hired as an at-home MT. It has been a year since I completed college MT courses at a tech center. The employer, saw my resume online. I have a p/t job that I've had for 2 years in addition to the MT job. Both jobs, are flex in hours, although the MT employer would like full-time. It pays 8 cents for every 60 characters. I would really love to drop the p/t job because it miserable in many ways. Can someone break the pay down in other terms? W ...

How Much MT Experience Is Too Much To Get You Hired?
Nov 15, 2011

I spent last week typing test dictations for transcription jobs. After typing five tests today for one company and then 3 more for another company I am wondering why I haven't been called back on any of these jobs. I have heard of having too little experience, but is there such a thing has having too much experience that a company is afraid to hire you because they think you will demand to be paid too much. Even though I have 10+ years experience I am willing to take 7 cpl just so that I c ...

Why Didn't I Get Hired?
Aug 27, 2012

I have been a MT for 30 yrs. I had to stop working 4 yrs ago due to health issues, then finally had 2 surgeries which pretty much took care of the problem.
