Hand me a barf bag! - Email from MT of year 2012

Posted: May 23, 2013

She either has very rose-colored glasses or a very chocolate-colored nose.  I can see why she won, as she paints such a wonderful picture of the company and the profession.  Maybe it used to be that way, but not anymore.

MT Week Message from MT of the Year 2012

Happy MT Week everyone! It's hard to believe that a year has passed since I was nominated as an MT of the Year finalist, and I was humbled and honored to accept the MT of the Year award at the AHDI Annual Convention and Expo (ACE) in Indianapolis, Indiana. This has been a year of amazing growth for our industry and for M*Modal. Along with our industry and company, I have grown professionally as well, although my beginnings were not in the transcription industry.

Back in the 1980s, after leaving my local community college, I began my career in healthcare by becoming a phlebotomist, laboratory technician, and pathology technician at our local medical center. In those jobs I learned about many aspects of patient care, from how to draw blood samples to what laboratory/pathology tests were appropriate when testing for different diseases and medical conditions. I also learned customer service skills and medical office procedures, and although I felt a great deal of satisfaction from my job, I felt something was missing - an opportunity to put my college education (I held an AA in general science) and on-the-job learning together with my writing skills.

Opportunity did present itself in the form of a friend who had also worked in the lab previously. Like myself, she felt something was missing from her career and pursued medical transcription via on-the-job training through our hospital. Without much delay she recruited me to do the same, and I transferred to the transcription/medical records department. Since I already had a medical background, my training was short and soon I was on the job, transcribing all specialties and all work types. If I had a question or problem there was an easily available, helpful staff of senior transcriptionists who helped me along. I will forever been grateful to these seasoned veterans!

After a few years though, things in our industry began to change. Concerned with the financial burdens of maintaining an in-house transcription service, our hospital decided to outsource and laid off their staff, myself included. At first I was terrified - where would I find employment? Who would help me if I had questions? Would working from home be a good situation, or would the solitude be too much to bear? After a false start with another company, I sought and landed a full-time position with Transcriptions, Ltd., which was soon after bought by MedQuist. With MedQuist I found what I needed - a large firm with the technical backing, innovation and expertise to bring this industry into the next millennium, coworkers and supervisors who support and lead their transcriptionists to excel in their profession, responsive and effective corporate leadership who actively attend to both their internal and external clients, along with a benefits and compensation package that cannot be topped by any other company. I was confident I had found a new home!

After 12 years with this company, I have seen it grow and change from MedQuist to M*Modal, in response to the growing and changing needs of our clients. Our company has always been willing to try new and innovative solutions to problems as they arise, and in the process I have served under different supervisors and provided my services to multiple medical facility clients in several states. I look upon each as a challenge, and am proud to be able to provide quality services to these clients. During this process of innovation, I have served as a medical transcriptionist, customer team lead, and most recently have become a master medical editor - which I have learned I love to do! Both my TSM and my Quality Coach sought me out to become an MME, and I've found this position allows me to continue to transcribe, but help other MTs learn the ropes of different clients, dictators and work types, much the same way I was helped by my senior transcriptionists back during my training. I look upon it as my way of passing the torch to the next generation of transcriptionists so they can grow, serve and lead in this industry, and share in its rewards as much as I have. I am forever grateful to both Shelly and Lisa for their support and encouragement, and allowing me to serve in this capacity!

During this past year I was astounded to learn I had been nominated as MT of 2012, and I was honored to be the guest of M*Modal at last year's AHDI convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was an experience I will never forget for many reasons! First and foremost was the opportunity to meet and thank so many wonderful people in this company, and get to know them a bit. I didn't know what to expect at first, but I was delighted to find what a fun bunch of people they are, and how focused they are to any and all suggestions brought to their attention by their MTs. They really wanted to know what their MTs want and need to do our jobs well and flourish in the company! Second, I will never forget how it felt to be among my fellow M*Modal transcriptionists and editors and learn what a professional, compassionate group of people they are. I felt honored and humbled to be included among them. Third, I will always remember the empowering sensation I received by attending the convention sessions, listening in on the discussions pertinent to our industry's issues, and contributing my views to the discussion. Fourth, the hotel was luxury itself! I felt completely spoiled at the end of the trip! I feel this convention is an event every MT and MME should attend for professional as well as personal enrichment, to make connections, engage in discussions, and meet other M*Modal employees in an energetic, upbeat environment. An unexpected dividend from this experience was that I came back home invigorated, inspired and renewed in my commitment to doing the best work I can, for our company, clients and first and foremost, the patients who need our exemplary services.

Happy MT week to my fellow MTs, MMEs, and all the folks at M*Modal! You are the best of the best, and I am proud to be part of the team!

I know who won in 2012 - see msg

I remember who won last year, because I used to QA her work way back when there was an actual QA Dept. Her work was always very good, but I don't understand why she's so happy all the time.
is there something wrong with being happy? - SM

My life has been pretty miserable for the past 10 years, but everyone thinks I'm the happiest person they know. It is my nature to be happy even though for me life really sucks.
Nope - Nothing wrong with it...

I just don't know why she's happy being an MT. Am really curious. Would love to hear from her as to why she is still happy in this business. Gosh darn, I was happier than a pig in you-know-what up until about 2005 in this biz.
One detail that Debbie-the-Generic-MT-of-the-Year - seems to have forgotten to mention: sm

is that likely she's married, and the hubs pulls in a six-figure salary.

I'm willing to bet that Debbie is a hobbyist MT.
And, I would be willing to bet that .... - none

you are jealous. Why call her names? That was not called for. So, since we are making up stuff, there are a lot of things I could ASSUME about you too. However, I don't want to be banned so, I won't go there.

"take Good Care Of Our Patients" BARF
Mar 04, 2015

Have a good TSM, so I shouldn't complain too much.  But getting sick and tired of comments about taking care of our patients, thanking us for quality care of patients, etc.  I know she realizes we are all concerned about our paychecks right now as much as anything else.  Not that we don't give a darn about quality, but we are after all working to try to make a living.  Corporate is just shoving this quality crap down our throats every chance they get.  I am sur ...
