Vacation - sick and tired

Posted: Jul 26, 2010

Been off for a week and I am having a heck of a time trying to convince myself to sit back in this chair and do it again.  I keep trying the 'ol "at least it's a job speech," but I sure don't want to do this after being gone for a week.  That is sad because I used to like what I do.  Now it is worse than sitting in the dentist's chair having teeth pulled - at least that is temporary and you get to get up after an hour or two.

But I did miss you guys and am glad to be back online!

You are lucky you HAVE vacation time.... - A lot of us have used it up

I really hope you enjoyed your vacation. I know it's hard to get back into the groove of working, especially for the sucky place we work for. I've had to use all my PTO on NJA and I don't think I'm alone here. I work part-time and it's going to take me 6 months or more to earn that back so I can take a lousy week off. I hate it so much here but I'm close to retirement and what else is out there? More of the same, more of the same wherever you go.

same here, used PTO for NJA and no time - for vacation, to be off now

is with no pay for a week if only taking a week, age of retiring, what to do, go back to school? get new career, feel the same, this place is the worst place I have ever worked in my life!!

No sick time - sick and tired

Really is hard when my government-employed husband gets 4 weeks a year off and "personal days" and sick time. We have a friend working for an oil company who gets 7 weeks a year off and of course his wife is a teacher and off all summer getting paid. My week off was just a tease of what is out there. I live in perpetual fear that I will get sick and need time off or surgery and MQ has nothing resembling sick leave. At "our" age, this is a real possibility and/or probability. I just say a prayer every day for one more day of good health and so far, so good. Trying to be glad to see, hear, and be able to type and do this job, but I am just so very tired.
sick time - same here

yup... had a hysterectomy and 2 days later had to be back at work. NICE.

Try and do an 8 hour shift like that!

Love this place.

My hubby gets 6 weeks off a year and is a mechanic!
Trying not to be bitter - SM

It can make a person feel so cheated and angry. I know hearing stories of "time off" and vacations from friends and family can be so hard. You wonder how long you can hold up, even if you don't become ill or need surgery. Not to mention having to work major holidays. This is no way to live. Everyone deserves down time when work is not the main focus of your life. It is constant living in fear and being angry.
Would be different maybe if we "deserved" this, - anonymous

but I have been a hard worker since I was 17 years old. I have put in the time and am an excellent transcriptionist. My only error was in either choosing transcription as a profession (which has served me well for 25 years before now), or in choosing to switch from my in-house job of 20 years to MedQuist 6 years ago. It was the biggest transcription company in the U.S., had great accounts, benefits, and offered the chance to work at home, which my old in-house hospital kept hinting at, but would never take the leap. Well I lept alright, and here I am now 6 years later. All I did was change companies -- that is my huge "error." Now I will pay until retirement, if I live that long.

And before you all jump on me like sharks, I stay because of my schedule and line rate. I have looked and all the other companies want 2nd and 3rd shift with at least 1 weekend day and pay 2-4 cpl less than I make. I have already jumped from the frying pan into the fire; don't want to jump from the fire into a volcano.
I understand - SM

How sad is this? That's where the bitterness and anger come in. We are not deadbeats. All I know is work. How many weeks can a person get up every day and have nothing different to look forward to? You can't get sick, and God forbid if you do, you must make up the time. And how is that to be done when there is very often not even enough work to do your regular schedule? You build up a few hours of PTO and end up using it for NJA, or for the flu, a migraine, etc. Back to no time off again. These people who run this company are one day, in my opinion, going to face an impossible situation in their own lives. I truly believe sooner or later they will pay the consequences. It takes an unbelievable amount of strengh and self discipline to live like this.
That is why I come to this board - nobody - else but other MQ

transcriptionists have a clue what this job requires and what it takes out of you. Some on here even don't get it, but a lot of you do and the camaraderie is invaluable. Not even my own husband or children "get it" - why sometimes I am so frustrated, tired, angry, bitter, etc. I keep going over my budget daily trying to figure out some way we can live without my salary. The day I get 2+2 to equal 4 is the day I will give my notice and never be back.
Hoping for the best - SM

I am praying that things work out for you, and that you can say a final goodbye to this company and this kind of burden. It truly drains you and takes the joy out of just about everything. It has nothing to do with being grateful for a job; this has everything to do with being treated with dignity. My very best wishes go out to you.
Exactly -- the money is important, but being treated - anon

so poorly and with such little regard or respect for a job that is making them a lot of money and is extremely difficult to do and takes years of experience to do well, is really disheartening.

Had 3 reports, then NJA. Great to be missed. - sick and tired

Had 2 E-mails from supervisor while I was gone. Just mass mailing to everybody. I would have fainted if she had said "have a nice vacation" or "glad to have you back and hope you had a great time," although we have to hear every time she has to take her child to the doctor or has a dentist appointment.

I guess I really didn't want to be FLOODED with back-logged work when I came back, but having NJA sure makes you feel like you are an unnecessary cog on the wheel.

Vacation, P.r.n., Per Diem Coverage?
Dec 14, 2009

I've been in this business for 30 years, but am under employed at the moment and am starting to get bored to tears with having so little work to do.  But, it seems that all of the ads that I see are looking for full time transcriptionists.  Surely there must be some companies or MTSOs somewhere who would need an MT to help with part time or per diem work, to help with vacation coverage or maybe for temporary work just to help clear up an occasional back log and such.  But, d ...

Those Who Work While Traveling Or On Vacation
Aug 08, 2010

I was wondering how it's done.  I have two days a year when I'm not available to work because of a family reunion.  Since most of the fun doesn't start until after 12 but we have to be there very early because of the committees we're on, I hate to waste that time doing nothing when I could be working. My company does not allow satellite. Is this the only way it can be done? If not, what are the required items besides a laptop? Thanks in advance ...
